I have been a member for ages but dont post that often, I come on most days to read the boards but only post if I have something relevant to add!!

I have joined in with threads on several of the pages and although i am not what you would call a prolific poster i think most people recognise me when i do post!

I don't know anybody outside these boards but have often started discussions or joined in with others.
I think that sometimes if a topic is moving quickly some posts get overlooked and people might feel that their contribution was ignored (not me as I have skin as thick as a rhino!!)

a plan to welcome newbies!
If we see someone starting a thread on any of the other boards we could post a comment along the lines of welcome to the boards, come over to chat for your proper welcome, then whoever spotted it could start a thread on chat called a big welcome to **** and we could all then post on there?? it would be then up to the new person whether they wanted to come and say hello or not? its easier to spot new people now that we can see how many posts they have mad.

Anyway just an idea but others may hate it!!!

Oh you know what I mean, Sheila :D - I don't think friendship can be forced as a lot of people seem to suggest on here, it just happens when you click with people as we did - bout time you bought me another!

Susanwithnumbers that wasnt patronising, it's what most of us mean I think.

Regarding the whole new people thing, I'm not really bothered about welcoming new people - I see this more as a website than an online community. If people have something to say that's interesting to me then I'll respond the same as I would to someone I'm used to speaking to - only difference is I'm more likely to notice posts from someone I've seen about a lot and I'm more likely to get the tone of what they're saying. I haven't really got any friends on here and I'm not looking to make any but I dolike laugh and a discussion on here.

Edit the last post as it sounded sooooooo patronising.......To say......I know I am welcomed on overseas threads cos now and then I look in and say hello....not once has anyone been rude to me and I have been welcomed......

Susan10146857

Susan10146857 Report 23 Jun 2011 01:33

Well....I would just look upon them as ignorant wotsits Sylvia.....You pay your subs and anyone else who does, has a right to post....but nobody has a right to be obnoxious.

After a time, one gets to know who to speak to and who to avoid. I converse with all nations and all the people I know would not hear of such discrimination.......mind you....I expect there are the odd few who don't even realise they are doing it......now that is a thread on it's own....I have met many on my travels and they sincerely believe they are non biased....etc.....but that is due to education. What peeves me is when the person is highly educated and still so rude......but like I say.....room for another thread methinks.

I hope you have got over it Sylvia......we and you are just ordinary posters. You know that you are welcome on any threads :-)

BC

no worries!

Susan

it was on the open boards of Chat, but early in the morning UK time.

and, no, I don't judge anyone by nationality by any means

................. but I am finally speaking out about it as I believe that discrimination of any kind is wrong, and this most definitely was a type of discrimination

I don't judge anyone on looks, or the way they talk or whatever ............... I judge people based on my experience with them.

That's the way I was raised, and that's the way I've always behaved.

ps ............. I knew there was a reason I was still clinging to my desktop! :-)

Susan10146857 Report 23 Jun 2011 01:01

I have just read Sylvias posts

That is disgusting and nobody should have ever said anything of the sort. I wou
Ld hope that any of us who saw such discrimination would have said something about it.

Was this by PM Sylvia or on the boards?......I know I have seen some vile postings in my time but not of the nature you describe.

As for upsetting the 'Brits'. Whoever said such a thing is soooo wrong.

None of us own these boards......The only reason that I would personally 'Have a go' is if someone was being unfair or down right rude......and it wouldn't matter to me which country they came from.......Other than that.......well, it is downright rude for us to be any different......There are the same rules in life for everybody.

I know for a fact that some of us have given the benefit of the doubt to a couple of members.....giving them more Lee way than perhaps we should have......but....that is life.

Please don't look upon wind up merchants as how Us in the UK are.......just like yourself....we are all characters who need Lee way now and then.......The Overseas persons who have ever got my goat.......I
Look apon them as just that.......a person who has peeved me.....nothing whatsoever to do with their nationality.

So I ask you not to judge us by nationality either. These boards belong to us all. :-)

No I didn't have that one in mind either when I mentioned thread titles. But, it goes to prove a point maybe?

Rambling Report 22 Jun 2011 22:41

Hi Ann, it's good that you have two new posters on the thread.

It wasn't one of the threads I'd thought of to be honest, as it is specific to crafters or those interested to read about those 'who can' lol. As such i wouldn't think anyone could see it as cliquey just 'subject led' so to speak :-)

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 22 Jun 2011 22:13

Have to say this Rose. After you said about long running threads that could appear cliquey I changed the heading on the craft one slightly and re-wrote the first poat, thatw as early this evening. Since then I have been pleased to see two new people on the thread. So there might be something in what you say. Not that we can change the titles of all long running threads (Daff's thread springs to mind). But maybe some could be tweaked.

Hi Uggers

oh, there was no doubt about the way it was expressed to me!

and also to the other person I mentioned, who is not a Canadian.

There wasn't any misunderstanding in our meaning of what was said........... and it was said at different times, under different circumstances, to people from 2 different countries.

Hopefully, as you say, it didn't happen often, and hopefully, it won't happen again .............. although sometimes I do have my doubts about that!

Uggers

Uggers Report 22 Jun 2011 21:13

Sorry Sylvia, I didn't mean it sound like I didn't believe you've experienced it - I don't think it happens a lot but (especially as I used to be on here a lot in our wee hours) I think I've seen probably every sort of prejudice expressed on these boards and that isn't one that sticks in my mind.

I've also seen people suggesting that there's a British attitude against them when there hasn't been so, like other prejudices, it doesn't always exist just because it's claimed.

Robin when I first joined a long long time ago, there was a huge row going on here and my head was nearly snapped off when I ventured an opinion....but here I still am :-D :-D

Mind you there is an over 50s site whose name I wont mention and the rows...well they call them debates...are something to behold. Imagine a sea of piranha fish all ready to bite each others heads off! :-D

TeresaW

TeresaW Report 22 Jun 2011 20:41

Me too Robin7, it was all getting too personal, way beyond a difference of opinion lol

But that's all in the past now, and shouldn't be resurrected. That won't help us get the newbies to join in....

Teresa

a lot of unwise comments were made in those wee small hours!

And there are still some even now!

Unfortunately, that is when most of the overseas members are round and about, so we see rather more of the "bad behaviour" fuelled by alcohol.

we also do a lot of talking to ourselves as well!! ;-)

Hopefully, as someone said, the combining of the two boards will help
