I must of missed that then Ann, but did you notice the clip I mentioned in the Panorama programme? Maybe I was mistaken that it was Freddie Starr. I expect there will be lots pf names banded about, and some will be innocent people, who just happened to be working with JS.

The interview I heard this morning on 5Live, with Nicky Campbell interviewing Paul Gambaccini this morning, left me thinking that there is so much more that went on.

I have just seen that parts of the interview will be in the press tomorrow , so feel it will be o.k for me to post, bits of the interview.




Former BBC colleague Paul Gambaccini has said he knew of the allegations in the 1980s

Speaking to presenter Nicky Campbell on Radio 5 Live, Savile's former BBC colleague Paul Gambaccini said he knew of the allegations in the 1980s.

Quote....Mr Gambaccini questioned why newspapers had not acted when he said a reporter had boasted that his colleagues were aware of a story linking Savile to "necrophilia".

Campbell pointed out: "That particularly lurid accusation that you have just brought to people's attention is one that has not been in the public domain."

Gambaccini agreed and asked "why not?". And he asked: "Who vetted the knighthood? Coco the clown?"

He said the entire society was taken in by Savile - "including the Prime Minister who invited him to Chequers; including the royal family, photographed with him, he got a knighthood in this country, he got a papal knighthood.

"This is not just the BBC this is history, this is a man who conned an entire society," Gambaccini added.

Mr Gambaccini claimed it was known among BBC staff that the late presenter targeted vulnerable, "institutionalised" young people.

Gambaccini had worked with Savile at Radio 1 where he had first heard stories about his abuse of under-age girls.

He said that he used a "politically incorrect" term to categorise the people to whom Savile devoted his attentions.

"The expression I came to associate with Savile's sexual partners was either one used by production assistants or one I made up to summarise their reports ... 'under-age subnormals'," said Gambaccini.

"He targeted the institutionalised, the hospitalised - and this was known. Why did Jimmy go to hospitals? That's where the patients were."

But he said these things were taking place at a time when staff failed to get to grips with the concept of paedophilia.

"It was considered so far beyond the pale that people didn't believe it happened," he said. ..unquote

Got to be honest, I don't read your comments John, but seeing as Sue brought them to my attention what you wrote, I can't believe that anyone has "friends" who act the way your friends did, how could anyone who acted the way they did, be friends? Words fail me

He was trying to sit amongst the very young audience..

I believe Starr did not turn up for a planned show a few weeks ago when his name was being bandied around.

I would have a walk to the fisherman's village about 3 miles away with my "friends" - both in late 60's and openly gay. Young boys would cycle over to talk to them and I walked a distance away and waited. They would sometimes begin to compare the merits of young boys in the evening, but I would leave and go back and read a book on the verandah. That side of their lives made me feel very sick, to be honest.

My gay friends (aged between mid 20s and 60s) would be bloody insulted if they were viewed in that way.

If that side of their lives made you sick perhaps you should have ditched them as friends!

I refute that - my friend along with a companion went to his show at the Double Diamond Club in Caerphilly many moons ago - they went for an autograph - both were invited into his room - her friend was rather well endowed up top and FS commented - "you don't get many of those to the pound" - so his denial is a lie

A question to those who watched Panorama last night....

During the film clips of JS's shows, did I see a clip of Freddie Starr? He wasn't named, and he didn't speak, he just stepped from the audience, but as he walked down the steps, the film was frozen a couple of times, even if it wasn't him, I wonder why this person was shown, with no audio, unless of course I missed something?

By the way, if a British person is involved in child abuse, in another Country, that person can be prosecuted, if the police are informed in the U.K. I know this for certain, because I once dealt with a case like that here in the U.K

There is a possible connection between this Savile case and India. That's why I shared it with you. It may be of interest to someone. Sorry if it inflames/bores others.

Sylvia backwards then asked if I had reported the possible soliciting of youngish boys. Not sure why she asked, but I answered her. Then those on the moral high ground waded in.

Merlin makes my point for me. It is a very different world. When you are on holiday you don't tend to report things that you might report at home. Taboos, customs and laws are different around the world.

I suppose we could all relate stories about the places we have been to and things we have done there,but this is not about us, its about the people who have been abused and badly let down by the powers that be at the time. I,m only surprised he has,nt mentioned the "Girlie Boys" which are prevelent in India and surrounding Countries. :-S

No the thread is not about you and I ndia John .. so why bring it up again ? OH you went to church while there , oh well if that makes you feel better about turning a blind eye ...

DET It would have been Indian police. And it seemed to be accepted practice and quite blatant anyway.

Fortunately, I was able to spend a lot of time with "good" people. I went to church whilst I was there and befriended a local Baptist Pastor who was providing training opportunities (sewing classes) for about 20 wives of fishermen. I would say prayers with them every morning (me in English and him translating in local Malalayam) and try and help. It only costs £7 a week to run the school!!!

Yesterday's DM on line had an article by one of their female journalists. She recounted that she was aware that a father-figure friend was an abuser. The survivor (now an adult0 wouldn't report it. Without 'proof' or co-operation how could she do so?

That's half the problem with rumours and 3rd party knowledge.

The comments directed to her on her page were much the same as on here.

John - for your own peace of mind, have you considered now going to the police? They may say that there is not much that they can do, but at least you would have tried.

When the locals in Kerala realised I was heterosexual and on my own, several times they pointed to attractive women and said "would you like an Indian wife, Mr John?"

These women were wives of fishermen, I discovered. And again a way of supplementing the average £5 a day family subsistence income. I made my excuses.

I was thinking there was a link between these men "having fun" in India and presumably places like Thailand and using similar expressions and behaviour in the UK. Obviously a web of deceit.

Rose Never thought of myself as naive. Always look for best in people, and often am shocked by man's inhumanity to man (man = mankind). So must be naive. But haven't most of us been hoodwinked by Glitter and Savile over the years?

I'll assume it was naivety at the time rather than lack of concern John that prevented you from saying something and that the mention of gay men is incidental to the rest of the post , as we all know that being gay does not make one more likely to be a paedophile ( Heavy emphasis on that!)

There are men who go to these places because they know that poverty drives young boys and girls to prostitution... and that the chances of being caught and punished are minimal because of that.

I'd prefer to hope there are rather more like a family friend who was in India for work with a number of his workmates, who, touched by the extreme poverty, ( yet generous and cheerful spirit of the people) spent their spare time and own money helping a family, who had nothing. And continued to do so after their return to UK.
