Wellie throwing is my specialty.
I was a wellie throwing champion for three years in a row. I have the plaque to prove it!

I'll leave you to answer that question. I'm not up with the intelligence quotient of far flung empires.

No not your question Viv. Yes we do have wellie throwing competitions but I don't know if that is in the Compass Cup event.

I know the Tunarama Festival at Port Lincoln used to have tuna throwing contests, but they changed that to throwing boots.

Don't understand why! Smelly wet fish are much more of a challenge.

Oh is that piece of info going to get me into strife. yes it is called Tunarama Festival!!

Hey Viv, They might have don't better trying for Aust. We tended to look pretty favourably on detainees of HMP throughout our history.

Deb Vancouver (18665) Report 6 Jun 2009 23:24

We were in this tiny village somewhere in England enjoying an afternoon drinkypoo (it turned into an all night session, but that is a different story that involves waking up in a cow field the next day).

The landlord after hearing our accent asked where we were from (his first guess was the US). We said we were from Vancouver to which he replied
"Our daughter lives in St. Catherines, she is a zoo keeper there, do you know her?"

Sure we do! Nice girl.............

By the way a ute is a utility vehicle, a Melbas chocolate cow pat is a lump of chocolate shaped like cow manure. And I do not understand whether they throw the chocolate cow pat or thongs.

I'd be very unhappy if they threw the chocolate.

You are soooo lucky girl.
The parents wanted to relocate to canada in 1972,but due to a run in between father and the law that entailed a holiday at HMP a few years before,it was refused.
GOD ,just think ,,,we may have ended up as neighbours with a bit of bad luck..

Dont know about cow jockey silks, its not known here,,but my silks were navy and orange,,yummmmie colours

AuntySherlock

AuntySherlock Report 6 Jun 2009 23:20

not certain about the silks. Apart from the cow race here are the senior events. You will notice the thought and ingenuity that has gone into the program. Only in Australia...........

SPONGE AND GRUNT
Teams of 2. One person pushes the wheelbarrow (known as the grunt) and one is in the wheelbarrow (known as the sponge). The sponge has a bucket of milk and the grunt pushes the load around an obstacle course. Teams are judged on the amount of milk that is left in the bucket at the end of the course. Seniors only.

DAWN DASH
Teams of 2 needs to crawl out of their swag, down iced coffees, race to the ute and load up various items onto the back before honking the horn to signify that they have finished all the tasks. Tasks can vary and will be explained before the race. Seniors only!

WOBBLY COW RACE
3 in a team. Someone rides the cow which is a drum on uneven wheels painted like a cow. The rider must stay on and first over the line wins. The other two members are there to assist the rider to stay on the cow! Seniors only

DUNG FLING
Test your Aussieness and see how far you can throw a Melbas Chocolate Cow Pat. It may sound easy but thongs are more difficult to throw than you think. Junior event.

MILK LOADING
Pairs are asked to cart milk (coloured water) from a tank to a drum which is located on the back of a ute head height, the team with the most milk in their drum wins. The participants are not allowed to climb on to the ute. Junior and senior events.

TRACTOR PULL
The tug of war teams will be matched against a tractor. The tractor will need to be towed a certain distance in the best time to determine the winner. Junior and senior events!

RUBBER BOOT MARATHON
Individual race. Heap of rubber boots in a tank of water, so firstly you have to get a pair that fits you and put them on. Then the marathon is an obstacle course, roll a bale of hay, load a bale onto a ute, go through whatever is set up on the day and lastly it always ends with the slippery wet slide through the plastic tunnel. Best time wins. Junior and senior events.

FLEURIEU MILK SKULL OFF
Put on your thongs, race to station 1 & see how quickly you can swig milk from the Fleurieu Milk Company. At station 2 skull some more milk & drink the most milk the quickest to be crowned the champ!!!!

ENGINE BLOW UP
See if you can guess how long the Motor will last without oil or water, will it even start? Your chance to participate without moving from your seat... Squares with times will be sold throughout the day, and the winner announced once the event is completed.

Viv, you've missed your calling. (Other than being a professional heckler, and I see you're working on that!)

From Aunty's link:

"The idea of the Cow Race came into being early one morning on a stud property just outside Mt Compass. Bet, the house cow, a 12-year-old Guernsey, was down the farm end of the paddock. On being called in for milking Bet headed full stretch for the milk shed. This action fired the imagination of a Rural Youth Adviser; and so the seed of the first Compass Cup was sown."

Cow racing! If only one of your ancestors had managed to get transported, you might be wearing the silks now. I dunno, do cow jockeys wear silks?

I agree with the time zone dilemma. I have two windows of opportunity in which to harass and annoy them, one very late at night and the other first thing in the morning.

They are good sports about it. Usually leave uncomplimentary digs or lukewarm fuzzies while my side of the planet is sleeping.

Incidentally. Just received an email from The Genealogist politely informing me that my subscription had expired.

Trouble is I don't ever recollect having a subscription or membershp with them. Do you think I should ask for a refund. Never used the last "subscription."

Nope, no idea who the person is.

Oh look here's a thread one third of the world away.

They've all gone to bed. I wonder if they've ever heard of the Compass Cup, Mt Compass.

That'll set their little bovine loving hearts all a flutter.

When us Aussies go cow riding we do it seeeeriously.

Hope they are able to manage the language differentials.

And hope I don't zap this little thread. Must go cautiously.

Well, Deb, if you don't know ...

Reminding me of meeting someone when you're travelling. You tell them you're from, oh, Toronto. They say, my spouse has a cousin in Vancouver! Maybe you know him, Joe Blow? Works at a Tim Horton's?

And the ever-polite Canadian says Why yes! Of course! Joe Blow! Charming fellow. ;)

Maybe you gave Glenys directions and didn't even know it!
