I see Dermot has written about his school days. How about we all do a short piece on our own school days, either primary or secondary/grammar/High school or both. :-D A way if comparing different eras and methods.

Do have a go at it Sarah.I guess it would be the same as writing your own life story and there are books to help with that. One is called Times of our lives by Michael Oke and he has also written one called Your Life Story. rose is right, the easiest way to start is to give your self headings and make notes then build the story up from there. With your aunt it could start with her life with her parents, then why they died, then her life in the orphanage, life as a domestic etc. when you have the notes you can enlarge them and see where the chapters fall easily. It sounds an enthralling story which needs writing even if it is only to put with you family history notes.

Hi Sarah, I find the best way to start writing is just to do it lol, you can go back and edit and alter later on, but just getting some words on a blank page or screen usually kicks me into action.

Though some like to plan it all ahead, so if you were writing about your gt aunt you might have some 'headers' like childhood, young woman, first marriage etc just to focus on while you tell the story.

Have a go and if you would like to have it read by the writers here, send me a PM and I can give you the members email addresses or forward it if you'd prefer. :-D

hi guys ,
I have been a member since 2007 and like most of us have found some really interesting characters in ours trees. Since I was a young girl 50 now and feeling abit frumpy !! I have always wanted to write . I have never had the guts to do it thought it would be rubbish etc.But after doing my tree I found a Grt Aunt Ada who had a really fasincating life and this woman really has inspired me .It is the stuff that books are made off I think anyway! I would love to do something for her because she had courage and gutts and I admire her for it . Her parents died when she was very young she ended up in Kent in an Orphange with her sister .she worked as a domestic had an affair with an Austrian Baron they had a child , He died she emigrated to Austrailia on her own with her young daughter .She then went on to marry a bigomist ,then a wife beater and finally married for love and companionship . Wow what a brave women to conquer all this and become a teacher after all she had been through. But where do I start !! I have no idea how to write or even where to start but any advise would be gratefuly received. :-(

No Ann that's part of the problem, since we moved I have to have the PC in the lounge on a very small table that gives only just enough room for the keyboard, not ideal as there is nowhere to put papers etc.

AnninGlos Report 7 Feb 2012 18:18

Just train yourself to be more strong willed Rose. Have you got a room away from TV etc where you can put your pc to do it?

Rambling Report 7 Feb 2012 17:50

Ann, what's a "schedule" ? lol I am not good at those at home, though I used to be at work or college, I am too easily distracted by...everything! I am seriously thinking of cancelling the phone and tv contracts for a start ;-)

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 7 Feb 2012 17:43

Rose try 'booking it in' to your schedule. Allot an hour a day i.e. write on your calendar or in your diary or on a slip of paper. From ??? to ??? write up Mum's childhood. and stick to it. That way it will get done. And make yourself not come on here for that hour.

Rambling Report 7 Feb 2012 17:39

I've been reading a lot this week Ann, so maybe that is one of the reasons for not writing, I have got pages of mum's writing about her childhood, and feel I should get it typed up but don't really have time to do it, and everything else that I am putting off lol.

AnninGlos Report 7 Feb 2012 17:35

No problem Rose. Can't get my writing self into gear this week yet although there are a couple of good scenarios on the list. :-D

AnninGlos Report 6 Feb 2012 17:33

Although it looks as if everyone is too busy to write at the moment I'll put a 'hint' post on just for when you are ready. I have run out of the scenarios except for one more which I will put on, but I have found some other suggestions that may appeal to people.

Characters An uninvited Guest and a photographer
Conflict Either the holiday from hell or wanting to be in 2 places at once
Weather unseasonable weather
Setting Cliff top
Object A broken kettle

“The trouble is...,” Yvonne said, rubbing the side of her nose pensively, “the trouble is that Darryn doesn’t think it’s ethical. I don’t know what possessed me to marry such a moraliser. But for him, I could be making a lot of money.”

On-line dating sites are for the young ones, not old girls like me, Dee kept telling herself. Yet, daily she was drawn to look at the pictures – smart-looking grey haired men, even a few with moustaches ... she always did like a good moustache. And they were saying they wanted a lasting relationship with women aged 40 -55. At 50, did she dare?

A picture on your mantle unexpectedly falls and crashes to the floor. As you go to pick it up, you notice a note hidden behind the picture. The message is from the the person in the photo. It instructs you to do something important. What does it say? what happens?

You’ve been playing Scrabble with an anonymous person online. After some Internet chatting, you realize that the two of you live in the same town and decide to meet at a local pub. What you didn’t expect was to fall in love

BC I am currently 'lost in New Brunswick' in pursuit of ancestors I really wasn't looking for and who are so far back there can't be more than the teeniest bit of genetic material in me .. it might be a good story title but that's about it, and I can't think of anything to write :(
