About the book
Reader, did you ever travel by rail between Edinburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed in the years before the second world war? Then as the train passed through the Pease Dean you may have seen a fellow-traveller, an elderly minister of most impressive appearance, rise to his feet and stand with bare and bowed head facing towards the woods where the ruins of a forester’s cottage used to stand. It was the birthplace of his father, the Reverend David Cairns of Stitchel, and he himself was the Reverend Principal David S Cairns. From the cottage in the Pease Dean his uncle John had gone to school at Cockburnspath where the dominie recognised him at once as a boy of rare promise. Through John’s efforts and his great success, John’s youngest brother David also eventually went to the university, and the family rose to eminence and from eminence to the flowering of personality which this book commemorates.
