What was a bread poultice for? Was it splinters?

A paste of Epsom salts is good on a boil.

EMBROCATION ! I've been struggling for the word

Sloans liniment and white horse oil.really smelly and stronger than any of that deep heat stuff. My dad rubbed it on his chilblains by mistake and leapt out of bed with burning toes ! No amount of washing removed it.

Rita, if I can find the old box I will pm you with details of manufacturers of Snowfire. I think it is in one of OHs drawers.

Amazing how many old remedies we remember. Virol was lovely. My Mother used to buy some horrid stuff in a bottle called "yellow mixture". I haven't a clue what it was for, but it was vile.

I bit my nails until bitter aloes were applied. It didn't stop my brother biting his.

Interesting to read all the posts.

Carters Little Liver Pills.Never took them, don;t even know what they were for but remember the adverts. Bile Beans.

My dad took something for a bad back that made his wee blue.

Does any body still suffer from night starvation and have to drink Horlicks?

My mates old dad had short term memory loss and was obsessed with his bowels. The doctor put him on an orange flavoured drink called Fibogel I believe.Rather than give him the huge quantity of this that he believed he needed we would give him two orange Tic-Tacs with a glass of water and tell him they were Fibogel pills. Apparently they were very effective!

Hi Dorothy Teresa. I like Milo also. The last time I saw it, it was in Sainbury's, if that helps. They also used to sell it at the Co-operative, but don't know about nowadays.

Hi I checked the Boots web site
It is still listed as able to order?
Free delivery to a store or charged to your home

Might still be worth it if you want some to keep by you, just check the expiry date !!

How about those lovely Victory V cough lozenges.

DizzyL I think what our parents used to call bilious attacks are what the doctors and media now call norovirus (makes it sound much more technical and scary!). Still the same tummy bug our kids used to get.

Julia

Julia Report 14 Jan 2011 17:41

Ann, I used to get those bilious attacks regularly. My Mum used to dose me with 'Indian Brandy'. It was neither Indian or Brandy, but whatever it was, it worked.

Golden Eye Ointment was the one we were told would ease arc-eye but I never needed it. Probably far fewer welders now to buy it.

I liked Victory V lozenges but even better were the black gums they made.Too many of those could make you remarkably billious!

I think bilious attacks were just another name for indigestion!

Remember malt with great affection. Parents used golden eye ointment on me with great results. Have germaline in tube and it is still pink, but does not smell like tin. Also remember antibiotics not working but salt did. Some old remedies still work, some modern work better, who knows.

Julia, I was just going to mention Indian Brandy, having suffered a tummy ache for a fortnight now!

We had Zambuck instead of Germolene. Phew!

A 99-year old friend of mine, still physically fit, rubs Dog Oil into her joints every day, and my grandma who would have been 125 used Doctor White's Compo for everything.
