FIONA looking at a earlier message I see your dad was
going through his wardrobe and was going home it reminded me of my grannie aged 95 she came to live
with us and I used come in the house and she would
be stood by the front door with her nightie on and wearing
her hat and would say our sheila I am going home my
sweet williams will be dying. I explained gran you live
here now with mum your daughter sally and she said
which one is that sally she is dead.I said no gran you have
been living with her 6 months she is your youngest
daughter and she said Oh that one never liked her.I
later found my gran stood at the bus stop in her
nightie and took her home. Mum said she thought
she was sat in the kitchen listening to the Hymns on
on Sunday. Poor gran we had to lock her in
she had to go in hospital because she
would not eat and ended up in a hospital that was very
old and it was a old workhouse before it became a
hospital and poor gran she did not get treated very
well and she died. I thought that was so sad I have
just traced her family tree and being a widow with
so many children she had a hard life working in service
to feed them.Wish they had nice homes then like now.

That is very interesting Jane did you ever stay out late when doing your training and have to sneak in the student
quarters we did .I once got caught and was shown up next
day by a very angry matron who said I would not make a nurse because I had no respect for duty. I remember standing in a line of student nurses and the girl next to
me kept on tapping me on the bum while the matron was
telling me off and I turned round to see what was happening and the matron said listen to me girl I am trying
to turn you into a decent nurse if that in possible. i said
yes sister sorry sister instead of matron and she said Oh
go away I have had enoujgh of you. All the other students
came in my room after and collasped laughing poor me
I was close to tears. I never made it like I said. Being a nanny must have been interesting .My dad died of renal
failure if only they had got those machines that clean your
blood that I cannot spell . Love hearing of peoples past
experiences . What a lovely surprise turning up to your
wedding they must have liked you. I had a nephew who
did his training for the navy at Plymouth we went down to
see him pass out. .

April is seven going on seventeen called April because
my birthday is April and so is my husbands .Today I said
to her would you like ice cream April out of the shop
and she said oh yes please what do you have gran I
reeled off every ice cream and every lolly and in case
none of those were anygood five chocolate bars big mistake she said I think I will have all of them gran
because I cannot remember the first ones you said
and she arrived with eight teddies all called teddy
edward and each wearing some attempt of a jumper
knit by April who told me she dropped all the stitches
so they had holes but that is better because they kept
colder. She got into trouble earlier because she tied a bow
on Jaspers tail and the poor dog was running round in circles trying to pull it off.

I was in trouble Sheila the first week of training.Me my new friend Andrea (she was in the next room to me in the Nurses Home) and an old school friend of mine called Ann.Went to a pub up on the moor .Princetown, where Dartmoor prison is.There was a band called Porridge playing at the pub .We left about 10pm and came out of the pub to thick fog!.Ann was driving so had not been drinking. We set off and within a minute were in a ditch. She thought she turned the wipers on ,but turned the lights off,and because of the fog couldn't see a darned thing.
I bashed my nose on the dashboard and Andrea somehow hit her head on the roof of the car and was concused.Someone rang for an ambulance ,and then said we we going to be taken to the prison to wait for the ambulance. So there we were sat in reception at Dartmoor. There was a board that said how many prisoners there were ,how many on home leave and ..........2 absconders !!!!!!!
Anyway we were taken to Plymouth A&E.The next morning neither Me or Andrea were up to going to lectures.Mid morning there was a knocking on the door .It was Nurse Tutor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.We got a real telling off,and a lecture as to how silly we were going out like that when we were just in our first week of training .We had better pull our socks up ,or else.
I never know how I actually passed my training!!!! But I did and I'm glad because I really did enjoy being a nurse.
I had hoped to join the police, but was too short,so Nursing was my next choice.
We sneaked a lot of boyfriends in to the nurses home. There was a very handy fire escape lol.
Frank I think Chris and me getting married was the high light of the hospital that year. There were lots of nurse ,Dr romances but I don't think they ended in marriage. It's not easy being married to a Doctor!!!!!!!!
But we have managed 29 years so far lolol

