Inspector Green.

Would you take a look at Sue's thread "census info" on the tips board. Perhaps you may be able to answer the queries on it.
thank you.

You're quite right in that the ONS is funded by public money. However, whilst it reports to Parliament, it is not under any form of ministerial control, and therefore operates independently.

A lot of people are under the misapprehension that the government, local councils, tax man, benefits office etc have access to the census returns, which is not the case at all. What they will have access to is anonymous statistical data, after it has all been crunched, probably some time late 2012. The returns themselves are even exempt from the FOI.

For example, the government may wish to know how many people there are over 60, in order that they can plan how to fund pensions. Companies might want to know where there are people with particular qualifications with a view to expanding in particular areas. Education authorities will be interested to know the expected profile of children of school age over the next decade.

The list is endless

This is why it is important for you and your family that you complete your return accurately. If you don't you will be the ones who loose out in the long run.

Rather than fill the form in, why not complete it over the internet?

Or THE TAX PAYER.....

my census form arrived yesterday. I took it to bed with me for a bit of light reading! lol

All seems fairly straight forward to do. Lots of things to skip. It won't be as easy to scan for future geneologists! the 1911 was nice and compact. Wish I was around in 100 years to see what they do with this one!

Shame it is going to be the last one. where would our family trees be now without the previous ones!

Just come back from the half day course for Census Collectors, so raring to go.

If you get Q17 wrong on the English form then a Collector will have to call and ask that you try again.

Forms are sent out and collected back by the Office for National Statistics. The Census is nothing to do with either the government or the local council.

Next question?

I didnt find the census form difficult, but I dont think they will be much use to future geneaologists. No questions about whether you have hereditary illnesses for instance, which I seem to remember have been in past censuses. Thats how we found the psoriatic arthritis is in the family.
