Winter Drawers Ever Near Report 23 Aug 2009 22:59

Well the porridge I was leaving until last.

None of this Quakers stuff for me. Brought up on good old Scots Porridge Oats.

Freezing cold milk, non lumpy porridge and salt.

Quite uncanny but one of my daughters has always taken her porridge the way my grandad did and he passed away many years ago.

Porridge in one bowl, milk in another. Spoonful of porridge dipped in the milk. Me, in goes the porridge and freezing cold milk poured on top.

Roll on winter. It's my insulation. Sticks to my bones so I don't need to wear thermals!

You are making me feel homesick now Wenders.

I'm not going up to Scotland until next Spring with the grandkids to see my family.

I must admit the air is cleaner and the water softer. Makes the most marvellous cup of tea. I drink gallons of the stuff. Big floury morning rolls, square sliced sausage and fruit pudding, scotch pies and Mother's Pride Plain Bread...... yummy.

I don't hanker after them so much now as my butcher has all his supplies sent from Scotland and gets it all for me. Only trouble is my family and friends down here in Surrey keep nicking it all.

Hi Wendy

I wrote a long reply but then got the dread "connection problems" message, so here goes again...

I spent a week doing Oban, ferry to Mull and then over to Iona on an even-smaller ferry, and loved it. You may or may not be religious, but I challenge anyone not to feel in touch with their spiritual side whilst on this beautiful island

Ian and I also had a week based in Fort William. I wouldn't describe the weather as "gentle" but to be honest, it didn't make a load of difference. The driive up there was nothing short of spectacular - over Glencoe etc, and from there you can go up the Caledonian Canal, past all the Lochs - including, of course, Loch Lomond - and spend a bit of time in Inverness.

I really hope you enjoy your break - and a suggestion. Why not drive back down the Northumberland coast, stop off at Bamburgh and visit Lindisfarne (Iona connection of course) and then, if you've a day or two to spare, come and see the hidden treasures we have here in County Durham.

Enjoy!

Sue xd

Fife has lots of museums and places of interest and there is always St Andrews. Go to the hotel for afternoon tea and have it served from a silver teapot.

There are also the islands like Bute and Arran which are lovely. You can take a boat trip from Oban on the Waverley. You can go to one island or take a trip round them all.

There is always the Scottish Tourist Board who are really helpful.

Let us know where you finally decide on going to.

Hi,

If you google Historic Scotland there are quite a few websites which will give you events taking place in different parts of Scotland.

Edinburgh and Stirling Castles are very popular and The Wallace Monument in Stirling is very interesting. The Black Watch Museum is in Perth.

There are also quite a few whisky distilleries that do tours and you get a tipple too.
