That is brilliant Tec, I am so pleased you managed to post, even if it took so long. I will copy it over for you onto the Welsh thread

I managed to stay up for six hours today, which was better than yesterday when I didn't make it at all.

We had an invite out for New Years Eve, but had to turn it down, I will try to stay awake to see the fireworks on TV, but I may not make it :-(

I am glad it arrived Sue, I haven't actually seen it, the tourist office have a new on line venture where you can order on line and pay by PayPal, we are so forward looking here you know :-D

Hello :-D

Firstly I want to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR, with lots of good luck, and good health in 2016 :-)

The last few months have been difficult since the stroke. My brain and my typing hand conspired against me. Many times I have started to post only to give up in frustration when my writing made no sense :-(.

Things are improving greatly. My speech is nearly normal, and I can write a paragraph at a time and go back to it later.

I have been following the posts lately, and have really missed joining the goings on.
Thank you for the messages you sent me, and I greatly appreciate Linda keeping everyone up to date.

Well I must finish this before I run out of steam - it has taken me over an hour to get this far. :-D

Good Luck to you all <3

Tec :-)

Oh what a worry your are Huia - please take care because we worry.

Coughs still hanging on? That's a concern too and you Sylvia ??

Someone sent me a calendar - it made us "homesick" :-(

My very best wishes for a wonderful 2016 to all my dear friends <3 <3

The problem is with being away, we don't have much fresh stuff in. My brother is going to come down for a meal in the next few days, but he hasn't rung me back yet to let me know when. I will need to have enough stuff in to rustle something up

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Dec 2015 20:33

ah but .......... that's only if you eat massive amounts of it.

Our health people have told us that "normal" amounts of bacon once or twice a week do no harm :-D

In fact, I've just had a bacon buttie for my lunch :-D

Deli meats can be another problem .............. if you buy smoked meats etc from reliable sources who have done the curing "as was" and you should be safe, but the el cheapo deli meats that are treated with lots of chemicals to simulate the real stuff, no no no

We had rotten weather over Christmas, except for Christmas Day itself ............ though not as bad as you guys.

Now we have a cold front over us for the next several days, well into next week. It's sunny, blue skies, and cold!

We have loads of food in ....... and our food stores don't actually close so we really don't have to do big buy-ins

OH just got the ham shank out of the freezer, we'll have that for dinner tomorrow

Keep as dry as you can!

LindainHerriotCountry Report 30 Dec 2015 20:20

I like bacon as well, pity it is now on the list of things which are not good for us :-(

It is horrible here, raining all the time. OH is going for a walk tomorrow and taking the car, so I will have to walk into the square to buy some food for the next couple of days

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Dec 2015 19:47

pretty good!!

Her mind is still very sharp, and so is her sense of humour!

Getting some food and water into her helped, as did good pain control ............ she won't take as much medication as she should so she still has some pain, but she hated having a clouded mind. She now can't walk more than 2 or 3 steps, but I'm not sure whether that is due to weakness or the cancer

The prognosis is not good, about 2 months so far as we can gather ............... of course, we only know what she tells us as none of us can be privy to consultations with the doctors. They are looking at releasing her to a nearby full care home for a period of time, as she doesn't need as much care as is given in Palliative. It would only be for a few weeks maximum.

We'll be going back for 2 or 3 days in about 3 weeks.

The funniest with her was when we went back after lunch on Christmas Day ............ not many places were open so we'd had a little search for food, but finally found one, and I had a BLT. When told, she licked her lips and said how much she missed bacon.

This lady is Jewish, but non-practising!!!

Next morning, I got a side of bacon (4 slices) to go from the hotel, and handed it to her. The smile on her face was fantastic!!

She doesn't eat much at any one time, so she still had the little package on her table that afternoon ............. she likes cold bacon as much as when it is hot

I was very careful what and how much I ate at the Christmas Buffet ...... I loved the maple glazed ham and cedar planked sockeye salmon. The salmon was especially tasty, so much so that I sneaked a piece off OH's plate that he was going to leave :-D

How is your friend doing?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Dec 2015 19:24

Hi Linda

yes, more or less!!

