Yes looked at the BBC link, the signature doesn't look right to me but maybe he didn't always sign the same. I would think it is a good copy. Did he teach? Maybe it was by one of his pupils if he did.

Jude, I'm no expert but I wouldn't say it had the quality of the other paintings? looking particularly at the hand and feet?

Elisabeth

Elisabeth Report 23 Apr 2012 16:07

He/She must be doing some very shrewd buying - with the other items being offered by the same seller. There is also a Munch and a Francis Bacon!

Carol 430181 Report 23 Apr 2012 16:05

Ah Jude remember now. Have you got many of his paintings, if not I would probably bid on it anyway.

It does say

"The painting is signed Meninsky bottom-left. Please note that this painting was bought without any provenance or documentation. Due to this lack of provenance, the painting must be sold as being in the manner of Bernard Meninsky."

Which is probably why there is a low starting price.

Elisabeth

Elisabeth Report 23 Apr 2012 16:01

I'm dubious to say the least. Amazing how previous items sold by the seller have the same description - bought without authenticity.

Doesn't look to have the fine brush strokes of a true Meninsky - but then I'm certainly no expert. (I have seen originals in the Imperial War Museum.)

Hi Jude, I remember you putting up information about him a while back, but can't remember the relationship. As Glitter Babe says it is a low start bid, I have watched items that only had a short time left and suddenly the world and his wife start bidding.

I bought a print last year by Sidney Curnow Vosper a distant relative, payed £50 the very next week another one came up and went for 99p. lol

Good luck if you bid worth a try even if not an original.

l was thinking how low it is myself and have been trying to compare the signature. l'm watching it closely thats for sure.
l have a photo on canvas of the link below...the original is about 5' x 3' or bigger. "Victoria Station, District Railway"
