,I love the english language and words in general, and agree that spelling and grammar dont appear to be as important these days, which to me is sad.

I did not take this thread to mean any other than a discussion of this, which is an interesting topic.

I fully appreciate that for some people this is a huge problem, and just as some people are hopeless at maths (myself included) ,. It is the content that is important on here.

Unfortunately it is all too easy for things on here to get misconstrued. It happens all the time, and people are all too ready to jump on someone, for simply having worded something not quite as articulately as it should have been.
This is a shame, as not all people have that ability.

The main and most important thing on here to me is that people are communicating with each other, in a civilised manner.

Don't think Paula was getting at anyone on Genes when she posted this,she was just generalising at the state of relaxation of the rules of grammar that exist today.
I am an oldie and we were taught to be correct and had spelling tests etc.
In my opinion,It's not just the spelling it's the actual way of speaking that I find hard to come to terms with....nothing to do with regional accents,which I find interesting,but the lack of thought about the way they portray themselves.
Think TV has a lot to do with it.
I also get the odd words wrong.....it's age....but at least we recognise it.

Just for the record, I did infact correct the grammatical (or typographical) error in my original post. I did not intend to criticise or belittle anyone with my posting as this was merely my own opinion and observations. :-D

whilst it is appreciated that some people have difficulty with their spelling and their grammar, others genuinely have difficulty reading posts with many mistakes.

Just as some have brains which can't work out the pattern of the correct spelling others have a brain which cannot untangle the incorrect word.

As I age I find that sometimes I write similar sounding words to what I really mean. Probably because I am tired at the time of writing but the written word doesn't lie.

Whilst I have never referred to a mural as a muriel I did refer, in a conversation, to the florist foam as 'osier', I knew immediately that osier was used in basketmaking. The following morning, my brain returned to its normal self and the word 'oasis' came to mind immediately. Hey ho....or should that be heigh ho.?..jl

Although I can accept should've and would've as being remotely correct,
I find that would of and should of are abysmal errors,

as is, There for their and here for hear,

and what really gets me is the opening post with glaring spelling errors which are never corrected,
