I see the courts are already handing down harsh sentences ( falls on floor laughing my head off )

19 year old gets 1 day in prison for robbing store of 2 tea shirts, but released because he has been in custody for more than 24 hours

so the fact he only manages to get away with 2 items makes it not a serious offence then

they the authorities are having a laugh

Rose, you're right about riots - nothing new. Different scale as you say but modern technology means there's a bit more orgnaisation about it.

The petition's a bit imbalanced isn't it? Why just take benefits off those on beneifts? Why are they not suggesting taxing those working on a higher level as well? That's because it's easier to tag those involved as scrounging lazy scum. It's also less intelligent to do that.

There are going to be a lot of reasons why people have got involved in this - none of them justifiable in my opinion but after stopping this chaos and punishing those guilty with the law, the country needs to better address the problems that have led to this.

but with ref to my previous post, this has been happening on a small scale for 20 years! The police did nothing then, under our dear departed 'tough' law makers...it wasn't a 'no go area' it was a perfectly ok estate of social and private housing...and all they would do is move a gang of 'kids' away from one area to another....every night!..

This isn't new...only the scale is new. The rot set in a long time ago.

This is what happens when you allow sections of society to dictate how they are policed. Some areas (and it's true of my wider area) are no go zones. THEY dictate the terms and the police are too neutered to do anything except go along with it for fear of what these "communities"may do in a fit of temper if they don't toe the line.

it's about time the police heads stopped meeting with these people and started policing them without fear or favour

But when you have a police chief who refuses to allow his officers to go into a park after dark because of "health and safety" (i kid you not) that's never going to happen.

When i was a child I was in awe of the police. The children from the *no go* area in town laugh in their faces. They know their *rights* and the police hold no fear for them....they're feral and are left without directon as everyone, police and teachers are too scared of the consequences to try and put them right....

While we allow these people to hold us to ransom with the threat of riot when things don't go their way..it's never going to end....enough of the talking ..and more of the strong armed tactics are needed...before we get another generation of feral children running riot.x

these are not immigrants - they're home grown - the immigrants are pestering people in central London begging outside Harrods, pretending they are holding babies in their arms, which they are not - Romanians mostly

biggest mistake we made was entering the EU - now we have masses of EU people sponging off our already overloaded welfare system and the NHS

Rambling

Rambling Report 10 Aug 2011 11:51

And I wish people would stop banging on about immigrants in connection with this ,

I'll put money on there being less than 0.1 percent of those causing trouble being 'immigrants'... some may be 3rd generation with an immigrant background but that makes them as British as any of us. ( lol that could describe me...and to be honest I'm seriously thinking of "going back where I came from").

I put my three penny worth on one of the threads two nights ago, submitted it, and then read, in red print, that the thread no longer existed!

Last comment a good idea. On one website, someone suggested fitting them out in orange garments as well as shackling.

When will our "government" learn? Everyone needs to know boundaries, what is acceptable and what is not.

Think shutting down mobile phones etc would be a disaster for some businesses - one of my sons relies on his to run his taxi business.

It will be interesting to see how these thugs are going to be punished.

It's some ' youth'...colour doesn't come into it...the fact is that a minority of Britains youth is doing this...I have seen youths of all etchnicity.... working together...AND against their own 'race'.

there are a higher proportion of certain races in certain areas... because there are 'normally' ( ie there are more 'whites' living in this town...more 'asians' living in the town up the road).

he was a black boy - fact - had he been a white boy I'm sure Rita would have said so

obviously the fact that he was black is neither here nor there but why on earth is it offensive to say someone is black but not that they're white!!!

Please remember the 3 British men from the Asian community who have died...been murdered, hit and run, while defending their homes. The 200 people who stood in vigil waiting for news at the hospital have been praised for their dignity.

Rambling

Rambling Report 10 Aug 2011 11:23

I'm getting a bit tired of people making out this is a recent phenomenon...

1990 my mother and I left the formerly nice council estate we lived on because of the gang of youths who made life hell every evening outside our house, drinking, taking drugs, setting petrol on fire for the 'fun' of it, kicking or trying to pull out the fences...and the response was the same then..."we have nothing to do, when you were our age you had coffee shops and youth clubs"....and when I was their age I can remember some of my age group saying much the same!

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 10 Aug 2011 11:15

I wonder why his colour matters, Rita?

There were faces of all colours out there rioting, and businesses belonging to people of all races were looted, let's not make it a race issue when it isn't, please.

It's not a witch hunt of children of school age - it's a determination to punish the kids who are trashing everything who ARE of school age and their parent/s or guardian.

My middle brother was a Ted, the interest was mostly music and although they hung around coffee bars with juke boxes mostly they did just that - hung around. They may well have seemed intimidating in numbers but they were not thugs. Now I do admit there were some gangs in East London who found the pastime of 'paki bashing' a laugh, the deep inside pocket of the drape coat was used to house half a house brick.

I'm not starry eyed about those days, but these Teds were a tiny minority. If they were seen looking menacing locals would make sure they dispersed PDQ.

I was a Mod, friends were Rockers, we had friendly anti-the other banter. The Rockers took the mickey out of our Vespas and we did the same about the grease machines.

Yes the Brighton clash was shameful but those who took part were actually fearful of police reaction and the consequences that may affect their jobs. They had jobs, that's how they managed to dress so well and keep their scooters on the road!!

There's no comparison between the 50s and 60s and 2011.

99% of them are well behaved of course but it's amazing to see what the other percentage can manage to do - as has been said, these are mainly children who should be in bed, not roaming the streets causing mayhem - if they're acting like this at such a young age, what hope is there for the future

Just commenting on the media images I'm seeing. I haven't yet seen any mature faces...they all look like youngsters to me. Yes, many have got their faces covered, but by shape, size, demeanour, shows if they are a teenager, or more mature adult.
Just MY opinion of course :-)
