JaneyCanuck Report 1 Mar 2011 17:16

I don't have trouble with the %$#@ thing, I just can't stand it on principle. ;)

It's a local thing. In "the rest of Canada", in English, we say the meeting started at 10:30 a.m., I went to bed at 11:00 p.m., and so on. But in Quebec, they have meetings at 16h00 and the like. But you know perfectly well that nobody actually says they went to bed at 23h00.

It's a stupid affectation, just like writing that you paid 15 000,00 $ for your car; dollars are a North American currency, this is North America, and we write it $15,000.00. It isn't a matter of Eng/Fr, it's a matter of NA/continental Europe. Quebec isn't in continental Europe. ;)

And Syvia, whoever wrote "01:42 am GMT" was just as bad. ;)

"a.m." and "p.m." go only with the 12-hour clock. That's the whole deal with the 24-hour clock; no a.m. or p.m.

Does anybody actually have a 24-hour clock .....? ;)

Wend

Wend Report 1 Mar 2011 16:41

If you have trouble working out the 24 hour clock, do what I did years ago. If you remember 'old money' then you'll know that there were 12 pence to a shilling. Therefore, for example, 20 pence = 1/8d (one shilling and eight pence). Converting old pence to hours 13:00 = 1/1, 14:00 = 1/2, 15:00 = 1/3 and so forth, the last number of each being the 12 hour clock time.

Probably makes me look stupid (which I am when it comes to maths), but it worked for me!

SylviaInCanada Report 1 Mar 2011 01:19

But Janey

it IS 00.42 am GMT, as well as 00.42 GMT

if they can put 01:42 am GMT

why can't I use 00.42 am????

as well as the stupid American way of doing dates

which I can never work out because I can't tell my 90/06/06 from my 90/06/06!

that's why I almost always write out the month!

Oh all right.

7:47 pm ... what the heck is this place called ... EST at this time of year I guess.

12:47 a.m. the next day GMT.

And I refuse to use the 24-hour clock, so don't even try that.

...... Sylvia, you can't do that. You can't say "0:xx a.m.", you have to say "12:xx a.m." or "00:xx". I'm pretty sure. You're just trying to sneak the nasty 24-hour clock in there, I know.

That and commas for decimals and spaces for commas, stupidities seeping out of Quebec, if I may be ethnocentric for a moment, which needs to realize it lives in North America, not Europe.
