The first time cancer affected my immediate family was the end of last year, i would say that i wasn't that close with my step dad and mum, we clashed from a early age and i felt i had no support from them when i needed it most, the attitude was" you have made your bed now lie in it ".
All of a sudden i was devastated i didn't want this man who had been in my life loving my mum for the last 30 yrs to die, my mum took it really bad and told me she was weak and would not be able to get through this again , as she lost her 1st husband when he was 32, best place for him but he was still her husband and loved her, i told my mum i would take care of them and everything was going to be OK, i spoke to my GP she told me he would die !! i couldn't tell my mum that we had to remain positive.

SO my Sdad was admitted to the Richard salt ward where his first penile cancer tumour was removed, they removed most of his penis ,did some scans patched him up and sent him home 7 days later, now we knew he had an appointment 14 days later but we stupidly thought that was to remove stitches or check healing, i did wonder if we were going to get results too but Sdad was adamant that it was all clear, any way Mr foster told us they had found a second tumor and the rest of his penis his lymph nodes in the groin and he would have a new area down below to urinate obviously now we new we had to wait for the 2 week appointment think again, but out of the blue Mr foster tells S dad that they managed to get all the cancer and it had not gone into the lymph nodes so we presume he is not going to tell us any different in 10 days .
Sdad is on his way home sore but happy, through this ordeal me my mum my dad have become very close and nothing more needs to be said about the past , another thing happened too, mum says its a generation thing but if dad tells mum he loves her she says don't be soft , now they have learned they can hug and cry and openly tell each other they love each other, which i know will help with the way dad will have to adapt to his new needs, thank you for reading and thankyou daff for your help xxxxx

Do you think there is a more chance of family members to have cancer affect them, my Dad is his biological sons carer he has had cancer and his brother died earlier this year and his father they both had terminal, sadly the one brother because he was bleeding from the back passage and never had it checked, thats very sad as they said had he been caught earlier he stood a excellent chance.

On my side there haS only been my aunty and a second cousin which is my 1st dads family there is none in my mums side .

Puss what a fantastic idea,

My Dad had cancer, several different ones but he beat them all, his joke was he had more chance of getting run over by a double decker bus outside his door (in Rural France!) then of dying of cancer, yes he won 4 times. My Step Mum has had a masectomy and given the all clear, but then was diagnosed with breast cancer in the other breast 3 yrs later. Another masectomy. Still both parents survived so far cancer. Dad died of leaukemia Step mum alive and clear.

My Sis has had breast cancer but has the all clear as did 2 of my gt aunts, beware it does run in families!

My stepdad had cancer of the pancreas and was told it was removed until 8 months he collapsed and was given 6 weeks to live. He actually made to with in the hour bless him.

My first dealings with cancer was at the age of 11 when my beloved great aunt was riddled with it. I didn't understand it then and to a lot of extent I don't understand it now. All those years ago Cancer was a whispered word and a death sentence but not any more.
So much cancer awareness is about and we have to listen. Not all cancers are killers, but you do have to catch them in time.

Remember you will only die if you are not treated but your loved ones will have nightmares about it for the rest of their lives. get checked out today and put their worries and yours to bed

uzzi that is awfull bet you could write a book bless you, i will defitnatly check more now that my aunty has been diagonosed she smoked very heavy since the age of ten she is in her mid 60s but i think looks older you can see where the smoking has aged her in the face, i gave in 5yrs ago and was only a social or stress smoker occasionaly lit one as i was putting the other one out.

On my mums side there is only her and her mum that are full blood related nan has everything i have but thankfully not cancer so i kinda think of my mum being safe ish xx, oh and thanks for adding xxxx

UzziAndHerDogs Report 31 May 2010 19:02

Puss xx no need for thanks for adding as said the thread is a brilliant idea and if it just makes 1 person think, get checked and be cured then it's done it's job.
I will say once again the "C" word no longer needs to be whispered, it is not always a killer, unless you ignore it. Talkj to your friends talk to the wall but in the end talk to your bloody doctor if you are worried. DO NOT put your families through shit if you can avoid it, it is not their fault, but believe me if you tell them your worries you will be surprised how much it pulls families together ....over to Puss on that one.

Talk don't die silent

On 18th December my dad was told he had 4-6 months to live with lung cancer. Obviously it hit us all hard and put a real dampener on Christmas. I had to cope because of my little boy.

In January dad moved out of his bungalow and into our house with us. He now has the front room as a bedsit.

However, we went to see the specialist in April and we were told that it will be more like a couple of years, that the nurse who told us 4-6 months had got it wrong. This is brilliant news, but for the fact he gave his little bungalow up unnecessarily and gave all his clothes and furniture away. Mind you he knows he can stay with us forever, it is no problem. Will keep you posted with any developments.

Dianna it's horrible when they just give up, maybe you can bring back some of our dads memories in the little things you must have kept or allowed him to keep when he moved out of his home. Your dad was lucky moving into family as most homes don't allow them anything.

Hi to all of you, its good to talk, Wend I agree that some cancers can be caused by stress. We have 4 children, now all in their 20s. Two of them have fought for their lives, one with heart problems, doing well now. but nearly lost him as a baby, and one of our daughters who has aperts syndrome and autism. She has had so many ops we have lost count, when she was a baby she used to stop breathing numerous times a day. I was in a terrible state, not eating, hardly sleeping, hair falling out, aggraphobic, panic attacks. I often wonder if it contributed to my cancers. But I would go through it all again just to have my family. also wonder about chemicals in foods etc.

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 31 May 2010 22:15

Sylvia I wouldn't know about that but I really hope that I didn't contribute to my parents stress, believe me I caused them loads.

Wend what a brill story to encourage others, although sorry to see your name here. It's the likes of you and Daff that helps this little society

Hi Puss,
Mine is a story I hope,to give some hope to others.
In 1948 as a 13 year old,i was diagnosed with cancer of the parotid, salivary gland in my neck.I had the tumour taken away, but it returned 3 years later when I was 16.I went into The Christie hospital in Manchester, and had a 10 hour operation and radium needles(no radiotherapy then). They were like big darning needles stuck in my neck for 10 days and I couldn't eat.
However, after my mother was told I'd never had to work hard,I really have had an extremely hard working life.and on Weds I'll be 75,still working hard and looking after OH who is housebound and can't do anything.
I still attended Christies till last year as any teeth I had to have out had to be done there as the radium softened the jaw. What a wonderful hospital it is.They get my support and a donation in my will!

Sylvia Report 31 May 2010 23:52

Hi Brenda, what a story. as for the radium needles, they sound horrendous. You have done well and I believe being able to keep busy with work or whatever helps those that are able to. I really focused on getting back to work the first time I had cancer, I wanted to get back to normality. I am sure you have given hope to a lot of people have a lovely birthday x
