Joan I beg to differ on that point. Yes the bankers brought this country to its knees when the global recession hit us, but even when Gordon Brown was chancellor, he was aware of the damaging greed within the banking industry. He has even admitted to complacency when he was chancellor, thinking he would deal with that 'eventually' rather than with some urgency.

So yes, he could have done something about it as Chancellor. As Prime-minister it was too late, the damage was done, and the first thing he had to deal with was the collapse of Northern Rock.

It really isn't a case of liking the PM or your MP, it's whether they can formulate and carry through a recovery package which the UK desperately needs.

It helps if they are personable and photogenic and can string a sentence together, of course it does, but it's strength of belief that counts IMO.

The banks hold a lot of responsibility for the current financial mess but certainly not all of it. Mismanagement of the treasury department is responsible for the majority of this utter mess.

Well it's being seen by the markets as a huge spanner in the works, and the pound dropped a cent against the dollar within minutes. They are worried about the risk of a lib/lab pact, and really want a tory/lib agreement at the very least.

I'm gobsmacked. I honestly thought we would see him offer his resignation this week, probably tomorrow was my prediction, but not before talks are completed and agreement reached one way or another. But to do it when talks are still in progress, when an apparent outline of agreement between tory and lib is on the table, and talks coming up with Clegg and Brown later, it's badly timed I think. It's shaken the markets incredibly hard, when they have stayed steady all day.

i do however find it ironic that, the party with the least votes, has the decition of which of the two partys "gets in" lol x

TBH Kay, no matter who governs we are all in for a really tough time. No party can guarantee not to cut public sector funding, they all will have to. They will also have to raise taxes.

Hes to resign as labour leader and wants a sucessor inplace by the September Labour conference of which he will play no part in the choosing,,,,,,but he will step down anyway,
Talks are still taking place with Libs/Cons/lab/

We'll see how well performance is after the mini budget which is bound to folllow if Lib/Con converge,taxes are bound to be hit,interest rates will rise fast.

I can only see one way to resolve this and it has to be a Lib Dem and Con pact.

Not a fan of GB at all and he didnt get my vote but its very unfair how the parties treat their leaders and lets face it all political parties stab their leaders in the back when the chips are down.

They need to put the country first.

I used to think that Jack Straw would have made a good leader - but, perhaps I was just dreaming.

Such is the inconsistancy of our (current) voting system.

Well I may be daft but even if Lab and Lib Dems do form a pact they still wouldn't hold the majority. Being held over a barrel by Ulster and Plaid, SNP et al doesn't bear thinking about.
