Haribo, sometimes all they need to do is talk and for somebody to listen so do as I do, (remember I don't always catch what people say with my hearing aids) I look interested and nod wisely, if they look like they want an answer I have to ask them to repeat what they said, but if they have gone into detail they normally don't want an answer, just an ear. :-) |

I'll remember not to talk to you if I see you at the bus stop Haribo. I'm sure as I've got older and less outgoing my conversation has matched my lifestyle but its still nice to have a chat to a stranger. |

As a chatterbox myself I have no problem whiling away the time at a bus stop etc with anyone, as an avid dog walker, i'm talking daily to strangers, even my job involves a lot of talking, listening, its just that intricate detail that some folk go into which makes you forget what the actual jist of the original story was. |

As a non driver I cant tell you the hours of conversations I've had over the years while standing at bus stops, train/tube platforms etc and it has been conversation mainly started by others approaching me. I have often wondered why some people have never been advised/told by their nearest and dearest to refrain from going into all the boring irrelevant detail surrounding a story when talking to people, especially strangers. Why are they SO unaware how irritating this is for the person who is put in a position to feel obliged to look interested when in reality it is draining for the listener. |

Hayley oops, sounds as if you 'know' her better than you think. Maybe she used to work at your place of work. I have a terrible problem with that. When I worked I was a Training liaison officer for a large department. Everyone in the department knew me because I sent out the monthly newsletter and chased them all up for training. We are talking several hundred. I knew them when I was working and had to speak to them about training but since I retired 12 years ago, their faces have sort of merged into the back ground. I am invariable meeting people in town or at the bus stop who shout out 'hello Ann' to which I reply brightly, 'Oh, hello, how are you?' And haven't a clue who they are. Sooo embarrassing. :-) :-) |

No it wasn't offensive. It is shameful the way some people are picked on just for being themselves. |

Just come home from Cheltenham surprised to find this still going strong. No problem Island, don't mind side tracks as long as there is no nastiness. I had not noticed that Lorraines post had been RR'd, can't think why it should be. Just some busy body I assume. |

I speak to strangers every day as part of my work-I'm a shop assistant. Many start off as strangers and end up as quite well-known acquaintances. |
