Lucky I saw there was a page 5 -- I was just about to say ...

Okay, who did you steal that from?

;)

That's a lovely keepsake and reminder of your OH's uncle, Ladykira

Oh isn't that the Games where there was a blood bath in the pool?

.................... Russians vs Hungarians (or was it the Czechs) I believe

The Russians had invaded the other country some months previously ....

Sylvia, you are so much more gracious than I.

Interesting about those Olympics, didn't know that.

Of course, in 1956 I hadn't started school yet, although we had just got television I think.

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 5 Feb 2010 22:15

Well I did not arrive until after it as all over.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Feb 2010 22:17

oh yes, Janey

I was in high school ....... and I remember talk about what would happen if those two teams ended up having to play together.

The Russians lost the battle, but I can't remember who won the game!

Interestingly enough, I went to Austria on a school ski trip at Christmas 1956. We had to spend a long time (several horus) on the Munich train station waiting for our train which was coming throuhg that country ............. and continuing unrest had delayed it.

Was it something I said?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Feb 2010 22:22

Did anything happen the year I was born? Oh yeah, the Queen became Queen. Well, not officially until the next year.

I remember when I was little asking how come she got married first and didn't become Queen until a good bit later.

Surely the way to become a queen was to get married ...

And Sherlock claims to be a thread killer.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Feb 2010 22:24

You'll have to wait for that answer LadyKira!

In my case, it is soon going to be something my tummy says. It's fixing to put out a mighty growl, and most nights I ignore it until TV prime time at least. But today is Friday and I am unchained from sitting at the keyboard waiting for the last-minute weekend job that usually arrives but doesn't these days becuase we have no working government so I have no government work ...

My Mum was a bellringer at Woolwich and her picture was in the paper because she greeted the new queen as she came up the River Thames.Rumour has it that Greenwich will be given the new status of Royal Greenwich.

In that case I have just 2 words for you Janey to help you out of your boredom through lack of work.....:),

Beynon.

Talk.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 5 Feb 2010 22:50

I can run but I can't hide.

Okay. When *is* the talk?

Notice how I studiously avoid "Beynon" ... You're on the wrong board!!!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 6 Feb 2010 05:24

Louis Riel is not being taped by CBC ................. they are busy elsewhere

It is being taped as usual by someone connected with the program, and OH will be buying one of those DVDs to add to his library

sylvia

errrrrrrrrr......................................... one of the Headmasters of the Grammar School I went to was called Beynon

He was, I believe, of Welsh origin

He left the school in ca 1955 to go overseas ...... as a missionary??????????

Nah ............... there can't be any connection!

Well now where do I start.

First and foremost you lot will be bowing to me from now on. It is quite obvious that I am the matriarch of this little group. The elderly citizen, the grandma of you all.

What do I remember about 1956. We moved from Darwin to Perth and I was enrolled in an all girls high school for the first time.

If that was the year of the Hungarian uprising I also sang Sibelius Finlandia in a massed choir as part of support for Hungary. Always wondered why we sang a Finnish song in support of a Hungarian revolt.

The most memorable part of that performance was tipping melting wax from our candles onto our arms and hands while we were waiting for the incredibly long instrumental introduction before we arrived at the singing bit.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 6 Feb 2010 06:12

deliberately???

I think we might be in competition for being matriarch!
