Wend * All the nice girls love a tar,
For there's something about a sailor
'cos you know what sailor's are.
Free and easy
Bright and breezy etc etc :-D

Yes, Maggie I worked for Admiralty Expense Accounts from 1956 to 1961, two days a week were spent doing the wages in the dockard. I can still remember having to walk from the main gate (came over on the ferry from Gosport) to the pay room which was over towards the Unicorn Gate and having to pass all the dockyard workers, being whistled at etc. I haven't been back to that part of Portsmouth for years so doubt I would recognise the place. Used to love the atmosphere of all the old houses and pubs. Also used to wander out at lunch times on those days (Thursdays and fridays) and have egg and chips in a little cafe on the corner of (I think) Edinburgh Road.

My OH failed his first driving test when he got tangled up with all the dockyard mateys on bikes coming at him. Nightmare for drivers they used to ride four or five abreast.

I worked in the dockyrd for a couple of years in the '70's - and I can hardly recognise the place now-even the little bit that is still a Dockyard!
Spent many a happy lunchtime wandering around the place looking at all the fascinating buildings.
In those days (gosh I'm only 55!), on a Friday, at 4pm, traffic was held up as swarms of 'Dockies' (including me) cycled out of Unicorn gate. All the fascinating pubs that lined the road leading to the gate have since been demolished, it's all very clean and clinical (and souless) now.

Maggie I'm sure my father must be 'turning in his grave' or would be if he had one :-D He served in HMS Vernon for a while.

Ann, It's changed a lot since those days!! HMS Vernon is now a bar/restaurant!!
I'll try and come - but at the moment, I'm under a 'serious' baby- sitting promise - overnight - as SiL has been given Carling cup final tickets the same day my daughter's working nights!!!

cross fingers Nanny can babysit rather than Granny!!

Whatever you decide is fine for me.It's been about 10 years since I was there and that was to go to the I.O.W so didn't see much of Portsmouth.

I always find Café Rouge comfortable and good value for money. We'd probably be able to book a table. Agree about the Chinese buffet too.

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 5 Feb 2012 13:19

thanks girls ..I do like a good chinese buffet . I have to admit at not really having being on gunwharf ..
Mind is Feb going to be that busy down there? see so long ago since I was last there ..infact it was May 2004 when we sailed to St Malo for our life abroad and we met Mum in the Ship Anson to say goodbye ~~~

will have a think about it all and see what any others think ..so far we are only small so will only take up a wee space,

Wend any ideas ?

Sorry Sharron I seemed to have overlooked you and I didn't mean to ~~ have amended, it will be good to meet you so hope you can make it.

Sharron

Sharron Report 5 Feb 2012 12:03

Be careful, there are two Ship and Castle pubs in Pompey.

The other is down by the Ferry Port.

Sharron

Sharron Report 5 Feb 2012 11:15

I won't suggest anywhere because I know my taste in most things is not anybody elses but there is a map of Gunwharfe on here.

I don't go into Pompey on a Sunday generally so can't say how full places get.

The Watermargin is a big Chinese buffet style restaurant. There is also a Cafe Rouge.

If all else fails there is a buffet on Pompey Harbour Station.

Somebody who attended a previous meet might help. I believe they had one somewhere in Gunwharf Quays although I didn't go. Maybe Joy could help. :-)

Wend Report 2 Feb 2012 17:45

Just a thought, Uzzi. If you're going to be in IOW 23rd-29th, does that mean you'll be ferrying to and from Portsmouth for the meet?