Hi Everyone,

Nice to find I was 'missed'. I've not been well, going hot and cold, sore throat, headache and stiff neck!! I feel a bit better today, but I have to watch bad throats as they can seem to be nearly better, then turn to nasty chest infections with me, a dry cough with a raw, tingly chest. Fingers crossed, it tends to be ok since I had flu jabs. We went to a talk on dentistry a few evenings ago and one of the presenters had a bad throat and tickly cough so maybe that's where I caught it. Especially as I had my photo taken with her as she presented the prize for me winning the quiz they did afterwards. I tell you, I have so much toothpaste and mouthwash!!!! lol

Sheila, your friend Beryl sounds fun! Reminds me of Joanna Lumley's character in Ab Fab. Shame about your sailor though!

We were looking at our marrow/courgette earlier and bemoaning the fact that the 2 fruit on it were so small.......2 tiny courgettes we thought.......moved a leaf to trim back as it was getting in the way and there was a big marrow about a foot long!! I picked some of the asparagus peas.......don't think I will like them as I tasted a raw one......hope they are better cooked.

Mel, it sounds like you had run out of steam when you had a lie down. You have been very busy for a while doing the pond with your OH and they always want you to help with something I find!!. You are on the finishing touches now......send some piccies of your fairies when you have everything in place won't you. Look forward to seeing them.

Tracey Report 25 Jul 2010 16:28

Glad your back Ann --But see Dr about that throat you dont let it sild ---

THAT'S -IT-ANN- LUMLEY------COULDN'T PUT MY FINGER ON IT BUT KNEW BERYL REMINED ME OF SOME ONE LARGER THAT LIFE

Annx Report 25 Jul 2010 16:44

Thanks Shirl.......and yes I will go to the docs if it gets worse. I've been off work 6 weeks in the past and needed 2 courses antibiotics......trouble is seeing different docs each time, they think I don't need them till I get even worse!!

Jane

Jane Report 25 Jul 2010 16:52

Ann, I was going to call you later ,we were all getting a bit concerned ,like we do on here if someone is missing !!.You probably wouldn't be able to talk on the phone anyway .Fingers crossed it doesn't turn into a chest infection.
Well done you for winning the quiz. Was that the prize.....toothpastes and mouthwash ? lol

Shirl the toilet wasn't an out house .It was in the bathroom as I remember.I assume the toilet would be collected every now and then. The other loo I used was right on top of a mountain in the Rockies. It was like weeing down a well lol.I have no idea where the bottom was! I didn't like that one.
One of the places I stayed on the prairies was a tiny place called Milden ,where my Dads family moved in the 30's( I think). It was not far from Moosejaw.I love that name.

Sheila

Sheila Report 25 Jul 2010 17:38

Oh do you remember the carry on films Shirl. I think the Yanks were very popular ,me I was as green as grass
thought I had something special even though my couson married one. I remember saying to Bill are you cowboy and ride a horse and things. He said yes honey my second
name his Wild Bill I spend my days shooting Indians and I believed him was like oh really he said shut up and lifted me up and dumped me on the sea wall. showed me a picture of a big dog remember that and came from Vermont in New England. I do not think my dad would
have approved of my romance at 14 just as well I missed him that day. Beryl consoled me by saying well he was proberly married. I had a worse friend than Beryl called
Connie my dad caught her kissing her boyfriend in our
entry and all he said was have you not got a entry of your own she once bought some rhubarb wine to our house
her mum had made and put in the dogs drinking bowl Spot drunk the whole lot and it gave him the runs for a week . I do not know what happened to her.

Jane

Jane Report 25 Jul 2010 17:38

Sheila ,I'm sure Frank and David are not bored reading your tales of Beryl lol
I'm loving them.
Was your Nephew at Raleigh ,in Plymouth?...Just around the bay from the beach where I lived in Wembury was HMS Cambridge. It was a gunnery school, and all the sailors in there free time would walk across the cliff to the beach where all us silly girls would be waiting lol.I remember one day Ann and I had ridden our bikes down to the beach and were sat talking to 2 sailors .We had their hats on.The next minute we spotted my Dad striding across the beach!!!!!!!!!.Steam coming out of his ears.I was an hour late home for tea.My watch had stopped, and I hadn't realised.Boy was I in trouble.

