I actually think the visiting, while costly and energy sapping, is good for Joyce in a way. She can't chat to people in English except on the phone (and of course with Jan and some of the family) because her Dutch isn't good so to get over to England and stay with her very good friend and see her family means she can natter away as we are used to doing ourselves, but have a proper conversation and a laugh or moan if she wants.

My friend in Germany speaks good German and her husband and daughter speak English as well as German, but she has told me in the past that sometimes she goes in her car and switches on the English version of Satnav just to hear English spoken. I can understand it in a way as when I spent time with my son's dad's family, his Nanna can't speak more than the odd word of English - many older Maltese people don't speak English altho they can understand it - you can't sit and have a laugh and a joke with her or ask her anything without the aunt having to be there to translate and then the conversation loses fluency and some meaning.

That's why Joyce natters away when she talks to us on the phone, it's all been bottled up and has to come out in a chat with us.

Hi Joyce and Jan,
Thank you for the update Jan--though sorry to hear that Joyce won't be renewing her membership in January, we shall all miss her, but as long as you are able to rest Joyce to get better, that's what matters. It's nice to know that you are resting and looking after yourself.

Jan you take care of yourself too, hope you'll feel better soon.

Thinking of you both.

Love and best wishes, Sallie.xx

By January, Joyce will have had a rethink I am sure, and might renew then. At the mo it all seems too much but maybe by then the news will start getting better and her health problems, and her son's, will be sorted out and she can start again, keeping us all in order lol

Hope you feel better soon Jan and that between you and your Mum you can get some rest as well as Joyce resting.

Thats a real shame, but if staying off the computer will help her to rest we must grin and bear it. Maybe she could stay on if she promises to be good.

Sorry to hear this about Dutch.... but surely she could have this treatment in Holland, having been to Holland many times i find that most places speak good English ie shops hotels etc so surely there must be doctors in the hospital who speak English.
I would be really amazed if there isn't .

Thank you Jan for the update on Dutch, I hope she is feeling better this morning, and that she has had a good sleep. I do wish she would stop worrying about other people as she has enough problems of her own, you do right to keep her away from computer for a while.
She has a heart of gold but enough is enough and she needs to think of herself now.

Love to you both

Thanks Jan - hope you aren't feeling too bad with your cold/flu and will be able to keep Joyce in order lol We have told her till we are blue in the face to rest and get herself right so let's hope the blood tests show what she needs to get better as well the other checkups etc.
I have told her to stop eating the wrong things for diabetics as I am now having to look at everything my o.h. has as he has just been diagnosed with it too. Then she might feel better and able to cope with things.

take care, both of you

love

Thank you all for your kind thoughts for Dutch my wife i have to say shes not very well at all,i take her to the docter and tell him what she says and the other way round,i think because her son is sick thats her reason for getting seen to over there.Ive told her she needs to rest and think about herself like i and her friends on here have been telling her all along, she dos,nt like letting her friends down but she wont be of any use if something happends to her,but could i just ask would you keep the thread nudged up for y/caz so caz can see it when shes well enough.Dutch wont be on for while as most of you no if she sees someone who needs help shes there, but ibve told her its time to get yourself right,so i wish you all agood weekend, and thank you all for being there for her
best wishes Jan

Would it be possible for her to contact the British Embassy for help with translation? It might be an idea., and save her the travelling.

Carole Report 6 Nov 2009 11:30

Part of the problem is Jan has to take time off work to go to appointments with Joyce, as she speaks little Dutch. Here she can talk to the Dr herself, and understand them with no translator!

She does get help at the airports, and uses a wheelchair. But traveling when unwell isn't pleasant is it.

Will next call her Sunday

Hello Carole....thanks for the update, l bet poor Dutch is worrying herself sick, plus her son not being well. Please give her my love when you next speak to her.....and tell her to please rest.

Will she be coming back soon, all the travelling can't do her much good. Can't the Dutch hospital do anything, like have the xrays sent to them, mind you with the postal situation etc they might get lost!!

Take care
