SueMaid Report 21 Feb 2015 22:54

Very harsh Linda :-(

The neighbors wouldn't think anything about it - it's a strange street :-D

OH is off to the markets with instructions he will ignore :-D

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 21 Feb 2015 22:50

That's rather unfeeling of you Linda :-0

You could always have one of the chemical isolation suits with a visor,

but would probably scare the neighbours

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 21 Feb 2015 22:42

No way, I don't want to catch it

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 21 Feb 2015 22:40

I think you'd better get out there Linda with your nurses hat on, to nurse them back to health.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 21 Feb 2015 22:36

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 21 Feb 2015 22:32

Oh dear Sue,

I hope that your OH doesn't get whatever it is. Someone has to hold the fort, and take care of you two.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 21 Feb 2015 22:29

Enjoy your coffee, Sylvia <3

My son is now feeling poorly :-(

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 21 Feb 2015 22:29

I don't think we do have the European cockchafer here - I'm sure I would have heard of it if it is that destructive.

Enjoy our coffee Sylvia

it's coffee time :-D

enjoy the rest of your day, Sue

I hope you feel better.

Tec and Linda ........ sleep tight.

Linda ....... thank you for arranging the tour of the pubs :-D

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Feb 2015 22:24

Tec .......

the European cockshafer larvae eat the roots of the grass ................... you can pull the grass up by handfuls.

The crows grab a beakful of grass, and toss it over their shoulders :-)

some people get down on their hands and knees, pull up the grass and pick out the grubs by hand. They they re-sod or re-seed

but the adults just lay more eggs.

People put down netting to keep the birds and animals away, so they don't get these torn up lawns .............. but that leaves the larvae free to develop, and the adults can lay eggs through the holes in the netting.

so, OH pointed out, the infestation just gets worse for them, except they don't have the animals doing it!

The grass will die anyway, as there are no roots left.

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Feb 2015 22:20

Sue ..........

it is a dreadful problem ......................and there is nothing that can be done. The only "treatment" is spraying the lawns with a solution of nematodes ................. which has to be done at a certain time of year, and when the cockshafer larvae are a t a certain stage.

and even then it only works about 25% of the time.

all the heavy insecticides have been taken off the market.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 21 Feb 2015 22:18

I don't know if we have the European cockchafer here.

We do have vine weevil that is a real pest, imported from Holland a few years ago in pot plants. I've had pots infested with the grubs that eat the roots and kill the plant.

I've enjoyed the tour as well, it's been very interesting. Linda has done a good job. :-)

Would you like some grapes peeled for you Sue? I have some nice green ones on the coffee table

The shingles vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of 60, but we can have it any time after the age of 50, no restrictions apart from needing a prescription.

It is considered a one-time only shot for us

It does only reduce the chance of getting shingles by 50%, but they reckon that it will be a lighter, less painful event if you do get it .............. especially the pain that lingers afterwards.

I've had chicken pox, like most of us, so I'm in the "danger group"

OH had it done back in November or December 2013.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 21 Feb 2015 22:14

That sounds like a dreadful problem Sylvia. I must read up about it.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 21 Feb 2015 22:12

You can't get the shingles vaccination here - yet. Nearly time for our flu jabs. That means winter is coming. Our days are getting just a little shorter :-(

I've enjoyed our tour :-)
