Rambling Report 4 Aug 2012 15:30

No it's not white, but it is too bright Sylvia, with an 'unfortunate' contrast of colours, you may be lucky enough not to have any problem with it, but that does not mean that no one else is...as you say there are lots of threads on this...those members can't all be drama queens or plain wrong can they?

GR are working on it , that is obvious, it is also obvious that until they have come up with the finished article, it will be difficult for those who have problems, and those who don't , to reach any middle ground.

Mainly it is the size of the text that is the problem because it leaves too much bright background, and the fineness of the turquoise text that 'merges' too much.

I won't comment on the spelling issue, but I am sure that those who are dyslexic would not say it affected them adversely if that were not the case.

White is white ...lol..this is no different from any other WHITE , ..this is just making a mountain out of a mole hill should of guessed it would go down the make people ill route , it is a wonder it has not been blamed for making people spell badly .. or has it ?? lol probably cannot be bothered reading the umpteen threads on the subject to find out .

Can't you read what other people are saying, That this site is exceptionlly white (Glow White)
If you don't have a medical condition (& I hope you don't) that this is Not Kind too, you could not fully understand.
Any how that said I have to get off here now as I have lots of other things that need to be done. I might be back later if I have time.

Well I have been looking at other threads with my sunglasses on & as far as I can see GR have members using this site with sunglasses on to stop things like headaches, epileptic attacks, eyestrain etc. What I would like to know is....

1. Do GR feel it is normal to make PAYING MEMBERS of GR use the site only if they have sunglasses on?

2. What are GR going to do about it?

3. Because of a new family tree layout some people have had family tree all mixed up, What are GR going to about that too?

Hello Dizzi,

My daughter is epileptic and has been since the age of 9....she is 39 now.....We had our first computer many years ago and we had to buy a special screen cover to stop the glare it was like a fine mesh which we placed across the screen. My daughter could always tell when things were about to happen as she would have what she called a funny smell....this was her warning sign, and this happened a lot when she spent time on the computer.....strangely fresh paint was another trigger. It was awful for her through her teenage years but she has lived her life to the full passing her driving test after being fit free for a number of years, having two lovely children and becoming a secondary teacher...a job she loves. I don't think there is such a stigma attached to people who suffer with epilepsy now as there was years ago....thank heavens! I for one dislike the background on here it is far too bright for me.

Well it seems to some people think that people that have epilepsy should not be on a computer, thats just silly as it's disriminating against disabled people. I'm a paying member just like all the other members on here, and like all members I am allowed my point of view too.

Yes I have epilepsy and the new change of colour on here does not help my condition. I have informed GR of this in more detail, only to have a reply from them saying my message will be passed to the right people but I won't get a reply from them. I replied because GR requested it in a thread they added.

If you have problem with any changes made you should let GR know about it at least.

I have pointed out to Gru support that the site, as it now is, does not comply with their liabilities to people with impaired vision. In particular it does not allow the substitution of the default color scheme by another one. For instance Opera has two built in styles for people with impaired vision and neither works with Gru.

In general Gru does not seem prepared to accept its legal liabilities or industry standards of practice. Particular examples are support for the visually impaired, other disabilities, auto payment renewal, up front opportunity to opt out of tracking cookies.

These may interest you, there are lots more.

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995

In the UK, under the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA), any organisation that offers goods or services via their Web site is under a legal obligation to make their sites accessible. Section 19 of the DDA states that it is unlawful for a service provider discriminate against a disabled person by:

Refusing to provide, or deliberately not providing, to the disabled person, any service which he provides, or is prepared to provide to members of the public; or
Providing services of a lower standard or in a worse manner; or
Providing services on worse terms.

Since 1999, providers offering services to the public have been legally required to take such steps as are reasonable them to take, (considering all the circumstances of a case), to enable a disabled person to use the service. Many people are unaware that this obligation can apply Web sites in the same way as it applies to the quality of service provided in a physical environment such as a building. A disabled person can take legal action against a service provider that fails to comply with a duty to make these "reasonable adjustments", unless the service provider can show that such a failure is justified. In relation to Web sites, a provider may be required to:

Make changes to a practice( what the service provider does) policy (what the service provider intends to do) or procedure (how the service provider goes about its activities)which makes it impossible or unreasonably difficult for a disabled person to use its service, and

Provide an auxiliary aid or service if it would enable (or make it easier for) disabled people to make use of the service provided by the service provider.

Dizzi's OP never asked for a reply from people with epilepsy

She simply asked a question

If the brightness could affect people with certain types of
epilepsy

I don't have epilepsy , but sudden sun glare and flashing light bring on a migraine for me. I did have a head ache this morning..an unusual thing for me. ??!!!
Using the PC on and off during the day may have caused it.

I hope the change doesn't affect peeps who suffer from epilepsy,

Wish peeps Board names were more definite in colour tho.

Dizzi, I answered your question on facebook :-)

Dizzi, I think it could affect people with certain types of epilepsy. Try sending an email to [email protected] and put For the attention of Katie in the subject.

I have reduced my screen brilliance to 44% and it is a bit less of a glare but it also reduces the definition of the text so you can't win. Have to go off now to give my eyes a rest (and I am not epileptic Dizzi, sorry to go off topic).

I'd be interested to find out what daughter with MS thinks, she became colour blind in one eye some years ago. Her rose coloured screen filter wouldn't be much use!

If I am on here for more than 10 minutes it gives my eye muscles a work out trying to focus :-(
