pmsl Berona and Sis!

You have blinded me with science Sis, I am going back to bed, came down to check something and got engrossed elsewhere.

It's a beautiful sunny day now with scarcely a cloud in the sky, yet a couple of hours ago it was so misty you couldn't see past the end of the garden but I haven't slept yet so must go.

Have a good weekend folks, whereever you go back and forth lol

Why do I get the feeling that this thread is going back and forth and getting nowhere?

Berona

Berona Report 17 Apr 2010 03:56

I think we just say everyday phrases as we hear them. A new phrase comes along and we use it for a while, then another comes along and replaces it.
TV has a lot of influence on our speech these days, and if old phrases are used, we tend to copy them without noticing ourselves.

Ooops I missed a lot of replies just before I responded (Janey had pm'd me so I opened the link on the pm and read that, not realising there were more replies)

SRS Hi hon, lol, do I say rushing about a lot too then, lol Never realised I repeated myself so much - well there you go, after a good 60 years of chatting away I suppose I must have done lol!

Must remember to see what our Janey thinks later on

I guess most posters are now sleeping.
Sweet dreams, hope you don't have to spend too much time going back and forth to the loo

Mmmmm..yes

I use Back and Forth....although most colonial Aussie's would say... Back n' Forth ( in a verbal conversation )...:>))

Never use To and Fro....but will say There n' Back.
"Its 300 miles, there n' back to Albury, or i went Back n' Forth to Albury a few times".

:>))

I know you'd normally say pop back with any replies lol you wouldn't normally use forth.

Although I know people that would talk about going forth and multiplying but they don't usually mention the back bit lol ;) Hopefully no one has taken offence by that.

lol I think Liz's expression rushing around is more usual than back and forth.

I don't think I use back and forth at all but Sue's back and forth to the hospital (could be dentist/opticians etc) sounds more natural than all the other examples.

Shall I assume you are talking about me saying back and forth in your first post Janey?

I think of back and forth as in unloading the car for instance, back and forth with bags of shopping, yes, it sounds a**e about face but there you are, if you say I use the expression a lot, then I take your word for it. Just never thought about it really, I am 63 so if this is something used by an older person then I suppose I qualify!
I use the blue a***d fly expression too but not with back and forth, necessarily, more likely to say rushing around like a blue a.fly.

Must go, lots of emails to answer

Lizx

might be back and forth to the boards later on.

sheesh! belongs to me so give it back.

It means....Flipping Heck/Flippin eck or 'for goodness sake!' :-))))

Actually I think the pink Panther may have said it....or was it Top Cat?

Yes...believe it or not...that does make sense Sue....Sheesh!

I dare you to ask Janey about the origins of the expression 'sheeeshhhh'

supercrutch Report 17 Apr 2010 01:54

Thinking about it (and it's bloomin' late) I use it when something is unresolved: back and forth to the doctors, back and forth to the hospital. Meaning I am still expected to attend again as there are ongoing whatevers.

Does that make sense? Probably not, I am off to bed,
(only forth).

'sheeeeshhh' is an expression I've never used - certainly not 'local' to southern England - as you say, SRS sounds a mite transatlantic!!! PMSL
