Hello everyone:))

Isn't Allan going to be annoyed when he realises he's no longer the 1000th poster lol. I don't know how that happened. I had a look at the deletions and they are the ones that appear to have been deleted by GR when Robin showed his nasty side.

An early start for us today with the sausage sizzle starting at 9am. It's incredible how much money you can make bbqing a few sausages and onion. Of course it's the smell of the onion that draw people. If it's a nice day all the better. Saturday is actually a better day because families come to the hardware store after sport and there are workers who come in for equipment. I've seen young fellows put away 2 or 3 sausage sandwiches at an amazing rate:))

Hi Janet, no need to sulk as it would appear that neither of us would have been the 1000th

* thinks...I may delete a few of my earlier posts and then rush back on here!*

The talk of terraced houses made me think of Manchester and although we had an inside loo the backyard had the coal shed and also contained the mangle. I also remember my mum donkeystoning the front door step.

A bit better the my OH's early days where one outside loo was shared by several families! But of course she's from the wilds of Lancashire...Middleton to be precise lol

It's so strange looking back to days past. I recently wrote a history of my early life, and a friend who is much younger than me did the proof reading.She was absolutely amazed at the social history, and later questioned me at length about it the social condiditions of the time.

I am so glad times have changed.

I had a similar chat on another thread with Susan with numbers about social history.

I becme interested in High School when we started to study social and economic history. This was further strengthened when I was at College studying for my Public Health Inspector's Diploma.

We had to read works like Engel's The Condition of the Working Classes in England to give us some comprehension of how poor housing conditons affected people's health.

I've also read most of George Orwell's books. His "The Road to Wigan Pier" and "Down and Out in Paris and London also give a good insight into the conditions prevailing at the time.

I have heard "The Road To Wigan Pier" mentioned several times recently in conversation - I must get a copy - sounds interesting.

I think I mentioned on here recently that I had just finished reading
"Nab End And Beyond" by William Woodruff.
Briefly about his life beginning in the Lancashire town of Blackburn, and the poverty - he later from extremely humble circumstances to become a university lecturer in America - fascinating read.

Hi Janet,

A donkey stone was a block of soft white stone which you rubbed over the the step and it left them lookin white.

It was usually applied from both edges of the step for about a third of the way in. The centre third was left for people to walk on

Shaping up nicely at the moment. Let's see if we get our promised 29 to-day. That's a high summer temp - not winter! However, we have heard crows flying about this morning - that usually means rain.

Tec, I'm sure that you could tell quite a lot of different types of stories. I only did one trip over and back and I could tell a few. The trips alone were an education!
