Oh yes I forgot, cucumbers have been great too. I think it is a weather thing Jan, we have had a lot of rain and not much sun although one or two periods of warmish weather.

I thought tomato rot was caused by too much or too little water, can't remember which, so maybe that is down to whatever weather you have had.

Jude, you will have a good show of tall plants next year then.

You are lucky to have good tomatoes, in Norfolk, we have been hit with black rot
and we had to ditch 3 good plants....broad beans and french beans a waste of time, potatoes the same................on the plus side, courgettes great, cucumbers cannot keep up, runner beans the same (basically you can't have a meal unless there are runner beans !) have tried freezing them, but not the same....and the strawberries really great, likewise baby leeks..............we have spoken to other gardeners and they have the same problems....it must be a Norfolk thing

More plants arrived Fri:)...just going to a neighbours for some pots to pot them on with:))....this lot are perennials...Delphiniums, Foxgloves etc all the biggies:)

Yes our tomatoes are good, although the skins are tough this year. Good flavour though. Tumbler, Alicante, black cherry and sungold

Enjoying my Victoria Plums and have lots of tomatoes.Have given lots away and still have plenty more.the grafted tomato did very well but the ones I grew from seed were just as good and plentyful.and the cherry ones are delicious red and yellow. :-D :-D

You are lucky with your apples then Joy, we usually have loads but had 4 on the tree, one got some sort of lurgy, the other three are slow growing.


Anyone else grow Heucheras? I have just counted and in the garden and pots we have 15 and only one double.
We haven't been there but not far from us is a nursery that specialises in Heucheras, they have 100 varieties. Such an easy plant to grow and they make a wonderful sight grouped together with all the variation in their leaves. They will survive all but the hardest frosts too.

I know Ann we get some come up every year :-(

we have been enjoying our crop of broad beens and the apples on my trees
are doing just fine considering its their first season and growning in pots on the decking :-D

You will have walnut trees if they bury them.

The pesky tree rats (squirrels) are back in the garden and pinching the few walnuts that I did have grrrrrrrrrr :-( :-( :-(

Thanks jude xx, thanks for replies, my glasses should be back on my nose tomorrow , and ive lost my reading glasses but specky found an old pair of mine so im ble to see now lol, my glasses had come off in the ambulance and ended up 30n miles away however there now in shrewsbury at mums lol . thanks again xx

I usually sow my sweet peas in the spring, but I understand that earlier plants are produced from a spring sowing sorry autumn sowing.

Sadly it is too late for sowing sweetcorn this year and at 2 inches high they won't bear cobs this year. Ours already have the start of cobs

With the cabbage and cauliflower hopefully they are either a hardy all year round variety or spring variety for over wintering. They will hopefully grow well before the winter and can be harvested in the spring. They don' t need to overwintered in a greenhouse or protection unless you are in the north or the winter is really cold like the 2010 winter. We lost most of our spring cabbage and caulies that winter

They reckon sweet pea plants are stronger if sown in the Autumn, but you have to be careful, as mice eat them !!

Another question:

A friend has planted Sweetcorn, Cabbage and Cauliflower....they are all aprox 2" high...are they worth persevering with and should they be in the green house??

After the summer we've had I don't think, on the whole, that they will have overheated. :-D
