I'd say the reason that Brady & Hindley are such high profile names is because that Hindley was a woman, and that was/is more unusual, for a woman to be involved, although probably not as unusual as we think, there was also the tapes, which were heard and written about, so what they did was documented in there own words, that is unusual, therefore more shocking. As for other children that have been murdered, I'd say most of us, when reminded of there names, would know about there case.

It isn't terrible of us not to recall all names, they are not people we actually know, it doesn't affect or day to day lives, that isn't saying we don't think of these people, and feel sorry, it's just that we cannot take on everyone's grief, that wouldn't be right, that would be obsessive if we did.

I have worked with murderers, rapist and paedophiles, and heard, first hand what they did, and as shocking as there crimes were, I have forgotten some of the names, and the cases, unless I was reminded of them.
We can't carry the world on our shoulders. There are some bloody evil people, but we can't dwell on them, it gives them too much notoriety, there are mostly decent people in this world, I'd rather give them some air time.

I think the biggest factor is the way in which things are reported and accessibility to media. Not so many years ago it was shocking to read about such things but we have now become desensitised and find it difficult to make the distinction between what is a video game and what is fact.

Much like the way I can remember the last woman hanged was Ruth Ellis.

I was 14yrs old at that time and unfortunately it was mostly all we heard talked about & read in newspapers at the time.

I think it's also the case that, for self preservation almost,some things have to be 'put away' , literally, to the back of your mind, otherwise you would be paralysed by despair at the cruelty in the world, and full of fear every time your children were more than a few feet away.

If I am being sexist because I mention Mothers/grandmothers it is because at time I was discussing with Muffy Rose and Mau, but you dont only have to be a parent to find these crimes sickening. However I do agree with the fact people find it annoying that Hindley in case it was so shocking because she was a women, so was Rose West she raped and murdered her own children, and as Sharon pointed out Beverly Alllit was a nurse and Shipman was in the most postion of trust.

Rose you are correct, 60/70 yrs down the line Hitlers name is still mentioned, I think the reason why I cant remember these names are because I choose not too, however with Brandy and Hindley they are there as I said fixed in my brain from childhood,it happened before I was born, and I choose now to stay away from the media as much as possible.

There does seem to be certain cases that just stand out more.....which feels wrong because the devastation and evil is just the same.

Hindley and Brady........Ian Huntley and Maxine Carr....John Venables and Robert Thompson...they are the ones that for me immediately spring to mind.

Wrong though because the other children in not so high profile cases count just as much..........as do their families who are still suffering.

Mind it's the same with *missing* children.......everyone knows Madeleine McCann...and to a lesser extent Ben Needham..but who ever gives a thought to the dozens of other children who just disappear every year......I can't name one...to my shame........but they're out there too !!!!!!!!!!

There are many more heinous people who have committed attrocious acts and yet we seem to forget them.
The reason we are transfixed with the Hindley/Bradey scenario is because we are all still enwrapped in the salaciousness of the whole "story".

I don't think it's that anyone forgets the crimes, Hayley, I remember that poor young boy...and what was done to him, too vividly...it is just names i forget.

I think 'Brady and Hindley' just as names have become the archetype (sp) for evil, just as one uses 'Hitler' as a definition that everyone recognises?

I am not asking anyone to apologise for their comments or even to surpress their feelings as Mothers/grandmothers just decent human beings what ALL these people did was just unthinkable, the point I am trying to make is, that at the mere mention of Hindley or Brandys name people's blood pressure goes through the roof, why is it just theirs when we cant even remember equally vile monsters names that was all over the media just a few years ago?

I was a young mother at the time in 1965 and can remember reading of the moors murders, the whole country indeed the whole world was repulsed at what Hindley and Brady had commited.

Brady is an evil,sadistic psychopath, I used to shout hangem but not now. I don't think he should have hanged,because a quick death would have been too good for him........a long lingering painful one will be better.

He didn't care about anyone's life why should we care about him.....and I seriously don't apologise for my comments.......

I think that excuse for a female was Vanessa Gorge Sue, as for the bloke I cant remember his full name it wasnt Dennis Nielson , but was called either the weazel or cat weazel and I remember on it could be question time or a programe very simlair years ago it was suggested thair Hindley and Brandy were policical prisioners * outrage* fights broke out poeple stormed out, as it was pointed out that no government would dare release them or even grant them appeal ( that not I feel they should be every be considered) however the weazel was mentioned as in the mid eighties, he was tired and sentence as part of a pedo ring for what was refered as the snuff murder of a rent boy aged 14 yrs ( now I remember his name) he was sentenaced to life in prison, during this term other murders of about 3 young boys aged about 8 were investigated and he was found gulity and sentenced again he actually served 15 yrs and was released!
Now during the 70's or 80's he lived wtih a women that had young children after his release , these now grown children went to the police and he was again charged with abusing them and only then was he sentenance to life and this would mean life.

I think Brady and Hindley were seared into everyone's conciousness for several reasons... the horrendous nature of the crime, which most thought no woman could ever be involved in, and that it was during the period when everyone began to have tvs, so the news went nationwide 'instantly'.
