Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 5 Dec 2009 12:40

Jean would be interested in this thread - she had this done about 3 years ago. I remember how pleased she was with the way she looked, not just the teeth themselves but the shape of her face changed.
I should really bit the bullet for my top set, I've only got 9 - one is giving me lots of jip, another (one of the front ones grrr) is wandering across the next tooth and looks horrid. It would be lovely to eat properly again but like you I'm terrified of the dentist having had so much trouble in the past.
I hate to say it but I think most of us with horrid teeth are smokers or ex smokers - it does cause your gums to recede :-((

OH I'm not worried about nuts, I don't eat them anyway....well, not walnuts, brazils hazels and so on that get left lying around at Christmas LOL.

I do eat pistachios and cashews though.....well i did until about a year ago lol.

I used to make my own granola, so I can look forward to that again.

Crusty bread! Wow, not been able to eat that for about three years now, unless it's a day old so I can gnaw through it with a couple of side teeth LOL.

What a mess eh?

TW - they aren't crow's feet; they are laughter lines LOL

Will you be able to each crunchy food?

Yes, with a bit of practice. I didn't trust my new 'teeth' to begin with. Now I eat celery, apples and granola cereals and crusty bread.

Whole nuts (except peanuts) are a something else. They just roll around my mouth while I try and crunch them up. Oh, well, they're fattening, anyway.

Like others have said, you have absolutely nothing to fear. My dentist is a dour Scotsman but if the treatment is a bit uncomfortable he is kindness itself, Bless him.

Well, it's just me top set, but I honestly have no problem........

Like you, I'm terrified of dentists and the time is approaching when the bottom set'll have to go too, but...........

Believe me (after a while) , it'll be fine.

Winter Drawers Ever Near Report 4 Dec 2009 23:00

Ladies,

You are making me feel a little bit more brave with all your encouragement to TW.

I used to have such a lovely smile until I hit 50 and everything fell apart (there wasn't much there in the first place to miss)! Then the teeth started falling out.

I am quite outgoing but find myself putting my hand over my mouth to try and disguise the fact that teeth are missing. Only makes people look more at your mouth!

My 90 year old peeps have started hiding their dentures from me in case I pinch them!

I'll pluck up the courage in the New Year and go to the dentist. He is only 8 doors away from me. If he mucks up I'll start extracting his wheels and headlights from his flash car which he parks every morning outside my house!

Let me know how you get on TW and I'll bite the bullet!

Good luck.

OHhhh Alice, that was going to be my next question. I love crunch cereals, and granolas, but I just can't eat them any more. Would I be able to with new teef?

Ooooo I hope so, not everything I CAN eat is particularly healthy lol

Me again Teresa

Nowt to be frightened about - it's such a relief after the initial adjusting. If they fit well, no need for fixative - I can crunch anything (lol)!

Hi Teresa
dentures are really easy to look after.

Cleaning:
brush dentures after eating with a medium soft nylon toothbrush. oral B 30/35 is a good size. use something like dentu-creme paste which is designed for dentures. normal toothpaste is too abrasive. brush them over a sink full of water - this way, if you accidentally drop them, they won't crash and break in the sink.

leave them in a glass of water overnight. regularly soak them in a denture cleaner. this will prevent thrush or similar from developing.

never clean or soak in hot water as this will bleach the plastic.

You might not need to use a fixative, but if you do, most people seem to like the poligrip paste or super wernets powder. I haven't seen anyone yet that has got on with the strips.
Ask your dentist for samples - we get given loads of them by the reps.

If you get any sore spots, then keep going back for adjustments. The dentist won't mind how often you have to. Wear the dentures for at least two hours before seeing the dentist, then he can see where the soreness is.

After a few months, the dentures may feel looser and need the fitting surface relined.

It is a good idea to go back for check-ups at least yearly. This is so that the dentist can make sure your soft tissues are heatlhy.

Hope that all makes ssense.

Good luck

Aileen, of course you'd get it on the NHS, I'm only 50....age has little or nothing to do with it hun.

Come on, if I can do it, you can do it, and we can both have nice confident smiles again.

Marilyn, it could have been next week, but they couldn't fit me in, it'll be January 8th.

Winter Drawers Ever Near

Winter Drawers Ever Near Report 4 Dec 2009 21:56

Hi TW,

Oh you are very brave. I have suffered agony and let my loose teeth fall out with a little bit of assistance from me. Went through jars of ground cloves to dull the pain. I am terrified of the dentist. I've got 16 and a bit teeth left.

I have two front bottom teeth missing and one of my top front teeth is beginning to wobble as are a few others. They really all need to come out.

I don't know if I would get it on the NHS as I am still in my 50s. The thought of paying thousands of pounds out to go private fills me with dread.

I'll end up looking like a real old witch if any more fall out!

₪ TeresaW elite empress of deleted threads&# Report 4 Dec 2009 21:44

Marilyn, it would be drastic if I had a mouthful of healthy teeth, but over the years I've had some removed anyway, two broke, and one fell out on it's own. The front ones are so loose I can't bite. The gums, through years and years of problems are now receded so badly there's nothing much left to hold the teeth in, roots are exposed on some of them, and there are only about three teeth stable enough to enable me to chew properly.

Believe me, it's the least drastic course of action. besides, I've only got 16 left LOL

No need for second opinion, any dentist worth his salt would say the same as mine. I knew that before I went there this morning.

Besides, they are not all coming out at once, top set first, then once that has settled, the bottom set will go.

GRMarilyn Report 4 Dec 2009 21:37

Oh Teresa,

That's a bit drastic to have them all out ...!!

I think I would get a second opinion........

I know most off us have loose teeth but for a dentist to say have em all out is a No No ......

Go see another one ....only my advice ...x

Wildgoose Report 4 Dec 2009 21:34

TW - I have dentures top and bottom. They are great; no more loose teeth, no more aches (I had gum disease for years).

The dentists, over the years, had tried to patch up my teeth and it would be OK for a while but then the soreness and pain would be back. Gum disease ruined two of my holidays.

If your dentist does a good job then you shouldn't need fixative. My teeth (that's what I call them, not my dentures!) fit better than my real ones ever did.

BTW - I once had a partial denture to fill a small gap at the side (I'm a bit vain!) and the darned thing wouldn't stay in so I had to use fixative and it was awful stuff.
