'Sok Wend I didn't see it. Death from throat cancer is certainly no joke.

Ann, I have deleted my last post, because I know you are so right and smoking is no joke :-(

As a non smoker, wife of an ex smoker who gave up in 1994 by just stopping after smoking 20+ a day for 40 years. I can't honestly see how covering up cigarettes for sale is going to prevent smoking.

On the subject of other people smoking, I am with Eldrick on that, their bodies, their risk, providing they don't blow smoke into my face when walking along with their cigarettes. (and they do!).

However, don't think the risk of cancer is just lung cancer. A good friend has, in the past 6 months died from throat cancer, a really horrible illness leading to an early death. A lovely, lovely man who had all the warnings of a nasty cough but who failed to give up. He did try but sadly too late. Smokers, please, if you develop a cough, don't shrug it off, see your GP for help. You would not want to suffer as he did.

Let anyone put whatever they want into their own bodies, as long as they dont inflict it on me or expect me to pay for their addiction or treatment.

I couldnt care less about packaging, different colours or numbers for different strengths, its all nonsense. If someone wants to kill themselves with smoking, drinking, heroin, fish and chips or tubs of lard then go for it full steam ahead. Its your life, your body, your brain. Just dont expect other people to either fund it or treat you when you get ill from it. Doesn't seem unreasonable to me! Get rid of the nanny state and the sooner that people take responsibility for their own actions the better.

5EXY,
The Government's attitude does make you wonder if they think us 'plebs' who didn't attend public school actually have a working brain cell!!!Perhaps, for our own safety, cream cakes should be in plain packaging, and behind shutters.
Drink should have brown labels.
Fish and chip shops (and MacDonalds) should not be allowed to openly display their wares

I wonder what they think attracts heroin addicts to heroin - it certainly isn't the ornate packaging! It seems more socially acceptable now to use 'crack' than smoke.

Evening buses around here have been cut, which I'm sure the government will think is a good thing. After all, why should we who can't afford a chauffeur driven car or taxi go out in the evening? All we'll do (apparently) is drink

Hi Kellie,
Yes, I know about fibres being brought home - that's just something we have to be aware of and live with.
Like I said, Bi l and ex didn't actually work with the stuff, but those who did would walk past them wearing their protective clothing.
Sometimes, you can get plaques on your lungs from contact. The government used to compensate people who had them, but have since decided it's 'probably not' a life shortening situation, so people should just live with it.

The Gov are saying it's bad for your health to smoke. So is...
Drinking
eating many foods
too much sitting about infront of TV, PC or game consols

So are the Gov going to debrand items on all things that are said to be bad for you?
Please don't say something like if you drink you only hurt yourself thats not true. If you drink & drive you can hurt plenty of other people.

Bobtanian,
What I hate now is unless you know which "colour" you smoke....((used to just say packet of XXX 8's)) now you have to know the colour or you may get 16's.

When they first dropped the 'limits' and started with colours I went to buy my regular 8's.....and noone had any idea what 8's were.....only choices were gold, blue or red??????????????

What happens to those cutting down etc when there is NO identification to what strength you purchase???
Just throw me a pack with no name or brand on them????

Hi maggiewinchester,
In regards to
""Just as an aside, my Bil died of Mesothelioma - the 'death warrant' asbestosis, aged 58 - and he'd never worked with the stuff- but those around him had. My ex was working with him at the time, and they both lived with me and my sister - so I, my ex and sister have that little 'glitch' to live with."""

In Aussie j(not sure about elsewhere) ust as many wives died from asbestosis as their husbands who worked with asbestos...
Apparently the men brought it home from work on their clothes,,,,and their wives shaking out clothes and checking pockets etc would breathe in the fibres...

RamblingRose,,,

I always stopped smoking while pregnant and we barred all smoking in the house afterwards....my kids have also done the same thing...

BUT my (now)exhusband tried to stop (while I was preggy) and he ended up with ulcers all through his mouth and oesophagus.

For some reason his system could not handle the withdrawals....and he tried the patches, lollies the gum and everything...

I think like with all things it just hits people in different ways..

Roy - love the story about your friend - and the doc not knowing he smoked.
Similar thing happened to me when I had chest pains and they carted me off to hospital. Thry couldn't work out what was wrong - lung x ray okay, heart okay (but Blood pressure very high) Only when I coughed (as I was very dry and they wouldn't let me drink) was I asked if I smoked. Then (of course) that was the problem!!
Being bullied at work had (apparently) no causal effect on my wellbeing - it was all to do with the fags!!
I have since moved away from the poison dwarf at work, and still smoke.
Since that time I have been diagonsed with having one kidney and diverticulosis - neither of which can, I believe, be caused by smoking.
If I am diagnosed with emphasemia in the future, I know this disease is hereditary - my father had it at the age of 10 - before he ever started smoking. Not smoking may delay it - but if your names on the bullet.....

I may die early , but I may also avoid, by my early death , alzheimers and dementia - other 'strains' on the NHS.
Just as an aside, my Bil died of Mesothelioma - the 'death warrant' asbestosis, aged 58 - and he'd never worked with the stuff- but those around him had. I'm an expert at giving up, done it loads of times.

Last time was using Zyban. I had terrible side effects, so I ditched the horrrible things and had a ciggie to feel better.

I called the Quit line once, told them I was totally addicted. Things were going fine for about a month, then got a call from a Quit supervisor....... and was told I was off their list because I was taking too long. Thanks for the support.

I've also tried the chewing gum & a hypnotherapist. He was a nasty man :-P

It's the only filthy habit I have. lol

I had a friend who smoked 60 a day, He caught pneumonia and stopped smoking over night, he told me that the doctor used a camera to check his lungs for damage, The doctor said to him after the lung inspection, It's a good job you don't smoke because it would have killed you had you been a smoker? he stopped using the cold turkey method no problem,

about a year later whilst i was having a fag he came to me and said how come when you take a drag, why do you take a deep breath, i said because when i smoke thats what i do, he said well i never inhaled when i smoked,

That is one such explanation

One piece of advice to those who do smoke - no matter what the brand and the length of the cigarette do NOT smoke past the print - that is where the danger lies and the concentrate etc.

~But the question , should packets be plain?

no, each brand should be identifiable..............

lets propose to the MPs that their rosettes are all the same style and colour...........

that would put all the rogue mp's in the same basket wouldnt it?

Just backspaced a long rambling post about smoking during pregnancy.

But it got too personal..so I will condense it and say that the only time I've never even needed to read alan carr or have patches was the times I was trying to conceive....would NOT have risked the health of my baby for anything.

As for gving up now......yep...i will just wake up one day and say RIGHT that's it........and stop.(well read the book at least...I usually stop by about chapter 5) that's what's happened when i've stopped without being pregnant before.

BUT

No amount of nagging, scary adverts, locking cigs away or shoving me outside in the cold will make me ready .....far from it...it's water off a ducks back..I will do it when my head knows it's strong enough to allow me to do it successfully.x.
