Well it is very bleak with few trees and bushes up on the top where we are going,so there aren't many places to hide. Don't worry, Sylvia, Sue an I will look after you

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 11 Feb 2015 20:36

Dick Turpin was a pussycat compared to what's lurking behind the bushes these days :-D

LindainHerriotCountry Report 11 Feb 2015 20:33

We have teddy bears and pet dogs, I assume they are the Bears and wolves you are referring to

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 11 Feb 2015 20:31

We hung the highway man Dick Turpin at York

Tecwyn Report 11 Feb 2015 20:19

They all look quite interesting.

I shall get my map book of GB out of the car tomorrow, so that I can mark the route.

Should I become obnoxious and thrown off the bus, then at least I will know where I am.

I've heard strange stories about the North, not just the bears and wolves, but marauding tribes, and hiwaymen (how do you spell that?) I think it's too far South for the Reevers.

I can see why you are good at organising - this is taking on the look of a military campaign, and the invasion of Northern England. :-D

Hmm, today we are due to visit the third highest pub in England which at 1,500 ft, is the Traveller's Rest, nr Flash on A53 between Buxton and Leek (Derbyshire Tec)

It is only fourteen minutes drive from the last place, so not long in the bus today

Oddly it appears to have been turned into a strange theme pub as below
http://www.theknightstable.co.uk/
The Knights Table

Britain's 3rd highest pub has been transformed by new owners Carole Knight and Alan Stanway. The Knights Table at the Travellers Rest, situated on the A53 between Leek and Buxton on the Staffordshire Derbyshire border at Flash Bar, certainly lives up to it's new name. With a medieval knight's theme running throughout, a warm and welcoming atmosphere has been created for drinkers and diners alike.

It seems to have only two bedrooms for hire, so that could be cosy

Oh well, it has to be done

.For the next one, we need to go to the Lake District, but then we would have to come back again to the same stretch of road because numbers 5-8 are all on the same bit of road, so maybe we can do them together

1,470 ft, The New Inn, Flash, Staffordshire.
Being set in Flash, the highest village in England, The New Inn is the highest "village pub" in England and 5th highest inn overall (depending on who has the most accurate ruler!). The pub sells Real Ales from the Macclesfield Storm Brewery.

1,470 ft, Royal Cottage, on the A53 halfway between Leek and Buxton.
This is a tiny little pub on the side of the road

1,440 ft, The Mermaid, on the A53 near Leek, Staffordshire.
The Mermaid Inn sleeps 26-34 in 13 en suite bedrooms. It is no longer a pub as such but an upmarket self catering place, so maybe we could stay here while e look at the other pubs

1,440 ft, Winking Man, on the A53 halfway between Leek and Buxton (close to Royal Cottage).
http://winkingman.com/ They have a caravan site but no rooms for hire

Glad the meeting wasn't too bad, and I suppose they do have to tick boxes where hygiene and the public are concerned.

Sue next door had rigorous inspections with the B&B, but she did get a top rating of five on her certificate.

Poor hedgehog :-0 Maybe he died of old age.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 11 Feb 2015 18:38

The meeting was a hygiene training course, actually it wasn't too bad. They have to do it to tick the health and safety box

I asked OH if the hedgehog was hibernating, but he assured me it wasn't

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 11 Feb 2015 18:34

Maybe the hedgehog was hibernating, and not really dead. I disturbed a huge toad in
my garden the other day when I was moving some debris.
He wasn't amused.

I think it is really cold today, so have made a fire.

I wonder what goes on at a meals on wheels meeting? Hope it was interesting. :-D

LindainHerriotCountry Report 11 Feb 2015 14:38

Yuk. OH has been sawing a couple of branches off one of the trees. He gets rid of he smaller bits, but any thicker log like bits, he is using to make a wildlife stack in one corner where it is too shaded for much to grow

He jus t said that it is working "sort off" When I asked him what he meant, he sat there was a dead hedgehog in there :-(

I am off to drive someone to the hospital, I took someone else to the doctors yesterday, it is getting busy

Oh and I have a meeting about Meals on Wheels at 5pm, I bet that is riveting.

Tecwyn Report 10 Feb 2015 21:57

I am never grumpy - just exercising a little common sense,

It is not nice to be sniping at each other - you are supposed to be serene, and kind. :-)
