Good Morning Allan,
I thought you would be able to see me as Great Uncle Bulgaria, especially in Berona's nightcap. I also have the little round hat with the tassle on that he wore, but no smoking jacket I'm afraid.
Yes, you can help with the recycling, but Wimbledon Common is a long way from here - can't we just do it on my beach?

I think we met the other week, Tec :-)

Yes, Sue, thank you, I truly did "tread in my ancestors' footsteps" :-)

Joy.......I'm sorry if we've met before - as the others on here will testify, I am slowly losing it, please forgive me.

Sounds like you had a good trip,

Tec.

Berona Report 22 Sep 2009 22:58

Hello all. What a sight to wake up to! I could see a red glow under my blinds and thought a car was stopped outside my window - awfully close! It was just like the glow from a tail-light. Further investigation proved that the red glow was everywhere!

I have aeen a red glow in the sky before when buhfires were not many miles away, but these have been accompanied by the smell of fire too. To-day's red glow is the strangest I have seen - caused by a dust storm. I can't smell any dust, but after that small amount of rain we had last night, I don't doubt that there will be some 'cleaning up' necessary. The dust storm was enough to close the airport and stop ferry services, so I suppose that means we will have some traffic chaos for a while.

Tecwyn Report 22 Sep 2009 23:03

Good Morning Berona,
Sounds like the dust storm is pretty wide spread. Hope you're not planning to go for a drive today.
Is you car garaged, or will it too be covered in dust.

The Beach it is then Tec

One bit of good news. I have finally received a reply to an email which I sent to Fort Henry in Toronto (well I actually sent it to the curator) and he is extremely interested in the sketches.

I had better explain; I have three sketch pads which I believe may have been my elusive grandfather Mortimer's.

One of these has sketches done in Scotland, Ireland and Canada in the late1840's, and whilst these would not have been done by my grandfather as he was not born until about 1860 they may have been his father's or an uncle.

Given the location of the sketches I wondered if there was a military connection. On another thread, JaneyCanuk suggested that I contactFort Henry and give the details.

I now have a list of all the Regiments andCompanies thet served ther during the relevant period.

I'll now do some research to see if any of those regiments were also in Scotland and Ireland at the respective dates given on the Sketches

Allan,
That really is exciting, and hopefully could be the key to many brick walls.
If the Regiment served in those locations, and if your Gt Grandfather was in that Regiment, you could possibly get all sorts of information in the right quarter. Good luck with that Allan - I hope it opens some doors.

The new contact I have has given me lots of information re my Welsh ancestors. I had names and dates, but now have lots of details that is of great interest to me.

Good Morning everyone (well, here it's morning!)

Sorry Carolee, I missed you earlier and hello to Joy.

I've been watching the Today show and the coverage of the dust blanketing Sydney and other areas. It's quite eerie - kindly send it to the sea, not up north to Qld. We are expecting 35 degrees today *moans and groans*.

Allan, I hope you get some good info about those sketches.

I remember the Wombles, watched it as a kid - wasn't my favourite show. I do remember Ethel Merman - I think she was on Sesame Street once!

Drive carefully SueMaid or as they are advising, take a train today.

Howdy to the whole gang. I've got the jumps happening again, so I shall go and do some re-arranging in my very small house for a new desk I've purchased. I think I shall have to be brutal and cull a lot of *stuff.* Sigh

Have a good one, our lot and I hope the Brits are having a lovely snooze.

PS Carolee - I really enjoy Spagh Bol too. Mmmmmm. *salivates on keyboard.*

Allan,
I hope that site proves useful to you. You never know who reads the posts,
I waited 3 months for a positive response, but well worth waiting for.

I have decided to join Ancestry in a few weeks, when the dark nights arrive, and I can spend more time researching.

When you said about when you were in the Goldfields - were you out there with a shovel and a pan, prospecting? I have to ask........

Good Morning Alison,

Alison, Out of curiosity, where is your nearest big city?
just wondered,
Is it Brisbane?

Tec

Alison

Alison Report 22 Sep 2009 23:48

Yes, Tec, Brisbane pretty much. It's where we get sent to for medical treatment that we can't get here, like radiation. It's a lonnnnnng way.

Allan Report 22 Sep 2009 23:51

Oh Allison you have definitely got all the males on this thread summed up!

Tec, mainly working for local government. I was based in Leonora and looked after four Shires. I once totalled up the area I covered and it came to something like a third of the State.

As a lot of travelling was involved I did buy a metal detector...I found a belt buckle and an old penny!!

I still have my Miner's Right which I purchased back in 1982..I don'k no whether they are still issued but back then you needed one to do any form of prospecting

Sue - That's very exciting that you do your interview to-day. Hope it all goes well for you. Don't let your nerves get the better of you. I suppose that's easy for me to say - I'm not the one doing the interview!
Is it going out direct, or being recorded? I wish we could hear it. Is it likely to be broadcast on a Sydney station? Anyway - I'll be thinking of you and have my fingers crossed!

Allan - that's very interesting about the sketchpads. I'd love to have something in my tree like that. I have one gr/gr/grandfather who was a pioneer of his district - but the rest are all names and dates (oh, and plenty of Ag.Labs, too).

Tec, my car is garaged, thankfully, because when it gets dirty, it stays dirty until one of my sons washes it for me.

Colin - please reconsider leaving us. You are the only one I can talk to regarding historical Sydney and strata living. Also, as Tec says, it would cause a serious gender imbalance. (I like that description).

You did have a big area.

Well, of course you guys are gentlemen!

Tec, Brissy won't be as hot as where I am today, but I think they're still expecting 31 degrees.

I suppose I had better go and tackle this room - before it gets too hot.

Cheerio young chaps!

Berona,
I'm inbalanced - or is that unbalanced,
can't speak for Allan, just what gender is a hairy legged maid anyway.