Sheila Report 25 Jul 2010 18:09

Well I am glad Jane someone suffered like me but at least you got through so well done. My trouble was terrified of the infant school hated them bringing
a bowl to wash half way through the morning and having to put our heads down for a sleep I protested each day my mum found me in a coma like state. I have washed and I am not tired.I protested I want to go home.
Junior school was told your not as clever as your brother and got bullied by his previous teachers and was so scared I did not pass my eleven plus and
went to a secondary modern school. 5 girls in our class and 30 boys. Us girls each had to sit by a boy we do not learn much they had trouble keeping teachers spent a week doing plays on stage and if you did not do homework
nobody cared. I loved that school but left without any qualifications i got a job in a office on a switchboard loved that but the manager died and it closed down then at 16 was a hospital cleaner on a ward just helping out and Beryl
said lets do nursing did that for a year surprised I got through the entrance
exam did not pass my training year so worked at chad valley stuffing teddies
and at week ends had a job being a cinema usherette I used to have a torch
and show people to there sits. because I was mad on films. I was allowed to stand at the back and watch but sometimes seing the same old film was boring. Did anyone ever ask people to take them in the cinema if the film
was a double A or a A and a U . Fancy you marrying a doctor . Anyway
wont bore you further had better go the dog needs a good walk nice
chatting so to speak to you all. Glad it re opened a few memories. I could
tell the story of me nearly being killed at Farborough Air show in 1952 when John Derry went through the sound barrier and his plane broke up and crashed lucky I am here now to mention that my dad being a great fan
of that air show. I nearly had a nervous breakdown after that was only young
and just escaped being killed by a engine. I had stitches in my hand and leg still have the scars. sheila take care have a nice week

When are you away Sheila???? I can't find your post where you said when or where you are going.I know it is a special occasion ,just can't remember what.

Sheila

Sheila Report 25 Jul 2010 19:13

Oh could not take the dog out my son in law beat me to it the dog is very popular everyone wants to walk him to get out the house I think for a bit. Yes it was Raleigh Jane think it was near Tor Point or am I wrong. I cannot remember gosh had I lived near sailors I think I would have been so happy have a film called yanks
with Richard Gere this girl meets a yank well the whole village in Lancashire
and it bought back some memories one scene she is rushing to see one guy
off and she is with her friend who is having a baby and they cannot get through
the station the yanks were going to war after training and this girl says excuse
me my friend is pregnant to get past and a women who played Ivy Tilsley in Coronation street says so is half the blo...dy country love. my daughter loved that film but I thougnht it a bit to raunchy for her to watch it was some years ago
and came down one morning before school and she was watching it. I must agree
sailors did not bother me later on I was just glad I think to have a interest in
something different parents could be a bit strict and my mum never told me anything .I bet your dad had a fit. Like I said I nearly got killed at Farborough
air show sat eating me ice cream wondered off I had sat by a ambulance with two men sat on top and suddenly this black stuff came out of the plane that
had gone up to go through the sound barrier didnt interest me at all i think i was thirteen could not see mom and dad and suddenly Charles Gardener the
broadcaster who was comentating said oh my god the plane is brfeaking up
and within minutes the engine sailed over my head some metal came off it
and shot in my leg and I screamed and fainted. I woke up in a first aid tent
with two ambulance men over me and they were saying wheres your mum
wheres your family it was scary and i said am I going to die the man said
no love I dont think so but we need your mum. next thing my brother came in
and he dear soul said are you in trouble where have you been. we laugh
at that now. Dad and mum found me after two hours because it was terrible
the engine had gone into the motor cycle enclosure . I had stitiches in my hand and leg at a local hospital and was allowed home still got the scars .It put
me off air shows forever.the poor pilot s wife was expecting a baby and he had a
student with him and they were killed and she watched the whole thing
in the VIP TENT. Never understood that sound barrier business but I surpose
it all had to do with improvement in flying or am I wrong do not remember
it was so sad glad if anyone can jog my memory.
