Marilyn and all those undergoing treatment,I am thinking of you and if this thread is helping you to unload all your thoughts that you can't tell those closest to you...well that can only be good.
A few years ago,I offered to head a support group at the hospital, but they refused. It wasn't for giving medical advice, but just to give hope and help people to cope with this disease,as I'm sure with the right attitude it can help so much.
Keep smiling and enjoy each day.
Thanks for starting this thread Puss.

Bless you too, Puss, for starting this thread. So many fantastic people have posted and I'm dumbstruck by the positive attitude all of them have. Such an inspiration and help to anyone who is anxious and worried at the moment. No men, though, where are you? - you sometimes have concerns too, I'm sure. I know my boy does and I keep a regular check on him :-)

Annie from NZ

Annie from NZ Report 1 Jun 2010 20:57

I was diagnosed with Leukaemia on 19 Feb 2009.

I didn't even know that I was ill. I had a toothache and thought a filling had fallen out so made an appt at the dentist. Went to the appt and had a new filling done. About a week later it was still really sore and I looked in my mouth at the tooth and saw a distinct line in it which I found to be a crack. So made another appt at the dentist. He said that I could have a crown done and a few other bits and pieces to repair the tooth. I told him whats the point as it will deteriorate anyway and told him to remove the tooth. Have had a tooth out before so knew what to expect with regard to blood loss. Well this one bled for 13 hours. I had no sleep and was up all night spitting out blood.

The next day I stayed home from work and was feeling rather ill due to blood loss so took myself off to the doctors. They did a blood test to see how much blood I had lost and the dr didn't seem to concerned at that point as the bleeding had slowed to an ooze and had almost stopped.

I went back to work the next morning and was getting myself a coffee and saw a missed call on my cell phone when I got back to my desk. It was the health centre. I rang them and the receptionist put me onto the telephone nurse and the nurse told me that the dr wanted to talk to me. Straight away I had a feeling that something was not right as I have never had a call after a blood test before. The dr told me an urgent appt had been made for me at the hospital and that I had to get there immediately to see a specialist.

Well that put me into hysterics. I went to the nearest team leader I could find and told him that I had to go to hospital and promptly broke down into tears. He managed to calm me down a little bit. He organised to come to the hospital with me.

When I saw the specialist she initially told me I had a condition called CML and I thought oh thats fine its a condition they will be able to treat that and then she said CML stands for Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. I was so so distraught. I didn't know how I was going to cope. They rushed me in for a bone marrow test to confirm their diagnosis it all happened so fast I didn't have time to worry about the test.

18 mths later and there is no talk yet of remission. I am currently on Glivec which they are telling me I have to be on for the rest of my life, and if it is going to keep me alive then I will. I have to wait for my next blood test for my specialist to decide on the next course of action as there have been a few fluctuations in my leukaemia levels. The options I have been given is to keep my meds the same, increase the dosage of my current meds, changing to one of 2 other medications and down the track as a last resort would be bone marrow transplant.

Every day to me now is precious and I really believe that the visit to the dentist was a blessing. I still worry every day what my future will be and every day I don't want to go to work as I see that as a waste of my time when there are other much more important things in life that I could be doing.

Hopefully I can win the lotto and retire : )

I have had cancer of the womb, cancer of the ovaries and cancer of the breast. This over the period from age 47 to age66. Have been clear since then and am now 75 yrs old. Oh, had a triple by pass along the way! Think positive is my motto, but I always tell people about my experience when they are terrified of the diagnosis.

Having told you all about me,I have also got a d.i.l in Melbourne, that I have asked for positive thoughts for a few times. She had breast cancer 7 years ago,and had a double mastectomy. All went well for over 5 years, but since then has had it in her hip,and had a new joint. Then in her sternum, and now in her spine and lungs.
She is a fighter and is now on a course of Vit B 17,Vit C and ozone as well as radiotherapy. In fact my son says it is like a full time job as she has always got appointments somewhere. The Vitamin treatments are costing $20,000 dollars for 6 months. We are praying that this alternative therapy works.
We are praying for her to beat this. they are so far away and have a son of 10 and a girl of 9.
The hard work she is putting into keeping it at bay is amazing. She also runs a healing group at her local church.(she is a trained physio and acupuncturist).
I do believe in a positive attitude, and she certainly has it.

l have lost many of my family to Cancer all types. I never thought it would happen to me. when I was rushed into hospital with a blood clot l was very ill. a few days afterwards when l thought l was going home. they did another scan and found I have cancer a spot on the kidney and one on my liver. they can not operate just try and keep it under control so for a year I was having to give myself injections. then l found it was stable l still attend the hospitals every three months for a scan then to see my consultant. that was 20 months ago. I have not had to do the injections for that last 16th months.but might have to start back again . l hope not.
l try not to think about it and live each day as it comes.
