A few points you have rised there Roger, but why are you being so sharp and bad tempered about it?

No one mentioned nightworkers and I fail to see what this has to do with anything with the matter I work all day and I struggled to keep my eyes open towards the end but wouldnt of missed it for the world.

No one has ever said on this thread no one has the right to exercise their point of view , however I am sure most people that post on this site "our ancestors fought for Freedom of Speech" they also taught us good manners maketh the man, so please bare that in mind Roger Sunny boy ;-)

It was pure theatre best watched in darkness - just as it is as we go to watch any play or show. The spotlight was on the performers and the visual effects as it should be . Who wants to see the ' puppets strings' and spoil the magic ? Not me. It was a splendid production which I thoroughly enjoyed. :-)

Rambling Report 29 Jul 2012 14:38

I think that the late start was entirely down to the fact that you just wouldn't have seen half of the splendidness ( is that even a word lol) of the Industrial revolution part of the ceremony ( and which had to come early on or it would have just been ag labs waiting around a long time ;) ). If it had started earlier the effect of the lighting would have been lost..Gold rings against a dark sky, brilliant :-)

Re politeness, I think that "you lot" inevitably sounds rather impolite, unless perhaps said in person in a jocular tone...but even then it can sound 'accusatory', :-D

Don't worry too much Roger. Although you missed the discussion about the Royals looking tired and their age, a different point of view viz the timing is welcomed.

The discussion has been well balanced. Some people thought the whole event was wonderful, others were selective in their praise or condemnation.

Edit - and we might get some 'proper' world and local news once the business week starts on Monday. It's often a bit sparse at the weekends anyway.

Roger

Roger Report 29 Jul 2012 14:23

Well it seemed to me that people were complaining about the late start andthe price of it.

Also the night workers have alot to do with the games opening ceremony in getting those people home after it.

So I had my tuppence worth and get shot down, but I am in full agreement with the TV coverage now why should we only get loads of repeat programmes and news about the games, as there is other things going on it the workld as news does not stop for no one.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 29 Jul 2012 14:16

We did wonder if the late(ish) start was something to do with time zones in other parts of the world. After all, like it or not, its a major International event. During last week 30 minutes or so had already been cut from the end of the 'show' section because of the length.

It must be hard to schedule things so that the N.Americans can catch some or most of it when they get home from work, or so the Australians/New Zealanders needn't get up quite so early in the morning.

And Roger? Nope, I'm not watching the sports, nor did we go and see the Torch relay. Although we can find some non-sport viewings in the evenings, we are still trying to find a news channel were there is some world news. :-D

Guinevere Report 29 Jul 2012 14:13

My ancestors also taught me good manners, Roger, shame yours didn't do the same.

If you'd bothered to read the thread properly my comment was about how late it was for The Queen and Prince Phil, given their ages and Phil's recent illness.

Like Ann I have no idea what night workers have to do with this - but they could take your advice and not do the job if they don't like it.

AnninGlos Report 29 Jul 2012 13:44

Very bluntly I might add too. I don't think anyone was complaining really more just commenting.

And goodness knows what people working nights has to do with anything. I suggest Roger that you read the whole thread to see that people enjoyed it. If we had not we would have switched off.

Roger

Roger Report 29 Jul 2012 13:42

Well I only saw the end bit which was brilliant.

BUT you lot saying how late it was, THINK of all the people who normally work into the night. i'e' the people who gets your morning papers out, the police, nurses doctors do I need to go one.

Also I saw the torch come though my village as in relaity it is a once in a life time event.

So stop cpmplaining as we who loved it did not make you watch it did we.

You could have always gone to bed at your normal time, or did you not want to miss anything, if so don't complain.

Remember our ancestors fought for Freedom of Speech, which I am exercising in this post.

Perhaps Eldrick has secretly invited the Czech Olympic Team to a Wellie Winging competition hence their giveaway fashion that they thought we might not notice being in Wet England with other eccentrics. They can't fool us.

Wishing E all the best for the finals of the yard of ale competition. -j

.....or should that be point something of a metre, or litre, ou en francais......

Silly Sausage

Silly Sausage Report 29 Jul 2012 11:37

I am devilish interested to know what sports or activities Eldrick is going to be taking part in next week at their village sports day....

Swimming relay in the village pond?
Darts knock out ?
Naked mud wrestling?
Big toe wrestling ?

whatever it is I do hope you're supported well in it ;-)

I for one thought it was great to go onto 12.30. I was able to watch BB (I know, I know) and watch the best bit of the Opening Ceremony in my opinion.
I was then able to post on here and still look for those Bradford's. What's so special about getting up early anyway.

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 29 Jul 2012 09:20

I agree, the late finish was totally stupid. I watched it till the end and i had to be up with the sparrows for 10 am the next morning. Only 9 hours sleep and it spoilt my own personal training regime for the local mini olympics next saturday, when i am through to the final of the yard of ale. My finely tuned athletes body just wont take going to bed an hour later than normal. Criminal, absolutely criminal stupidity it was.

Joeva

Joeva Report 29 Jul 2012 08:45

Underground trains and buses were running to 2.30am - an extra one hour than normal. Haven't seen any complaints from people who attended the Ceremony about getting home - which I guess would have been widely reported had there had been any problems.

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 29 Jul 2012 06:53

Watched the replay (began at midnight!)

I thought it was great, but it started out a bit slow.

The lighting the the Olympic Flame was absolutely brilliant! :-D

Who didn't think out the transport issue? A bit daft to have that many people looking for a way home & no public transport :-P

Quote from one North American paper ............................

"Turns out his [Danny Boyle] show was kind of like British music hall on acid [especially the middle part]"

That commentator did like the first part!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Jul 2012 01:20

I felt really sorry for the poor athletes ......... the ones who walked in the Athletes parade AND who stayed "in the building".

It was probably well after 1 am before they got to bed .................. probably messed up a lot of their training schedule.

Yet to be part of the Opening Ceremony is a highlight for them.

Hope not too many miss out on personal best times (if not a medal) because of the stupidity of have the Ceremony held so late.
