Dear Mummo

I am so pleased that you husband has made some progress.

I am hoping and praying that he continues to do so.

When this is all over and he is back home where he belongs, you will both be able to laugh and say 'well, that was a Christmas we'll never forget'.

You may have trouble getting him to do any decorating in the future, though. :-)

Sorry l'm so frustrated and angry tonight and thats made me sit here crying like a baby !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When l went to see Eddie this afternoon they have put him in a single room and it stunk of sh** , just before he left ICU they started using a device that goes up the backside and empties into a bag just like a catherter , well poor Ed has the runs as well and when l mention it they said they had no more bags to change it and they pressed the wrong nozzel and it went all over the floor, they just used the wipes that they use on Ed and some tissues to wipe it up, urrrr. then l said he was in pain from his backside and they said they would roll him and sort it out, well 45 minutes later 4 nurses turned up and when l asked why there was only 4 not 5 they said they didn't have to hold his head , when l said they always used someone at his head in ICU the staff nurse ripped off her apron and said she would look at his notes as she was told they didn't have to hold the head, well 15 minutes later in came 5 nurse and this staff nurse said she couldn't find out till tomorrow so they would use 5 till they found out. When they left l went to put Ed's shaving foam in his toilet bag and what did l find next to it the bags for the backside catherter, l went and found a nurse to tell her and time l left 2 hours after l let her know they still hadn't change the bag and l was heaving.
Then when he's tea arrive l usually feed him so l asked staff nurse if she could lift the bed a bit so he could eat his tea and she said no the bed was at 30%, when l said they usually put it at 50% when feeding him she told me in uncertain terms that she would do it her way and not the way that ICU did it, well l told her she could feed Ed as he would end up choking and l said l was leaving, when l got home l phoned Ed as he now has the television (£2.90 a day to watch) and the phone (39p a minute to ring him direct) at his bedside and he wasn't amused with her also and said he hardly ate anything as he couldn't swallow it, what makes it worse is that he has a limit opening in his mouth so that can cause problems also, anyway at least l could say good night to him properly.
They also didn't put him in his brace today, it was in the room when l got there but they aren't going to do it till Thursday now, no explaination given.
God how am l going to get through the next few weeks , l was told also today that he won't be home for Christmas.
Sorry just hope that when l visit him tomorrow that blasted staff nurse has gone elsewhere, think l will go and pour myself a drink, xx

Mummo, I am just too angry to type.... ((((((((hugs)))))))) for you both... and I think maybe you need another appointment to speak with the doctor and the senior ward nurse, ward manager, whatever they call themselves these days... no way should Eddie have been left like that, nor should his care plan have changed... and his transfer plan will definitely be 5 nurses at least until he has his brace on..... and probably even then for a little while.....

She hasn't read his care plan properly, I bet... or his care plan has been written in a slipshod way. Do you read his notes? As long as he gives his permission, I think you can... then you would know yourself what changes have been made.

Mummo so sorry to read that what should be going better has slipped back due to changes beyond your and Eddies control. Why is there no continuity of care?
At least you can talk directly to him now. And he can watch a little TV.

Would he be allowed a mobile in there? That might be a cheaper option for you and you wouldn't be watching pennies as those calls are expensive.

Dreadful, absolutely dreadful. There are many here will have such good advice for you, they were all here for me when my brother suffered abuse. How I had hoped times might have changed, I so feel for you both, truly I do.

Can you see the Consultant who drew up the Care Plan? So agree with Daff.

Oh Mummo, so sorry to hear that, is there not a ward manager you can speak to? I would go ballistic but you can leave the hospital poor Eddie has to stay.

As you say they should not be changing his care plan without consulting his specialist, i do hope you get something sorted out soon as its such a worry for you, and you have more than enough to worry about.

You pout yourself a stiff drink, you earned it by keeping your hands from going round staff nurse's throat. lol

The first thing to do is discuss Eddie's care plan with his Doctor,if the Doctor isn't about I'd go back to the ICU and ask them if they could clarify things,
I would also take a note book with me to keep notes of what you've been told for future reference and also keep notes of whats happening on the new ward , Id also keep a camera handy you never know it might come in handy !!

I hope things drastically improve with Eddie's care tomorrow,really feel for you both.

Mummo, how frustrating for you and Eddie after the good care he has had from ICU. You have had a lot of good advice here, do try and have words with his doctor, ask about the angle of the bed for eating, don't let them intimidate you and if the bag leaks they should properly clean the floor to avoid infection. You could also try to speak to whatever they call the person who replaced matron these days. And, I agree, a camera is an excellent idea. I realise that the nurses are probably overworked but they should not be dismissive of what you are telling them when you have spent all the time with Eddie and know what his treatment involved.
