Tec ..........

:-D :-D

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Feb 2015 22:05

Tec ............... you're making a lot of sense :-)

I did persuade OH some years ago to pay someone to mow the grass .................. he finally very reluctantly agreed.

It wasn't that it was getting beyond him, but it was taking so much time that he wasn't doing the gardening that he loves!

We're a corner lot, and we have to take care of the city's grass on the boulevards between the sidewalk and he road.

Inside the garden, there are only 2 lots of grass, one front and one back. One varies from about 5' to 7' wide by 4' to 8' deep. The other is about 7' by 10'

BUT .............. we have 2 strips of grass between our fence and the sidewalk, one about 2-3' x 30' and one about 2-3' by 120'.

Then 2 strips of city boulevard, one about 3-4' x 33' and one about 3-4' x 120'. Both those strips have trees planted in them that have to be maneovred (?sp) around.

Our current lawn maintenance guy is called .................... Attila :-)

Sylvia - when Concorde was flying, we were in the direct flight path to America.

We often heard the sonic boom as it reached the coast :-D

must have been putting his foot on the gas :-D

Linda ................

I'm the one saying we need to get someone in to do the painting ................ especially in this room.

The ceiling rise to a peak from one side to the other.

It's about 9' high at its lowest point, but about 18' at its highest ....................so one whole wall is 18' high, 2 others change from about 9' to 18. Then there's the ceiling with its' skylight

I think getting a painter with with all the proper equipment makes a lot of sense now

HE says he can still do it :-(

Tecwyn Report 24 Feb 2015 21:58

I think half the battle is recognising that you do need help.

It's a bitter pill to swallow when you've always done things for yourself.

Maybe it's pride, maybe you think no one will do the job as well as you would.

Now, in my circumstances it would be silly not to get help, but I'll still do what I can

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Feb 2015 21:54

Tec .

it was scary!!

We are used to aircraft noise here .................... the airport is less than a mile away as the crow flies, so we soemtimes hear a lot of the planes taking off and landing IF the wind is in the wrong direction ....................

but that one sounded as if it was literally only about 50' above us!

there was also a sort of screaming noise to it!

I'm most certainly glad that you did not hear yours hit the mountain :-)

LindainHerriotCountry Report 24 Feb 2015 21:52

I am glad your plumbing is all sorted Sylvia :-D

O H keeps threatening to get someone in to do jobs like the painting, but then he does it himself. He is like you Tec, but there will come a time when he needs help as well.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 24 Feb 2015 21:50

That would have been scary Sylvia.

We are used to military aircraft noise here. The RAF use this area frequently to train the Typhoon's in low level flying. They are so noisy, and split the air.

That plane tonight was obviously a four prop job, probably a Hercules, but I 've never hear them in the dark.
I was almost waiting for the bang if it hit the mountain.

Thank God it didn't

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 24 Feb 2015 21:45

Glad that your plumber is sorting you out Sylvia.

You must tempt "Harry" back from the Island - pay the ferry :-D for him

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Feb 2015 21:45

Tec .......

thise aircraft can shke the living daylights out of you!!

I remember sitting in our old coffee shop some time after 9/11 when everything started to shake and there was this incredible noise

It was an F18 fighter plane escorting a Korean passenger plane into the Airport .................... the pilot hadn't responded to calls and 2 F18s had escorted him from near Alaska down to here

It sounded as if the fighter was flying directly south right over our heads

Buy a mobility scooter Linda - you said you wanted one :-D

A handyman is invaluable to me now.

I have always done everything for myself, except electricals, that I won't touch.

I still like to tackle what I can, but obviously there are limits that I've had to accept.
Even something simple like changing a light bulb.

Now I do need help, so must pay for it, and that's fine

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Feb 2015 21:40

Linda ..............

OH could do a lot of things, even those he's never been taught ............ but refuses to touch electrical :-)

but he will be 77 this year ................. and has a "tricky" knee, that caused problems last week when he had to get down and under the bathroom sink to disconnect the plunger so he could clean it. Especially as that bit is getting very worn

That's what the plumber has replaced

I did think about getting completely new taps, so we could get away from having the plunger, and just having a rubber stopper for the drain.

OH prefers the plunger :-(

he did try doing something on the car some years ago to do with connecting the trailer lights to the car ......................... our mechanic said "you stick with what you can do, we'll do the car" :-D

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Feb 2015 21:34

we haven't yet been able to replace "Harry" :-(

well .........

the plumber has replaced the plunger on one bathroom sink, so that should now work properly

checked the other one, and that doesn't need replacing

said he didn't have the piece for the toilet .............. and told OH "take a photo of it, take the photo down to Home Depot and get them to help find the piece. It's easy enough to replace, don't call me back" :-)

now OH is paying him :-)

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 24 Feb 2015 21:34

Gosh - just had a very heavy aircraft go over the house very low.

it sounded like a Hercules that pass over the mountain quite regularly, but in daylight.

Could feel the vibration in the chair I'm sitting in.

Worried me for a minute because of the mountain, but if he was going out to sea, then that's ok. Phew :-D

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 24 Feb 2015 21:32

I am lucky that OH is very handy and can turn his hand to most things. Luckily he is still fit enough, but there will come a time when he isn't of course

He is going off to my sons at the end of the week to build a fence for him. He was going to do it a couple of weeks ago, but he was ill. I can't go because I have Meals on Wheels to do, so I will be on my own. I wouldn't mind, but he will have the car, so I won't be able to go anywhere

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 24 Feb 2015 21:27

A good reliable all round handyman is worth his weight in gold.

I had one local man, who is rather eccentric, and although doing a good job, when he stopped talking, drove me nearly as mad as him :-D

Now I've found another man who can tackle most things. He is more expensive, but worth it.

I won't let him go.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Feb 2015 21:23

wow! Linda

certainly a tradesman to keep :-)

This guy is with a company that we've used before ..................... and seems good, now that he has arrived :-)

We might even get out for coffee :-D

OH and I were talking the other day that we need to get a "handyman", to do some of those odd jobs that OH can't do 'cos he doesn't know how, or is getting past doing.

We used to have such a guy ............... but he moved to the Island about 5 years ago :-(

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 24 Feb 2015 21:21

Oh yea of little faith :-D

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Feb 2015 21:19

plumber arrived about 10 minute ago :-)

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 24 Feb 2015 21:13

I don't suppose so.

The trouble is now, getting another electrician to complete the work started by another. They just don't want to know.

He has probably gone onto a bigger job, more worthwhile.

I have a comprehensive contract with British Gas. It is expensive, but covers boiler and central heating system, electrics, internal plumbing, and drainage as far as my boundary.

So I am covered for more or less any eventuality.
