Inspector Green.

Would you take a look at Sue's thread "census info" on the tips board. Perhaps you may be able to answer the queries on it.
thank you.

It seems its going to cost about £250millon give or take a few million.£150Millon going to the American firm who will process it,and it has to be shared by other members of the EU.so much for privacy and austerity.**M**

wow, alot of unhappy people , upset about no free pens and having to fill in the census! ironic because we all joined this site to look up family trees, which means we get to look at the older cencus from years ago, like someone said on here, our family members will see what we put in years to come, so lets help them out and put what we can! i see what you mean by intrusive questions , but its just a question really, just put the truth to it. free pens would also cost the tax payer around 25 million pens, im guessing at around 2 million quid! i wouldnt be happy at the goverment spending that for me to fill in a ten minute form which i can use my own pen! id rather they spent it on the rubbish doctors near my house! that could use the money lol. anyway hope you all have fun filling it in, im just jealous because i havnt got one yet!

Adrian.

You have it all wrong ....no one is unhappy on here ,its all tongue & cheek talk .

Some people chose this site for a Chat , that's what we are all doing !!

A lot of peeps have already traced their family trees and are happy to chat about sweet nothings !!!!..... we all pay the same subs

I suppose to a non regular poster it does seem as if people are complaining but it is just banter. Nobody seriously wanted a free pen..... honestly! Just join in and have a laugh. The forms will be filled in correctly i promise you.

Just to mention that householders have been filling in their own census forms since at least 1841. In the early days of censuses they were addressed to "The Householder" and asked questions about the relationship to other members of the household. Working wives were not expected to show their occupations (not sure how this question would have been worded though!!), so it's likely that when you come across errors in transcription of your ancestors' names it may well be because the enumerator could not read their writing.

The enumerator only filled in the forms that the householder had not filled in - for whatever reason.

I saw a great picture in a book once of a teacher showing a class of youngsters how to complete the form on behalf of their parents - that must have been after the 1870 Education Act - so maybe the 1881 or 1891 census.

Adrian
i have enough pens to equip a school
if i was really bothered about a free pen i would of filled it in online
we are just having a bit of fun
where would we be without the previous census's

the only thing i dont agree with is the forms been processed in the USA the millions that they are going to be paid
would be best served been spent in this country

The ONS is responsible for processing our census.

However the contract to process the resulting data on their behalf (the stats that is, not your personal information) has been outsourced. British companies were able to tender for the work on a competitive basis.

Around 35,0000 - 40,000 people in the UK are being employed to assist with the collection and scanning of the records.

We've been sent 2 forms, 1 in English & 1 in Welsh. Complete waste of money; I neither read or write in Welsh

Claire, We asked the question on our course last week. All addresses in Wales are sent two forms automatically as this worked out far cheaper overall than having to deal with individual requests to send the alternative.

If you don't use the form, then the recommendation is to shred or destroy the front page and re-cycle the rest of the form.

More importantly make sure you fill in Q17 properly.....!

In furtherance to my other statement." Lockheed Martin" a leading US arms company was given a £150million contract by the ONS. To support the cencus for the UK. We are oblidged to share the results with all other 26 members of the EU.and the US. As I said before. What price Confidentuality.

To be fair there prob wont be no such thing as a pen in the footcher unless its a relic thats being dug up by time team. So I can't see the point in hand writing it and posting so latter gens can see ar handwriting or signiture. I reckon in 100 years they will come out digitalised anyhow. Why else would they be asking for massive writing like we did in reception class. Best way in my mind (lol) to ensure the descendents see yur handwriting ( and indeed a pen) is to do online but keep handwritten copy of "original" form to be scanned into tree and filed with stuff labelled time capsule at a later date along with a genguine pen from the day. That way saves transcribers mucking it up. I would have prefered to see denomination on the religeon bit and a description or even passport pic where the ethinicity is - but thats just me.
