Gammon will work a treat. I put some water in as it can be a bit salt otherwise, but you dont need as much, and no topping up. I would heat the water first. About three hrs on the fast cook, but about double on the slowest setting.

I use mine - but not so much in Summer which it is here Ann.

I will have a look at gammon for you Mummo and see what I can come up with.

I don't usually brown my food first - perhaps too lazy but given long enough starting on high and then reducing to low - I have never had problems. I was a bit worried once when I did a scone/dumpling mixture on top of my stew that I had left it too late but no they rose up a treat and were scrumptious - that was our carb part of the meal and I stick herbs and chives in the scone mixture.

Hello Ann in Glos-yes I did thanks and it looks great, more or less did as helly2wellynz suggested. I have put it in the freezer for when the family come over, it made such a lot!! Also, I cooked the pheasant it was all a bit rich, felt like Christmas menus all over again!! I am cooking venison sausages with veg for tomorrow nights supper as working late, trying them in the slow cooker too, so will see how that turns out.
Apologies for not replying sooner computer playing up and probs with this site this evening!!

Old bean did you cook your venison?

oldbean

oldbean Report 20 Feb 2010 10:11

Thank you helly2wellynz how lovely to get message from you and so far away! That sounds my kind of recipe more rustic than fancy, I am sure i can get a mix similar to yours otherwise I may just throw in the wine!!
I was lucky to get the venison -not the first time to have eaten it although it was diced then- a friends son is a game keeper and I was also given a couple of pheasant, they have been frozen so I need to cook them too this weekend. Talk about dining in fine style!!
Please tell other half we have eaten wild boar (farmed) and it was delicious, have had that a few times. Not tried the goat tho' never seen it adverised. Who knows may do one day. Thanks again, off to get the ingredients.

Hi Oldbean, Lucky you to be given venison :-). My OH has cooked deer necks in the slow cooker. He cooked them with onion, whole garlic cloves, button mushrooms and a Maggie Cook in the Pot Beef Bourguinon recipe mix. (Not sure if they are just a NZ thing). They were cooked on low for about 8 hours. It was yummy and very tender. Jazz (the dog) looked disappointed that she only got the neck bones. We tend to be very experimental when it comes to the slow cooker, just throw everything in a hope for the best. OH said to mention we have also slow cooked goat, and we are soon to try wild pork.

Hello again
I hope I havn't missed a recipe on here but I have been given a joint of venison. Has anyone tried it done in the slow cooker and if so is it a good idea and some tips please? I have cooked venison diced as in beef in red wine but would be keen to have others opinions please.

I brought some lamb bits the other day, (the left over bits that the butcher cant make chops etc out of) they still have quite a bit of meat on them (and a bit of fat too :-) ). They are about 2 inches thick and about 5 inches long, not sure what you would call them in the UK (Must ask mum). I have thrown them in the slow cooker with a sachet of sage and onion gravey mix, and a couple of oxo cubes. I have no idea if this combo of flavours is going to work, will just have to wait and see. :-)

Yes you are right, it is a thread. I am pleased that people keep adding. I have copied off a lot of the recipes.

Ann-So pleased that people keep adding to this (thread) I hope that is what you call it. So homely and comforting when all else is cold and miserable outside. Nothing like food and cooking to cheer is there? Also it gives me inspiration what to cook for us when other people add to it too. I'm loving cooking with my slow cooker and recommending one to all my family and friends.

Lol!!!
I can add to that. The other night OH came up to bed and said, 'it's OK I have switched the slow cooker off' I had taken the dish out and put it in the dishwasher but left the base on!!!!

Hi, thought you'd like to read this : My Nephews wife (they live in the U.S.A.) wrote this on her facebook page today............

Yesterday morning l put some pork chops, olive oil, spices and broth in the crock pot so we'd come home to a delicious dinner. This morning l'm going to do the same, except l may actually PLUG IN the crock pot this time, it may work better.
Warning to us all, lol
