Carol, you said.......Tower blocks have been taken down that housed many who did not want/require a family sized house

answer:

Inner city tower blocks were, before the last gov came in and their recent budget changes were being demolished and replaced with modern housing which all of the residents were ecstatic about!!

Amy

Amy Report 22 Oct 2010 21:27

So Footie why are you allowed to do work that clearly is not recognised if you dont get paid for it ?

There are a good number of purpose built homes round here for the elderly, it's true that there are perhaps not enough to meet needs...could be in part down to the fact we are living longer on average ( and perhaps that is less common for elderly parents to go and life with one of their children?).

I can't remember where I read it ( oh yes I can lol, Dara O'Briains new book ) but apparently the average life expectancy in this country has more than doubled in the last two hundred years.

Carol

"If when giving the right to buy, the Government of that time had insisted that the money raised was to be used to build replacements there would be ample social housing available."

Thats very true. It was Mrs T who forbade councils to use the money that way, scandalous.

Carol, pogwosh, it is no cheaper to build the out dated, unsafe prefabs then it is to build a modern eco friendly building! BUT as said already, they DONT build prefabs anymore?

Rambling

Rambling Report 22 Oct 2010 21:19

well Mel, i can't really comment then lol when I was that age one GCSE meant one whole subject. I suppose they would have been

Eng' Lit'
Eng Lang'
Maths ( all aspects)
Science ( all aspects)
History
Geography
Religious study
Art
Technology ( which covered carpentry/ metalwork/ needlework I think whichever one you happened to do)
Cookery

Not saying that was better...but it was certainly 'different' lol.

I was answering the comment about the 1940's built Prefabs & those that could be built today, Salt & Pepper.

If when giving the right to buy, the Government of that time had insisted that the money raised was to be used to build replacements there would be ample social housing available.
Tower blocks have been taken down that housed many who did not want/require a family sized house, without equivalent sized accommodation being made available.
In our village we have a few 1 bedroomed bungalows with a small garden. These were built for the elderly/disabled among the 2 & 3 bedroomed houses on a small council estate. There is a massive waiting list for these.
A modern Prefabricated building programme would make more jobs available whilst filling a gap in the social housing.

School should get rid of such incompetent teachers
and employ ones that can do the jobs they are paid for

I don't know anybody that got that many GCSEs when I was that age...I don't think there WERE that many subjects to do lol.

Amy

Amy Report 22 Oct 2010 21:08

What ? are you saying the teacher is incapable of putting out different levels of work to the pupils ? in other words if they cant all do the same she cannot cope ?? god help us then , so are you saying as an untrained teacher YOU are in charge of the less able pupils ? surely they require a fully trained teacher skills even more so .

Rambling

Rambling Report 22 Oct 2010 21:07

English Lit was only worth half! OMG Sorry but that is ridiculous, when did that happen? I am just stunned by that.

ADD: ok read explanation of that.

FootieAngel

FootieAngel Report 22 Oct 2010 21:06

true but like I say if they were employed in mainstream classrooms they would need perhaps 4 for those same 2 in specialised units

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 22 Oct 2010 21:05

for every two class assistants

we could employ another policeman woman or fire person

FootieAngel

FootieAngel Report 22 Oct 2010 21:03

English Lit was only worth half a mark

edit by way of explanation the groups were lower ability but finished lang ealier giving them time to do work for half a GCSE other groups did full as they higher ability and able to do so in time scale given
