There is a chronic shortage of social housing here Persie.

Not helped by the Thatcher governments policy to sell the houses off to their tenants quite cheaply.
So drying up the supply of social housing.
The trouble is there was no major plan to build more social houses to replace them.

Now young couples are unable to find the high deposit required to buy a home, and neither are there any social houses for them.
Many are still living with their parents, while they try to save a deposit.

We have a crowd here called Habitat and people from various industries go and build a house for those that cannot afford one. OH worked on one when he was working for a company here.

Otherwise these people would still be on the waiting list for a State House rental and living in overcrowded conditions in someone's garage etc.

Our rentals are rented out at below the median price for the area. The tenants seem to recognise this fact. We haven't had a tenant move out in ages.

Gosh - the weatherman just said that those of us in North Wales have a chance of seing the Northern Lights tonight - provided we have a clear sky that is.
It was beautifully clear all day.

Then on Friday we have the eclipse :-D

I think the ones I knew were demolished in the 1970s.

I have just googled and those prefabs have been demolished, I cant remember when I last saw them

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 17 Mar 2015 22:33

People did like them. They were basic, but adequate, easy to heat and keep warm

I'm sure that those struggling to find somewhere to live today would be pleased to be offered one - updated of course.

The ones I knew each had their own little area of garden.

You are most welcome Linda.. thought Eve might like to see it.

Awww Persie, that was lovely thank you

I had some friends who lived in the prefabs, they were nice little houses and people liked them

Sue is missing, but I think she has the children this week.

Tecwyn Report 17 Mar 2015 22:27

Yes they probably did Linda - but they could be re-designed without using asbestos.

I was forbidden to go to the Pre-Fab estate, as the families were considered by my mother to be "not very nice" :-D

I still went there - they were just people.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 17 Mar 2015 22:24

They probably had lots of asbestos in them

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 17 Mar 2015 22:21

Incredible that people are still living in them.

There was an area of Pre-Fabs near to where I lived as a boy. they housed those bombed out during the war.
I went into one or two where school friends lived.
They were quite cosy inside, a bit like the Tardis. Far bigger once inside than they appear to be.

They would make ideal emergency housing in a crisis, even now.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 17 Mar 2015 22:13

There are still some of those prefabs in a town near here Tec

Persephone

Persephone Report 17 Mar 2015 22:11

We had them, my mother's next door neighbours lived in one this was in the early fifties and when I was at high school in 1960 one of my classmates lived in one.. It was called a transit camp. It was a sort of in between place to live and it was a great place to visit as there were all these other children to play with.

Another thing they could use is old railway carriages.. they don't have to have new build.. better to recycle and they could paint them all colours like they do with the jeeps that go around Manila.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 17 Mar 2015 22:06

I wonder what happened to the production of Pre-Fabs, that appeared everywhere after the war to house people.
So simple in construction, and erected in a day.
Some were still lived in thirty years after.
