been keeping up with that

did he suddenly turn crazy, or has it been going on for years? And how much did his wife know/suspect, a la Bernardo??

and over 13,000 police and armed forces, plus private security companies, buzzing around Vancouver, Whistler, and area.

re the name, I tried everything, and that was all they seemed to accept. I will however try for In. 'Cos I don't like seeing it either!

Hello, whoever's about. ;)

Speaking in public, once you do it once, you've cracked it. I've taught, lectured, led discussions, debated on television, debated in front of big groups, been interviewed on tv and radio, all so many times I could never count. After the first time, I loved it. It's really just fun to present something to a group and have them be *interested* in it and want to know more.

Not that teaching biology probably involved a whole lot of that. ;) I've been lucky that what I taught was short courses, or as a guest lecturer in classes, where the students had picked the course mainly because of their interest.

In situations like Fanny's, they've come out to hear you because they're interested, and that's the best kind of crowd. And how Fanny could fail to entertain - unimaginable.

So homegirl Sylvia -- oh, and by the way, any chance I can persuade you to capitalize the "in" in yr handle? I keep reading you as Sylvain, a common name among my business acquaintances and such. ;)

Anyhow -- have you been following the news of the weird??

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1203749

(sank like a stone that did, ha)

The air force Colonel, commander of CFB Trenton here in Ontario, now charged with two murders and two sexual assaults, with more charges from more incidents, going back who knows how long, expected. It don't come much weirder than that.

SylviaInCanada Report 9 Feb 2010 19:43

I taught for a couple of years before we married, and was mainly in a long biology lab so I also had to learn to project my voice so the girls at the back could hear me

I've had very little fear of giving a talk since that time

................. but I do have to have good notes, in point form, in front of me. Otherwise, I'm likely to lose myself and everybody in some great tangent-off-the-record-isn't-this-wonderful type of story!

Hi SylviaG. Two Syliva's on the one thread. What's the collective noun for Sylvias???!!

Sorry I did not say hi before, just woken up to the fact that you are a different Sylvia.

Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Laine are really well known in Australia. It is sad when another legend disappears from our lives.

I am typing this but nothing is appearing on the screen. I think we may have another of those pesky advertisements which freezes the screen.

OK that's better.

FBG I find that standing out the front talking takes you out of the group and your comfort zone. Horrible feeling. I prefer to sit. I also wonder why all this rubbish is coming out of my mouth, and why my brain doesn't have enough sense to make it sound intelligent. I am told it becomes easier the more you do it. Like everything else in life.

I gave a talk to a W.I group on Family history research and associated things LadyK,I didnt stand up to do it as my legs were a bit shaky, but I think I might be able to the next time I am asked to do something similar,if anyone wants me to that is.

It was only an Hour and a halfs drive up into the Preseli mountains and back again for me so they had better have enjoyed it !

But I did pass one of my old Primary schools and Comp school on the way, just a shame that it was dark and I couldnt get a good glimpse of them.....

I think I just remembered enough to understand. Recall works sometimes. If it is what I think it is, well done, good to hear it was successful.

Morning,

Have just seen that Johnny Dankworth had died.

How sad. What a great man and musician he was.

My daughter took me to see him and Cleo last summer at their home in Wavendon. They open their gardens each year and have an open air concert , picnic etc.

They have done so much work bringing music to children and youth.
He will be greatly missed here by so many but I hope and pray that his music will live on in the talents of their children,
My thoughts are with Dame Cleo and the family and all the great supporters and workers at The Stables. X

Janey.
The "talk" has been and gone,I think I did ok cos my sidekick says their eyes didnt glaze over and they did ask lots of questions after.
Another first time for something under my belt.
They liked William Thomas/Beynon the mole catchers story even if you didnt !

