Yes looked at the BBC link, the signature doesn't look right to me but maybe he didn't always sign the same. I would think it is a good copy. Did he teach? Maybe it was by one of his pupils if he did.

Like anywhere on line though Jude, he can say anything. But if it doesn't go for much buy it and keep it as in the style of.

To be honest Jude if it goes for a reasonable price and you would have it on your wall - buy it. You can research it later although the seller is covering his backside every whichway :-D

Wikipedia information is worth a read:

Meninsky suffered from mental illness for much of his life and committed suicide in 1950.[1]

I cannot imagine this is a genuine Meninsky, needs to be thought through carefully before purchasing.
Could this be a scam?

I'm 99.9% sure the Paul Henry sold is a fake...there's just not the quality of painting in the clouds or scene..imo someone is churning these out much as the late Tom Keating did in the 70s though he was an expert, and this one isn't that, probably an art student making a bit of cash.

But if you like the picture it's worth having, which is the same for any art really isn't it.

:-D

Sue...see your point, not sure that l would have it on the wall, but sort of interested, very enquisitive now!!

PeeEmm....oh l know about the mental issues, but not sure what that has to to do with this painting though? :-)

I couldn't work that out either Jude. Can't see how it identifies the picture.

Well Jude my thoughts were that you having mentioned that he was your grandfather earlier on the thread, either Pee em has not read the whole thread or is a little insensitive.

Mmm no l was'nt offended, just curious with the thinking and connection to the painting.

PeeEmm....hope you call back onto the thread:)

PeeEmm

PeeEmm Report 23 Apr 2012 17:34

Certainly not insensitive...........
We are after all looking at our family history and must be aware of 'facts'.
I had not see the earlier posts and was not aware of the family connection to Jude - sorry if I was out of order - but I was not aware.
The painting has no provenance, and is probably just a copy, it may not even be a Meninsky, I can't find mention of the 'original' on-line.

The first thing I thought when looking at the three paintings the seller has on ebay is that they are all in a similar style. Nothing difficult or particularly creative to reproduce. Had he had just one painting with more detail and form or prospective to it I may have given him the benefit of the doubt. I think that any of these three prints could be copies done by an average art student

Jude

Thank you for your comment.
I would like you to understand where I was coming from.
As I was not aware of a family connection, my only excuse for posting such an 'insensitive' remark was that I had looked-up Meninsky on Wiki (a sort of Bible to me) to find out more about the Artist.
As an Artist myself there is always an interest in both their work and their lives. Having read the entry on Wiki and found it interesting I simply latched on the sad ending for an Artist with such a large body of work - like Vincent had.
Van Gough produced over 700 paintings in his short life, but has been remembered for only a few that we all know and love.
Some of the work by Meninsky from the war years will be cherished by so many people, this is a tribute to his work. I personally will now look into his life as an Artist and study more of his work. I'm pleased to have found a connection to him.

PeeEmm....thank you so much for taking the time to look up Meninsky and for adding this message.
Where ever l go if there is a connection to art l tend to ask people if they know Meninsky....some do and some don't.
One lady that happened to be in a charity shop last year was buying a gorgeous sketch, she seemed to know about art so l asked the dreaded question....oh my gawd she knew Bernards 2nd wife. We have each others phone numbers but no meeting has been arranged yet:(....l did ring her though!

l did'nt know him myself, my eldest sister remembers meeting him, not sure about the other 2 sisters. We knew very little about him until my father died....and then all sorts of info came to light!!!!

My father was David, not interested in art apart from his fathers work....his brother was Phillip an artist also, you may like his work too. He and Bernard were war artists and correspondence:)))) l knew Phillip he was amazing:)

jude xx

PS...would love to see some of your work??
