I put up a thread to inform anybody who wasn't reading here, but for those who have posted in this thread -- today on GR's Facebook page (where we must go to see their responses to problems raised):

"We will be changing this back to show the time of the posts but you may not see the change for a few weeks yet."

Yay!

Huia Report 28 Feb 2011 03:20

I also am one of the members outside England and I did not ask for the change. I didnt have problems with the GMT times, but then my arithmatic is simpler than those of Janey and Sylvia. Add on 12 hours, then depending whether it is summer here or there add or subtract and hour for summer time, but I must admit when that change is made I have to think hard for a short time, but having had a score of 91% in a modern maths exam back in 1974 I think I can say I dont have too many problems there.

Janey

I asked on fb for the change to be reversed ......... several times in fact, as they didn't respond!

On Feb 18, GR posted the following on one of those requests

...The reason the times were removed from posts is because we used GMT time and this was confusing for international members. We are currently looking into options that will allow us to put times up that will make sense for everyone

My response to that was:-

Genes Reunited .............. I AM an international member ....... and I'm one of a lot of international members who are most upset at the present system!

It was not at all confusing!

We're not fools you know ..... I can very easily deduct 8 hours from GMT, or add 8 hours to "my" time to determine what it is in GMT!!

There were also comments similar to mine from other posters.

I asked the question again on Friday

and I will be re-posting it later tonight

all in the hope that GR will eventually respond.

BTW ................... I know of at least 6 other international members who do not like the change

I do not know of even one who does like it.

so again, we have the somewhat mythical "other members"

"the change was made because people outside the UK asked for it."

InspectorGreenPen, where *do* you get your inside information?? (A question many have wondered about for a long time.)

I happen to know for a fact, as SylviaInCanada points out, that these two people outside the UK have begged for time-of-day stamps to be returned.

I and others have also pointed out that discussion board software available for at least the last 15 years allows users to select their own time zone for the time stamps on posts.

I myself would probably retain UK time, just because that is the time that applies for a large majority of people using this site and I prefer to know when they're posting by their time, to have an idea of when to expect them back without doing the arithmetic.

So can you tell us the source of your assertion? I haven't seen anything from the site management to that effect, myself.

IGP

I do not know of anyone outside the UK who asked for the change to be made.

All the ones I know are dead against it!

As far as I know, that is the excuse that GR is giving ....... they posted it in repsonse to one of my questions on facebook.

from someone who lives outside the UK

Wend Report 27 Feb 2011 20:19

Apparently UTC replaced GMT in 1972 - not that long ago! It means Coordinated Universal Time - isn't that just obvious -!!
Basically, it is more precise by fractions of a second.

Wend x

20.20 GMT!

Its alright as it is - the change was made because people outside the UK asked for it.