Dankworth was a little bit younger than Ian Carmichael who also died this week :)))

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Feb 2010 01:27

And there we were just talking about him! We must be careful in future. ;)

Sad. I expect that if you were listening to him in your youth though, Sylvia, he must have been a rather great age. ;)

Oops, coming back lately as I am -- you should be waking up again soon. ;)

"I understand the point where, if you have a thread and then choof off and ask the same question on a look up thread, never the twain shall meet."

That's the one. The general lookup threads -- I have censuses, BMD, etc., ask me anything. Or the brick wall threads.

The really specific ones, like somebody having Derbyshire parish records, yes, that's a little different indeed. But I would still recommend doing what you did -- giving the link to the underlying search thread. -- And then taking it back to the root thread to which it's relevant.

But yup, no way to convey these ideas to the population at large. I have suggested that lookup thread posters plainly ask others not to post the same thing in their thread that they have already asked on the boards; some do that, some don't. Those general lookup threads I just don't see the point of in any case, and it has been a point of contention in the past on the boards and will continue to be, even if it isn't voiced. Everybody here can do lookups in censuses, and for BMDs for most of the period of registration people can do them themselves. If somebody wants help, they only need to start a thread asking for it, and any member is free to offer it. Threads saying a member can do lookups kind of suggest it's the only way to get such help.

Anyway, yes, I do see your issue, and I've done it myself -- request a Nottinghamshire lookup in a specific Nottinghamshire parish records thread, for instance, when I had a thread about the issue already (but I did give the URL for the main thread). In fact, and I hang my head in shame, I asked two different people with Nottinghamshire parish records threads the same question some months apart, because I completely forgot I'd done it the first time! (Obviously, what I wanted was not there.)

If we ruled the world, it would be simple.

Anybody requesting a lookup in a lookup thread would give the URL for any thread on the board related to the lookup request.

But then we'd be in the utopian world where people using the internet know what a URL is and know what to do with it ... or where this barbaric site allowed the use of html in posts ...

I am raising the question for two reasons. First it was something which was brought up on a thread which is now demolished. Secondly the first fact only emphasises the need for some method of conveying these hints and tips to board users.

This is only one of a multitude of excellent pieces of information which have to be constantly nudged up the boards so that new researchers may have the benefit of hindsight.

I would rather these hints be stickied at the top of a thread. GR obviously have other ideas about what is important. I do not mean that disrespectfully, it is just noticeable.

AuntieS

I dislike the stuff!!

............. I loved it then, possibly because I knew it was a "treat"!

as regards your question, I don't think there is any real answer.

I find one of the most valuable reasons for posting your own thread instead of asking on a look-up thread, is that you can get several people working together, and there can be the most incredible results when you have 3 or 4 minds tackling an ancestor who wants to remain hidden!

I have a question for JC. This is a research process query.

I re-read some info you sent me and would like you to clarify a detail. It is important because it is connected to how I sometimes access help.

Your discussion was about Look Up threads on the boards.

I comprehend what you are saying about having a thread and then asking a connected question on a look up thread. There are then two streams of info not connected.

I do that in one particular instance. This is where I use Kerri for South Australian lookups. Not only have I done it with my research I have also done it where someone else needed her paticular expertise.

On one occasion I posted the person's thread link on Kerri's thread and on the other I gave Kerri the thread name.

For my own research I've had a look back on Kerri's thread to see where I have asked for help. I don't think I have ever had a thread relevant to a lookup. Kerri's replies are usually messaged to the enquirer and therefore are only very seldom placed on the thread.

I am seeing several different ways of using the "look up" offers. I understand the point where, if you have a thread and then choof off and ask the same question on a look up thread, never the twain shall meet. Yes I would be cranky at wasting my wastable time when someone else was also wasting their time.

So is there a process which could be recommended to iron out these crinkles. How do you see the valuable assistance given by those who provide specific lookups dovetailing with a separate thread on the same subject.

And no I'm not anticipating the multitude will follow the suggestion. However, there might possibly be eleventeen or so who will try to make the workload easier for the volunteers.

And like most newcomers to this world I have never before given the matter any thought.