It's amazing how hard it can be to eat "bland" food when eating out all the time. I had fish and chips 3 times in 3 days (2 halibut and 1 cod)........... probably the blandest on the menus, but luckily none of them were greasy. In fact, they were delicious, especially the halibut :-D

glad to hear that Tec is OK, even if he still has the cough

I'm sorry to hear that you both have that terrible cough

We can call off the search party as Tec phoned me. He hadn't been near the phone when I called and stupidly I hadn't left a message. He only realised when he read my last post on the thread.

He has just finished his second lot of antibiotics, but still has a really bad cough, I think we could start up our own coughing choir. Anyway he is safe, if not well

He says he will try and gird his typing finger to post a message

I hope your sorting is coming on well Huia

I have a terrible chest infection, I have just finished my third lot of antibiotics, but they haven't sorted it,so I will just wait and see what happens for a few days

I spoke to Tec just before I went away, I have tried twice since I came back, but haven't had a reply . He had a chest infection as well, so Iwo serif he is ill. I have sent an email to his daughter, so I will have to wait until she replies

Thank you for your card Sue, it arrived today

Persie, I dont need you coming all that way to help me. I am falling over offers of help. There are plenty of locals who I could phone as well. But thanks for the offer anyway.

Of course, I might decide to postpone my 80th birthday if I feel I am overdoing things!

Well for someone who has had a stroke, you have done an excellent job of writing that monologue.

I was just thinking I have a big tax bill coming up, due 15 Jan. The trouble is it is the same amount for him as well as me and the bank balance is going to take a big hit. It will pay for an incredible amount of taxi rides.

If you need me to come up and give you a hand let me know.

I am glad to see you Huia, it sounds as if you have been very lucky, if you can call having a stroke that.

I hope that you do get into town soon, I know leaving your home will be difficult for you, but now is the time when you need to be near all e facilities

Huia

Huia Report 29 Dec 2015 08:54

Hello everybody. Thank you for your concern. I had decided this year I was going to have Christmas on my own so I could do what I wanted when I wanted. eat what I wanted (not too much!) and so on. I must have had a premonition. I dont know when the stroke happened. I had a fairly bad headache for a couple of days and the usual panadol didnt shift it so I tried paracetamol plus codeine (a prescription I have) and they didnt shift it so decided not to keep taking tablets. Then I noticed that a book I was reading wasnt making sense, until I realised that I could see only half way across the page and was then going to the next line. That rang alarm bells for me. That night I packed a bag and next morning (boxing day) decided to see if my neighbour (2 km away) was going to town so I could get a lift. When she heard I thought I might have had a stroke she immediately said she would take me in to the weekend medical centre in Papakura. She went in with me to see the doc, who happened to be my usual doc doing a shift there. The doc did various tests including asking me to draw a clock face. I drew a perfect one which had her puzzled so she rang to ask the hospital if they wanted me. They said yes, so I was driven to the hospital by an undertaker! (or funeral director - my neighbour). Admittedly she wasnt driving the hearse, but how many people get delivered to hospital by an undertaker?

The hospital did a few tests and a CT scan which showed I had some bleeding on the brain at the back. My vision is almost back to normal but I have been banned from driving for a month at least. I have some more tablets to take to thin the blood. I passed the test for making a cuppa, plus an IQ test, so was sent home in a taxi ($160-40, which the hospital pays!)(or people like Persie helps to pay through taxes.)

Now I really MUST get rid of a lot of my junk in case I need to sell and move to town if my driving ban is not lifted in a month. One of the ladies from our shop is coming out on Friday at my request to help me go through my wardrobe and prune things down for a start. I had intended to get her to do it even before this happened. She has offered often enough to help me clear out my junk. My sister has also offered to come and stay for a couple of days to help. So if I dont get on here for some time you will know I have a slave-driver here cracking the whip or throwing things out while I try to rescue them.

My speech and limbs are unaffected by the stroke.
