Hello Sylvia, :-)
Yes you can walk up there, and I did many times when Ianto was alive. He loved it up there. Now of course I would have to drive up there. Trouble is, there are metal gates to open and shut over the cattle grids, so now I need someone with me to jump in and out of the car to see to the gates. Last time I was up there was last summer when my sister and BIL visited. They thought it was wonderful, having never been anywhere like that. They are coming back this summer, and have asked to go there again.
Your OH fell out of his bed three times during the night, and on the third occasion he decided to stay on the floor :-D

The Miners Arms does look good, except for the Rooney No 10 shirt on the wall :-0 They do say they have a luxurious twin room upstairs with a stunning bathroom, so maybe Sue won't have to stay in the tent after all :-D
I also like bleak landscapes - ten minutes from where I live, up in the mountains there is the old drovers road. Way above the tree line, nothing grows except the heather, and the bracken. Not a soul in sight - wild, bleak, untouched. Leading eventually to a beautiful lake where in the silence of a summers day you can hear the plop of a fish as it leaps out of the water, and watch the swallows skimming the surface. Sometimes the silence is broken only by the cry of a circling buzzard, or red kite.
A million miles from humanity.................... :-)

I thought your post was very interesting Tec
We need to continue our tour, Next is The Miners Arms in Nenthead, only a ninety minutes’ drive from the Kirkstone Pass Inn
I love it up here, it is very bleak and that appeals to me
Www.nenthead.com
It looks very nice, with two renovated rooms in what was the old bunkhouse, plus a twin inside. Not enough for us all, but Sue is used to camping

I had a remarkably comfortable night in the Bunkhouse, heated by a wood burning stove. Hope you slept well in the four poster Linda. I have reservations about those things, in case it all came crashing down on me while I slept :-D.
While I have not ventured very far North, I have been to Blackpool, Lytham St. Anne's, and Southport. A brief visit to Leeds. Shopping expeditions into Liverpool and Manchester with the Duchess.
I am familiar with the whole of Wales, North, and South. Particularly like the Pembrokeshire and Gower coastline, but feel most at home here in Snowdonia.
Have fond memories of time spent along the South coast from Lands End in the West, to Margate in the East. The Dorset coast is beautiful I think.
Parts of the Kent and Essex coast are interesting, and of course the Thames Estuary, where my interest in shipping developed.
I did have a camping holiday in Guernsey in the Channel Islands with the Boy Scouts when I was fourteen.
As a boy, I knew London very well. We lived out in Essex, but from the age of ten I would frequently go by train, quite cheaply, into London on a Saturday, and in school holidays. I visited the museums and later the art galleries. Would spend hours in the Tower of London, which was mostly deserted in those days, and free. Got to know some of the Beefeater's by name, and they knew me. On my last visit to London, and passing the Tower, I was astonished to see a queue around the block, waiting to get in.
On one memorable occasion, aged ten, I was standing on a jetty protruding into the Thames waiting for the Royal Yacht Britannia to pass. I can't remember what the occasion was all about, but on deck and clearly visible, was King George and Queen Elizabeth, the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. Queen Mary, Earl Mountbatten, Viceroy of India. Winston Churchill and Mrs Churchill. The Royal Yacht was Dressed Overall, and a wonderful sight. What a pity I didn't have a camera, but boys didn't have cameras in those days.
Didn't intend to write a book. Started the post, and just kept going - sorry. Maybe I'm rambling - and it'll probably get worse.
:-(

Oops, I lost a day, of course Valentines day is tomorrow. Today is the second birthday of the little boy next door, so I have just taken his present round.
I have been in the cave at Cheddar Gorge as well. Rievaulx and Knaresborough are right on my doorstep Sylvia, so I have been lots of times over the years.

My parents used to love taking day trips on coaches (we didn't have a car :-( ) ....... so I have been to many many places across England.
Didn't venture into foreign lands though ................ so I didn't go to Wales until I was at uni
Cheddar Gorge is great
we often went into Yorkshire and the Lake District ...................... Mum and dad loved to go to the old abbeys such as Rievaulx Abbey, and great cathedrals like York.
...... and we even went to Knaresborough and to Old Mother Shipton's Cave once upon a time :-D

hope you are all sleeping in the various beds.
I'll try to make sure that OH doesn't make too much noise when we arrive :-)
Linda ................ Valentine's Day isn't until Saturday :-)
It's Friday the 13th
We have only ever exchanged cards ........ I've just had to get OH to take me to the store so I could buy mine for him. He very nicely stayed well away so that he couldn't see what I was choosing :-)
The Catholic Archbishop here has given a special dispensation for next Wednesday to all his Asian parishioners ...............
Wednesday February 18 is Ash Wednesday when all Catholics are supposed to fast and abstain from alcohol ...................
BUT this year, it is also the eve of Chinese New Year, which falls on Thursday February 19th .............. and Asians celebrate over at least 3 days with lots of food and drink.
so the Archbishop has been kind to them :-)
for us .................. it means that Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday, and I will make pancakes (English style as against N Am style), which we have traditionally had for our dinner that day :-D

In Tasmania there is an amazing gorge almost in the middle of Launceston. It's amazing as one minute you are Ina residential area and next you are in the gorge.

I've been to Cheddar Gorge Sue, and into the caves.
Brenda from Wales used to live near to where I am, now she lives on an area of the North Wales coast that I am familiar with.
Hope you get to meet up

It's one of my favourite places in England although there is much to choose from.
When we went to Somerset Linda's OH suggested we have a look at Cheddar Gorge. We did and it was amazing.
I forgot to mention that if all goes well I will be meeting up with Brenda from Wales. She is visiting family in Sydney and we are hoping to meet next week.
