It says about one in five people who have had Chickenpox will get shingles in their seventies

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Feb 2015 22:09

the sun is shining here, and it is warm again .............. 12C in the shade in my back garden

That's about double what it should be :-(

OH was out digging in the garden this morning ................. but not in the veggie garden

We have terrible problems with the European Cockchafer, which found its way into a neighbouring city about 5 years ago, and has since spread west into our city.

The larvae probably came in on the roots of some plants imported into a garden centre without being thoroughly cleaned of soil.

anyway, the raccoons, skunks and crows just love the larva ......... the raccoons and skunks roll up the grass, and the crows pull up clumps of grass to get at them.

Most gardens that are within range of light from street lights are in a terrible state.

There is no cure for them :-(

OH dug up a small patch on the front lawn, he's going to heavily lime it, then re-seed ...................... and our lawn mowing guy will lime everywhere else, and we'll gradually re-seed those areas.

Turfing is apparently no good ....................... keeping the lawns healthy, and grass about 1" high is about the only thing that can be done

Good idea to have the shingles jab Sylvia. It's a nasty condition. The Duchess had it a few years ago, all around her middle.

Our dear friend Berona had it about four years ago, and never did get free of the pain.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 21 Feb 2015 22:07

They have just introduced the Shingles vaccine here. You can only get it if you are 70, 78 or 79

They can't do everyone in their seventies as they wouldn't be able to cope, so pity the other. people. It is odd that it is a one off vaccine, but it is only effective for about five years

Yes, he spent 2½ years teaching in Tiverton, and drove all around that area, over Dartmoor, etc etc .......................

well, he was teaching Botany, and also coaching some athletics and some rugby :-)

I stopped by the pharmacy yesterday evening ..........

............ we can have vaccination for shingles here, and I've had a prescription for it sitting in there for about 5 months

the pharmacists can now do vaccinations ................... but I wanted to know how I went about making arrangements to have it done.

Very easy ....................

but then the pharmacy assistant added ..........

"make sure you are not ill when you come for it. It is a live vaccine, so you have to be healthy or you van be in trouble. And, you can't have any other vaccinations for 4 weeks afterwards."

so I guess, I have to keep my fingers crossed that I don't catch a cold before or just after I make the appointment :-0

You can stay as long as you like Sue as it is the end of our tour. It was all Sylvia's doing ads she posted the list in the first place

My knee was playing up by the end of the week. I hurt it while we were swimming ax well.
It locked out while I was going down some steps in the museum and I almost fell down. Luckily, I Was only four steps from the bottom, so I managed to stumble down them and kept upright. I threw my handbag down the steps and pushed Eve off the bottom one, but she was fine.

I go to see the specialist on Thursday
