Sharron

Sharron Report 3 Feb 2010 11:16

I think you misunderstand me.I know where to buy it,I just want to know what it tastes like before I part with fourpence.

Being addicted to all things sour I put a drop of cider vinegar in lemonade and also drink it diluted like squash, wierdo! Have never thought to put it in cooking.

Have to be careful as I am feeding he of the ninety long winters and it could be foreign muck.

Sharron, I have one who is of the 88 long winters, he is an authority on 'foreign muck', and he has never eaten any, to the best of my knowledge.
He likes tomatoes, cheese and onion, being a vegetarian, and when I suggested he tried a pizza, he went a funny colour, and I thought he was going to write me out the will. LOLOL

I'm vegetarian so he has to eat vegetarian or go without unless he or OH is cooking.
As I grew up on British stodge that is what I make usually and you can't really tell the difference with Quorn so we have cottage pie and rasher pudding and the stew has Quorn in it. Egg and rasher pie is veggi too.

I'm really just learning my way around herbs and spices and am a bit cautious with them because I don't want to spoil a whole dish with my experimenting and I could so easily turn it foreign!

Anne the dried leaf keeps its flavour a long time and is a bit stronger than fresh,as i have loads of it i keep it in a large screw top jam jar.much easier to get at.

sharron chinese five spice has a mixed taste ,i can only describe it as mixed spice that you put in fruit cake but no so sweet, erring on the curry side.
hope this helps.

Julia Report 9 Feb 2010 15:34

There was some lovely marmalade recipes in the Country Living, magazine, this time last year, which I have kept. I keep wanting to make some, but OH doesn't eat if very often, so it would be a waste.

Sounds nice Julia, do you fry or grill the steak, and what are potato fritters?

We have a piece of brisket cooking in the slow cooker, will have to put the oven on though to do the roast pots etc.

Julia

Julia Report 21 Feb 2010 15:11

Hello Ann, the way I cook my steak rather depends on what else I am cooking. For instance, I will have to have the oven on for the potato fritters, so will utilise the oven space, and cook the steak in there.
Now Potato Fritters. I think these are called a different thing in different parts of the country. They are basically a slice of part cooked potato, coated in batter. You warm them up on a tray in the oven. You can buy them in most supermarkets in the veggie section.
When we were younger, there was a chip shop in our 'village' who sold these straight from the chip frier. A few of these, a loaf of buttered bread, and carton of mushy peas made a filling, and chea meal.
Brisket cooked in the slow cooker sounds very good, and should cook well. Please enjoy.

Thanks Julia, I usual 'grill' my steak in the oven on a rack. Not heard of potato fritters but they sound delicious. Like chips in batter.
