Our two tins of Germolene ointment are almost empty - you may remember the wonderfully clean smell of the contents. We bought a tube of Germolene some while since, but it does not smell so clean, and healing, and is not a patch on the old stuff.

I would love to find some of the old variety. The tins were small and round. Anyone any ideas?

Try googling for it. We found basilicon ointment by doing that. We have always used it for a drawing ointment and to remove splinters, which my OH is always suffering.

Thanks for your reply Jean. I have googled it, and yes, Germolene is available in tubes, same pink ointment as in tins. The Germolene we got in a tube was white.

The white Germolene is a cream rather than ointment and the white one has anaestetic in it.
Yes the old gooey ointment is my prefered type and I have to buy it to send to Canada and Australia too. It is always in great demand either to be posted out or to be taken if we are visiting family and friends.

Glad you found what you needed

Lindain - didn't realise there was a difference in the tubes of Germolene - you live and learn.

Dawnie - I love the smell of Germolene as well!

My late aunt used to have Marshmallow ointment in her medicine cupboard, we used it up years since, but a neighbour swears by St James Balm.

My vaseline is in a plastic jar with a screw lid, must be past its sell by date, like everything else in our medicine box.

I used to swear by TCP & although it´s still available it´s nowhere near as strong as it used to be,
I love Germoline too, but I have been surprised at the number of over the counter medicaments that aren´t sold in Spain, with no alternatives on offer.
I have tried to buy Gaviscon, but was told it´s not sold here, so had to resort to asking my brother to bring me some from England.
As for Golden Eye Ointment, my gran used to swear by it, but I think it contained a small amount of what is now a banned substance (I think mercury, but wouldn´t swear to it)

I think you're right, wisechild,I vaguely remember Golden Eye ointment, and I also think that it had mercury in it as well.

I think that Gaviscon is still available in Australia.

I have never heard of Germolene, that is not familiar to me at all.

Anyone remember Hypol, cod liver oil? I used to love that stuff,it tasted like almonds...

I bought some Snowfire fairly recently. You have to ask for it though as it doesnt seem to be on show.

Hi Rita and Jean
I suffered every year with chilblains when I was a child in the days before central heating. We always had Melrose to rub in.
Anyone else remember that one?

Dinnefords and gripe water were always my favourites. I used them for hangovers when I was probably old enough to know better than get them!

Liquifruita is another one I remember.Didn't it have garlic in it?

What about Eucryl tooth powder.I always loved the taste of that and it came in lovely sturdy plastic boxes.I think you can still get it but in a much less robust box.

Delrosa rose-hip syrup. That certainly made me what I am today, well portly!

I can remember most of those remedies. The Germolene in the tin smelled lovely - it was known as the pink ointment in my family.
I hated Liquifruita - I always thought it smelled of onions and I loathed onions when small but garlic was the main ingredient.

I can remember Golden Eye Ointment and also Iodine, my Dad was one for using that as he had been an army medic so I supposed used it a lot. He would blow on the wound as he applied it to help stop the stinging, not very hygienic but it always healed ok.

I have been using Vaseline lately, my hands got very sore so I plastered Vaseline on before bed and wore a pair of cotton gloves purchased from the local supermarket for a pound - they were purple of course lol - called Minigrip gloves/multipurpose house and garden glove. Made all the cracks and rough skin go away.

I too took Virol or cod liver oil and malt. Gor some when my son was small but he didn't like it so I had it, he loved cod liver oil by the spoonful tho and still buys the capsules today sometimes.

I just found this site with some interesting reading:
