Ann, don't read it through this evening, it will still be fresh. It's first draft, leave it for a day or two, or longer, until you can view it with fresh eyes.

I have started a story, done one chapter (about 2000 words) I'll read it through again later this evening and see whether I think it good enough to send out. Not sure about it yet.

TeresaW

TeresaW Report 20 Jan 2010 16:28

I read it somewhere, I'll find it eventually and put it here. Thing is, I've read so much lately I can't remember where I read it. I have a feeling it's in my course literature.

So true, and very good advice, Teresa and I have been spending a fruitless 20 minutes Googling for that poet! lol XX

Please don't think that just because someone managed to write a good piece of prose, that the words just fell onto the paper. It isn't easy to write good prose, you have to resist the temptation to fall into cliches, or to use something exactly as you've read it before, just because it fits perfectly. It sometimes takes a lot of thought, frustration, editing, re-writing, throwing away, cutting and deleting before the final piece is there.

That's what stopped me writing for so many years. Whenever I read something good, I would feel intimidated, thinking 'Oh I could never write something like that.' But I didn't realise the poor author has put themselves through hours, weeks, sometimes months of torture trying to get it just right. One poet, I forget who, added a comma, and took all day to do it, only to take it out again the next day.

Aww Ann please don't think that! We are not out to get the Booker Prize (well I'm not:-) but everyones writing is important and I am thoroughly enjoying reading all the different styles and ideas! XX BC

Thank you all for the lovely comments but please don't sell yourselves short. Some of you can write prose so well and that is something I find quite difficult. I admire anyone who can write a piece of prose which makes perfect sense....that's talent lol!

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 19 Jan 2010 20:41

I have sent out another short piece of prose. No hurry to read and comment though.
