Steven - education is Free until the age of 18, which is year 13 (upper 6th in old money)

University education is now charged for English Welsh and N Ireland resident students at in excess of £3000 pa. A 1st Degree course would last 3 years on average, and an HND which also counts, 2 years.

To my knowledge, this has been on going in England for at least 11 years, and certainly before that. Scottish resident students have their 1st Degree fees covered by the Scottish government, regardless where they are studying in GB.

The Student can apply for a loan..note LOAN...to cover the fees charged by the University/College for a first degree/HND, but living expenses have to be found either from the parents or a means tested grant. Even if a full grant is awarded, it isn't enough to live on away from home.

Like you, I didn't go to university, but I'm lead to believe that the cost of the course was free, with living expenses being funded either by a means of a (possibly means tested) grant from the LEC or parents.

MA or MSc courses aren't funded by LEC and cost in excess of £10,000 depending on the University.

Things are different now to the 'old days' lol

DET

edit - oh, Steven has deleted his post. It was along the lines that he thought education for the 1st 10 years was free. It still is + and extra 2 years if the student stays on in full time education for a further 2 years

I would be more than willing to hold her crown. You know the one - brought out for 'special occasions' lol

In all seriousness, my view in this country is that ';the rich get richer and the poor get poorer'. Nothing really changes as there always seems to be a huge gap between those who have a lot and those who have so very little. Makes my blood boil to be honest.

I always thought I was the paranoid one lol

Even if you are playing devils advocate and posting what is not your considered opinion, by deleting you change the context of any replies.

Steven. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and it is expected that not everyone will agree but that makes for a lively, stimulating debate.

Please don't let anyone put you off posting, your position is as valid as anyone elses and if they or I don't like it then c'est la vie

In the course of a conversation I was having today the returning of unused medicines to pharmacies came up and the fact this medicine Is destroyed even if the packets are unopened.

Why can't the pharmacies repackage and reissue this medication? That would save a bob or two

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 26 Oct 2010 19:45

even if we sent the waste tablets to the third world countries
it would save a fortune
and some of these countries just cant afford these pills

same as old specs

The local store throw out hundreds of pounds worth of decent food every week, a box of eggs because one was broken, huge amounts of wrapped bread and veg'... Obviously not with out of date dairy/fish and meat...but surely the rest of it could be collected and used? even if as pig food or similar.

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 26 Oct 2010 20:01

stupid as it may seam Rose the law now states
or so i have been told
you cant feed pigs on waste food isnt that silly
gone are the days of farmers collecting the waste food
from schools and feeding it to the pigs

and all this adds to the extra prices we have to pay for our meat

Rambling

Rambling Report 26 Oct 2010 20:04

I remember the 'pig bin' at school Joy lol.

The veg could be composted though...if we are being given kitchen waste containers as part of our recycling routine then I think the shops should have them as well. I have a compost bin so mine goes in that. ( sorry going a bit off topic lol).

All this food should be given to the homeless charities for distribution. It's criminal that it is wasted in such a way when it could be put too good use.
