I am so sorry to hear your news, it is just four years since my dad died from cancer as well. The hallucinations can be hard to deal I remember having a long conversation about when I learnt speak in Japanese, which he thought I was doing.

I do hope that you can get him into a hospice bed as soon as possible,as others have said, try to get the hospice to talk to the hospital for you

Thinking of you all Puss, hope you can get your stepdad a bed at the hospice, the one here was so kind to my Dad when he was there for respite care and he ended up back there for the last two days of his life. The kindness and understanding the staff showed was lovely, and he couldn't have been better looked after, or my Mum when she was there with him.

Don't bottle everything up, love, let the tears come sometimes, even with your Mum, she will understand.

Puss,

All i can say is dont wait for them to come to you, there should not be a problem re the dressing of his open wound.

You obviously have the name of the Hospice and the name of the person dealing with your admissions request..........call them direct give them an update on the current position...........and ask them if you have your wires crossed re the bed availability for step dad...........if you have not then ask them is there anything else holding up the transfer. Puss, sometimes even though you may not feel like it you have to be a bit pushy to get things moving.

hi, thaqnks again, he is top of the list at the hospice but i cant understand why he is not there as i was told he had a bed there, i get the feeling the consultant wants to keep him in brum and i think its something to do with the open wound on his leg, but surely there are trained staff and doctors there to pack and dress it its not as if he is isolation and you cant catch cancer so yet again i sit tomorrow and wait to see consultant, helen thanks mayby i can speak with you about the one at bicton, and ann thankyou for help, thanks all xxxx

Puss, I have personal experience of the hospice at Bicton Heath, which from what I can gather from what you've said before, would be near to where your Mum and Dad live.

They are brilliant, they really care and you can come and go at anytime. The grounds are so peaceful and are a sanctury when you need a break from sitting with your relative.

Take care hun

Had been following your other thread regarding your step dad, so sorry to hear he is now very poorly.

Puss, have you thought about contacting your local Hospice, you may be able to get someone to come to the hospital to assess your step dads condition in view of securing a bed there.

I can only go on personal experience, but my mum was diagnosed with a brain tumour while on a cruise in the Carribean......she was flown direct to Walton Hospital (neuro) and then transferred to our local Hospital, my brother contacted the local hospice and a doctor came to the hospital to see mum...........she was given a bed at the hospice 2 days later and she stayed for 5 weeks till she died. The care and attention she received there was second to none.........they also cared for my dad making sure he had all he needed (dad stayed with her) the room was lovely with a bed for dad, tv microwave shower etc and a patio where they could sit outside together. It was a truly magical place with fantastic people specially trained to nurse and support the patients and family. I mention this Puss as sometimes we are so wound up in our grief, we forget there are other options to a hospital ward. Thinking of you and your family.

Jean (Monmouth) Report 19 Sep 2010 19:30

Puss, it may be tempting to take him home, but could your Mum cope. It is very hard work, and you would be looking after him 24/7, not the few hours a day which nurses do. Nurses get to leave it mostly at work when they go home, which makes it more bearable.
