I've got 3 kindles, an iPad and an iPod in case the iPad breaks down. I can actually read 5 books at once if I wear two pairs of stereo glasses and squint a bit. And if I plug the iPhone in I can listen to an audio book at the same time.

Brilliant, go for it. You won't regret it. MInd, the electricity bill has rocketed with having to charge them up all the time.

I wasn't too sure I even wanted one, but got given it for my birthday.....now I just wouldn't be without it, and have never read so many books!

And the lighted cover I got for xmas was the icing on the cake...it's just brilliant, no need to have the bedside light on, so no OH moaning about being kept awake!

Apart from Amazon there are lots of other sites offering free e-books too,

Calibre is a very good one, (just Google it), I've got thousands from there......I kid you not, I really have got thousands!! :-D

Wisechild you would need to buy the 3G version which downloads books without the pc. But you also need to check with Amazon if the 3G works in Spain. There is something at the back of my mind about problems with Spain. However I have just used mine in Tenerife.

I can usually download e mails with attachments in3 or 4 minutes, so shouldn´t be as bad as I feared.

You would have to download the books from the Amazon website to your pc, then via a wire which is supplied to the kindle. if you had a wireless network, it would be delivered straight to the Kindle. It appears almost instantaneously on the kindle via the wifi, so the file size must be small. It is not like trying to download a film.
If you can download an email with say a photo attached on your dial up, I don't think you would have any problem with the books

I have no idea how the kindle works, so please bear with me.
I would love to have one because getting hold of English books in Spain is difflcult, but I don´t have broadband, just a dial up connection.
Would I download through the PC, because obviously it would take hours.
Also, do they come with any books pre loaded.
Sorry if I´m being a bit dim, but I don´t want to buy one & find I can´t use it.

I love my kindle Catherine, Sue and Berona both have one as well,so they have the gen for Oz.

There are two versions, the cheaper one which is just wifi or the more expensive 3g one. that is the one which can give you internet access while you are away and don't have a wifi connection. It is very fiddly though. I use it to add to the Aussie thread and cause great hilarity because of the typos. Having said that , there is a new version just out which has a touch screen instead of having to use buttons to navigate.

In America the colour version has just been released, but it is not available in England yet. It will be even more expensive of course and given that books are black and white, I don't think it will be worth the extra unless you want to download lots of magazines.

I have a tablet as well (like an ipad, but an android one) I can download books onto that but it is backlit and so is a strain on the eyes. The kindle is brilliant because it is not backlit and you can read it in sunlight which you can't do with a computer type screen.

As PP says re VAT, some more expensive, apparently this is
being looked into as the VAT is on the paper and Amazon don't use
paper, trying to think where I read that.

I would highly recommend a kindle, i would be lost without mine, it goes everywhere with me, and I mean everywhere lol......

I try and restrict myself from buying on Amazon but i cant help myself lol......

Amazon, love freebies and also not spending a fortune on
other books of interest.

It takes a few books to get used to it..........well it did for me anyhow.

I've just got myself another freebie off Amazon....don't NEED it..but best to grab it when you see it for nothing as prices do go up and down from time to time.on there...I look in daily x

I love my Kindle.....so much so now that I prefer it to proper books !!!!!

I rarely spend over 99p for my books these days...got some good ones using the Amazon daily deal. Can go weeks where there's nothing of interest then suddenly a flurry of books I like.

Have about 50 plus to read on it but better on there than clogging up my book cases.

I think it's fantastic... :-D

I have one and they are marvellous :-D because I have arthritis I can hold and turn pages with just one hand.

Lots of books are free and some of them are jolly good, I choose by feedback for freebies and always leave a review too.

Classics are free and new books are heavily discounted. I have read books on many more subjects than I would normally when priced at £5.99 upwards.

Just got off the phone to the local shop.

They have them in stock, ranging in price from $95 - $149

Very helpful person on phone, said to look up website for Kobo - 1.5 million books available free, and downloads from about $7.

I don't do shops much either - I go shopping when I have to, it's usually not much fun.

We do get Amazon, I've bought some books from them that weren't available in Oz. Not sure about buying an electrical gizmo.

There's a decent electrical shop about 15 mins away, might try there, otherwise I'll have to go quite a distance :-( Local shops might be a bit more expensive, but I'll save time & petrol! Plus, if there's any problem I can take it back ;-)
