Allan, Sue Maid and othe New Australians: I can see you need lessons in Oz history. Just as well you got in before Mr Howard's citizenship test.
Abel Tasman 1642 discovered VDL (now Tasmania). Van Diemen was governor of Batavia at the time.
WA was "discovered" 1616 by Hartog at Shark Bay and I knew about the Batavia. Even an Englishman got into the act in that century. William Dampier explored 1688 and 1699. He was not impressed.
Article was in Column 8 of Saturday's Sydney broadsheet. The museum was in Budapest and the artist a Hungarian who lived 1660-1724. The contributor had lived in WA and said he saw no sulphur crested cockatoos. I think he must be wrong that there were none there. I have lived all my life in NSW and have never recognised a lyre-bird, and bower birds only when someone showed them to me.
PS the Australian crow is actually a raven. But the difference is only a matter of a pinion.

Re Last of the Summer Wine. We did get that here but I didn't watch it. Among Oz exports, Neighbours wasn't all shot in "Ramsay Street" Melbourne but you can get guided tours there. Home and Away at "Summer Bay" -- the outside scenes were shot at Sydney's Palm Beach. A beautiful and rather ritzy spot.
I don't know what other Oz soaps got to the UK. Hopefully, not too many. There are some good series on our ABC, though.

G'day all Aussies and Brits :))

Sorry Ive not posted for a few days, Ive been busy with the family tree and catching up with family. I had my nephews 21st Birthday on Friday(last), It was a great night.
I come from a large family, four sisters and five brothers, so when there is an occasion its usually fairly large!!!!

Ive just discovered my gr gr grand father and I'm pretty sure its the right one. But just to be certain, could someone please tell me how to go about obtaining the marriage/birth certificates from here in Australia? Ive been offered by a family member to get the certs for me, but Id rather do it myself:)) They lived in Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire. Ta:)))

Now I'm off to pickup my two teenagers one from horse riding and a the other from a mates place.

I'm still groaning from Alison's comment - yes! Allan's jokes are catching!

I envy you your big family. My mum was the second of ten children (4 girls, then 4 boys and twin girls to finish off). The twins are only a few years older than I am, so I more or less grew up with the big family. There was always something going on - never a dull moment.

The Government Records Office is the place to get your certificates. If you can quote the reference number/page number, it should only be seven pounds sterling - but if you email them, giving all the relevent details - Name,Date,Place,Parents's names and reference numbers; details of your credit card, etc., they will mail it to you.

I sent for one and had a phone call saying my card 'wouldn't go through'. When I said I knew of no reason why it shouldn't, the lass said she would try it again. Seconds later, she said "oops it went through OK then -sorry to bother you". The phone call probably cost more than the certificate did!

I have the reference numbers and all the other details so I just need to know who to contact.

A lovely day out with mum trawling around markets. We didn't buy a lot but the atmosphere at these country markets is great. What we did buy was some tomato and chilli sauce and macadamia and paw paw chutney which the lady at the stall assured us goes very well with ham and with cheese. We also bought mum some home-made chocolates because she won't buy them for herself:)

I'm missing the grandchildren - isn't that silly? Apparently they had a wonderful time at Dreamworld and loved Wiggles World as I knew they would. Can't wait to see the photos.

PS Thanks for the history lesson, Colin. It's prompted me to go to the library tomorrow and get a book on Australian history. My knowledge is sadly lacking when you think I went to school here.

if you go to GRO.GOV.UK (or Google it and go from there), there are details on how to order certificates online, and also, if you scroll down, the address is there for ordering by mail.

I think you might have to use a credit card if you order online, so perhaps you will need to email them first and get the price (some say seven pounds if you have the reference numbers; ten pounds if not), plus postage but they will answer your email within 5 days and advise you. Perhaps you can send an International money order. That's how I ordered one years ago, before they accepted credit cards.

Cat has been on quite a few threads overnight. She mentioned she was on her fifth Southern Comfort on one of them - and still kept going for another hour or so after that!

I don't think she will enjoy her saucer of milk when she wakes this morning.

Have been looking at holiday destinations for the xmas holidays, with xmas not that far away now have to start looking as they get booked fairly early...Looking at Denmark for a few days have has anyone been there?

I don't have a credit card as such, but ended up getting a Visa Debit card, specifically for ordering certificates and other family history stuff. I only keep a couple of hundred bucks in the account and top up when I know I'm going to order something.

Berona and Allison thanks for the advice, Just after I posted I went into Cheshire and Lancashire BMD. It seems that I can order them there through the post with a money order (7 pounds sterling).
I reckon I will go to the bank and organize a debit card and do it that way in the future. Thank-you again:))
